BISHOPS’ STATEMENT ON THE LEGALIZATION OF
MARIJUANA
Excerpt from A Statement of the Roman Catholic Bishops of
Massachusetts on the Legalization of Recreational Marijuana
(for full text, visit http://macatholic.org/votenoon4)
Marijuana represents a significant part of substance use in
America and adversely affects the health of millions of Americans. According to a recent report issued by the National Institute of Drug Abuse, Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States. Its widespread use and abuse, particularly by young people under the age of eighteen, is steadily
increasing while scientific evidence clearly links its long term
damaging effects on brain development. “When marijuana users
begin using as teenagers, the drug may reduce thinking,
memory and learning functions and affect how the brain builds
connections between the areas necessary for these functions.
Marijuana’s effects on these abilities may last a long time or
even be permanent.”
The Roman Catholic Bishops of Massachusetts join Governor
Baker and many other elected officials along with the American
Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American College of Pediatricians (ACP) in opposing the legalization of marijuana. We
urge the voters of Massachusetts to vote NO on Question 4 on
November 8, 2016.
VOTE NO ON QUESTION 4 ON NOVEMBER 8, 2016

WSB to vote for the Saint Mary’s A fter School Program. Last
year we received $2,243 to support our program. You can vote
online or by dropping a paper ballot in the box at a local branch
the next time you stop in the bank. Thanks for your
consideration.
WELCOME BACK CLASS OF 1966
This Sunday we welcome Saint Mary’s High School Class of
1966 back to the parish. They are having a dinner on Saturday
evening and some of the class members are returning to give
thanks to God at the 10:00 a.m. Mass for their education and
class friendships. The Mass will be offered by Fr. Paul
Robichaud who is a member of the Class of 1966.
THANK YOU MARTIN
Many thanks to Martin Rooney of St. Charles who arranged for
the Brass Quintet to play at the 10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Mary’s
last week. Many worshippers said they loved the experience and
were grateful to be there that day.

HOLY LOVE MINISTRIES-CONCERNS
A parishioner recently asked me about Holy Ministries from
Ohio. Upon inquiry, I learned that the Bishop of Cleveland,
which is the diocese where this organization is based, has
determined that the apparition claim is false and there is no
reason to believe that the Blessed Mother has appeared there. He
has instructed that no priest or member of the faithful should
support or follow this ministry. In other words, this organization
is not Catholic. The Bishops are entrusted by Jesus to safeguard
the Faith and protect God’s people, so the Bishop made this
determination after careful and humble investigation. He did this
to protect the faithful from being misled. I ask that people who
are following this ministry, or promoting it, to cease from doing
this especially at the parish. If anyone has any questions about
this decision, I encourage them to speak with me or one of the
other priests in the parish. I also encourage all who were
following this group to continue praying to the Blessed Mother
for her intercessions to help bring an end to all evil and send
peace and justice to our nation and world.

SAINT MARY PARISH
My brothers and sisters in Christ,
Welcome back Fr. David. Many parishioners have asked me
how Fr. David is doing in his new assignment. This weekend you
might have the chance to ask him yourself. Fr. David is here this
weekend for the Catholic Health Initiatives for Uganda (CHIU)
Fundraiser this Saturday evening, October 22. Father will be
around through Sunday but you will definitely be able to see him
and spend time with him at the fundraiser if you attend. There
are still tickets available and they can be bought at the door of
the lower hall of the Church this Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Tickets
are $50. There will be a meal, entertainment and an auction. All
proceeds allow CHIU to buy all the medical supplies, medicine
and send the doctors over to treat people who have no access to
doctors, nurses or any healthcare.
– Father Michael
SEMI ANNUAL APPEAL – THIS WEEKEND
This weekend is our semi-annual appeal. We depend greatly on
your generosity to this fund to make it through the winter with its
high costs for heat and snowplowing. If you have given in the
past to this appeal, we thank you and ask you to give what you
can this year. If you can give more than you gave last year, we
thank you. If you can give the same as you gave last year or
have to give less– we thank you. Please give what you can! If
you are not making a donation this weekend, you can have it sent
into the rectory office or drop an envelope in the collection any
coming Sunday. Thanks in advance for your consideration.
CHURCH IN HAITI
Numerous people have inquired about the status of the Church in
Haiti. We have not received first hand reports so we cannot say if
the hurricane impacted the rebuilding of the Church. A pastor of
a parish in Indiana that also supports that Church in Bainet
received word form the pastor that the homes of all the people
were destroyed. I cannot confirm this but let us pray that it is not
correct. We will let you know when we receive more
information. Let us also pray for the people in our own country
and elsewhere who are still trying to rebuild and start over after
the massive storm. May they persevere! St. Matthew pray for
them!
ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT
Last Sunday, we printed the annual financial report of the parish
in the bulletin. The report shows that we had income of $882,774
and expenses and charitable giving of $872,900 leaving a
positive balance of 9,874. Thank you for making this possible.
Our financial goals remain the same: 1. Pay all our bills. 2.
Maintain and improve our physical plant. 3. Invest in education
and charity.
COAT DRIVE THROUGH THE END OF OCTOBER
Please donate your extra winter coats for those in need. Leave
them in the back of the church and members of the St. Vincent
de Paul Society will pick them up and distribute them before
winter sets in. Warm thanks for your generosity.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
In this Sunday’s Gospel, the tax collector’s prayer allows God to
be God and so allows God to pour mercy into his heart. When
we pray and give alms to the poor, we allow God’s mercy to be
poured into their hearts.
Through your gift to St. Mary’s Vincent de Paul Society you also
can give God’s mercy to your neighbor who is hungry, hopeless,
alone and frightened.
For the grace to love those who are despised and rejected, Lord,
hear our prayer. For the grace to serve those who need our
compassion and mercy, Lord, hear our prayer. For the grace of
humility and honesty, Lord, hear our prayer. Amen

FINANCIAL REPORT
Next weekend, we will publish the financial report of fiscal year
2016 in the bulletin.
THE SIGN OF JONAH
Last week, 26 of us from the Sunday morning catechesis went on
a whale watch. We embarked from Gloucester and travelled
across Massachusetts Bay for two hours until we came upon
humpback and Minke whales feeding themselves. We went to
show the children what a boat ride was like and what a whale
looks like. Most had never been on a boat. None of them had
ever seen a whale. We saw them dive, play around in the water,
breach and jump as they fed on fish. This is their feeding time.
Soon they will travel south to the warmer waters where they will
fast until they return to this area next year. Even whales fast!
While on board we read the book of Jonah. It was a great day
and was very helpful for them to learn through Jonah that God is
merciful.

ORACIÓN DE SAN FRANCISCO DE ASIS
Señor,
hazme un instrumento de tu paz:
allí donde haya odio, que yo ponga el
amor,
allí donde haya ofensa, que yo ponga el
perdón;
allí donde haya discordia, que yo ponga la
unión;
allí donde haya error, que yo ponga la
verdad;
allí donde haya duda, que yo ponga la fe;
allí donde haya desesperación, que yo
ponga la esperanza;
allí donde haya tinieblas, que yo ponga la
luz;
