Each year, the City of Newark recognizes individuals and
groups who have made significant contributions to our
community through their volunteer activities. The awards are
separated into four categories: Group, Senior, Youth, and
Volunteer of the Year. This year, St. Edward was honored to
have two of our parishioners nominated in the Senior and the
Volunteer of the Year categories. Pictured here with Fr. Jay,
are Russ Sell, recipient of the Senior award, and John Becker,
nominee for Volunteer of the Year. Both of these men are
also active in so many parish activities, it is almost too much
to name! When you see them at Mass (Russ at 7:15 am and
John at 6:00pm) please be sure to congratulate and thank
them! God bless you both, Russ and John.

Respect Life Quote
“When a patient says I don’t want to be a burden, it may
really be a question, Am I a burden? …when a patient
says I might as well be dead, he may really be saying no
one cares about me. Many studies show that assisted
suicide requests are almost always for such psychological
or social reasons.” - “Life Matters: Doctor-Assisted Death”

Treasures From Our Tradition
Unless Professor Einstein’s theory of relativity can be
translated into any useful kind of time-travel, most of our
clues about life in the early church will have to come from
ancient letters and ancient prayer texts. A prayer text
from a dusty library may yield, for example, an understanding of what “presbyters” actually did. We have such
a prayer from the early third century from the hand of Hippolytus of Rome. While our modern prayers derive a
great deal from his, some of the practices of the ancient
church have fallen away. In his day, bishops were chosen
by the people, and the other bishops merely consented.
Presbyters, by contrast, seem to have been chosen by
the bishops. This makes sense, since it allowed the bishops to hand-pick their most trusted advisers.
It seems that bishops were at first reluctant to share
their presiding at the Eucharist with presbyters. In fact, by
the time of the fourth-century church’s growth spurt in
Rome, the bishop sent deacons out with fragments of the
host from his Eucharist to drop into the chalices of the
presbyters at the outlying Eucharistic celebrations. We still have a vestige of this fermentum in the Mass today, a reminder of
the early bishops’ desire to give a powerful
sign of the unity of all celebrations of the
Eucharist with their ministry, and a clue to
their reluctance to delegate a sacramental
ministry to the presbyters.

Quo Vadis Camp
July 10-13, 2016
Diocese of Oakland Youth Retreat Center
1977 Reliez Valley Road, Lafayette 94549
Registration Fee: $50
Young men ages 13-18 are invited. This three-day camp
aims to assist young men in discerning their vocation as
they grow in relationship with Christ. Activities will include
fun, games, music, mass, prayer and talks.
Please contact Fr. Neal Clemens at
[email protected] for more information.
GOD IS CALLING YOU!
A vocation – marriage, priesthood, religious life, etc. - is a
call to love and every baptized person has one!
But perhaps you’re feeling a tug to give your heart to
Jesus exclusively, sitting at His feet like Mary Magdalene,
or perhaps you’ve wondered what life is like as a
cloistered nun? If you’re a single, Catholic woman
between the ages of 18-40 years, we invite you to spend
a day of discernment on July 16th with the Dominican
Contemplative Nuns of Corpus Christi Monastery in
Menlo Park, CA. Catch a glimpse of the same hidden life
of love that has been lived at the heart of the
Church and the Dominican Order since
St. Dominic founded the first community of
Dominican nuns in 1206. For more information
or to reserve your spot, contact Sister Joseph
Marie, O.P., at [email protected], or
visit our website at www.nunsmenlo.org/
vocation-discernment-event. Space is limited
and fills fast!
New and Old Parishioners
It is important to be registered in your parish to complete
your Sacraments, or to be sponsors or Godparents in
our church and other churches. Call the office to find out
if you are still registered, because during October last
year we up-dated our Census and we inactivated 4,000
families who did not check in.
ARE YOU one of those? It is never late, please call us
and we will reactivate your information if you still coming
to Mass at St. Edward.
Jubilee Year of Mercy
Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Half the liturgical year 2016 is completed after six months
of extraordinary celebrations. The Incarnation mystery:
Jesus’ advent, nativity, epiphany. The Paschal mystery:
Jesus’ passion, death, resurrection, Pentecost’s Holy
Spirit. The solemnities of Holy Trinity and Jesus’ Body
and Blood. Today the Church resumes Sundays in
Ordinary Time, but with a Gospel of extraordinary mercy:
Jesus raises a dead man to life. Yet the one who benefits
most from his extraordinary mercy is not the dead son but
his widowed mother. With her husband and only son
deceased, this woman’s material support, in that
patriarchal society, had vanished. So had her emotional
support, leaving her helpless, abandoned, on
society’s “peripheries.” One of Pope Francis’ hopes in
calling this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is to
transform us into more extraordinary Christians, by
making our caring outreach to just such vulnerable
people, and our practical self-sacrificing love for them, our
ordinary, daily, Christian way of life!

PEACEMAKING: MUSLIMS AND
CATHOLICS IN DIALOGUE
An Evening of Interfaith Fellowship
Pope Francis has declared this year to be the Year of
Mercy. Since fellowship is one of the greatest expressions
of God’s mercy, we are inviting you to join us in an
evening with our Muslim sisters and brothers to share
faith and food. We will begin the program learning about
Catholic and Muslim peacekeeping traditions followed by
group discussions and ending with an action plan for what
each of us can do in our communities to promote peace.
The evening will end with a delicious dinner not served
until sunset in respect for the Muslims' observance of
Ramadan.
This event will be held on Saturday, June 18 from 5:00 9:00 p.m. in Stack Hall at Our Lady of Grace Church,
3433 Somerset Ave., Castro Valley. (Wheelchair
accessible and ample parking) Sponsored by Pax Christi/
Northern California and Maryknoll Affiliates of the East
Bay. There will be a free will collection to offset the cost
of the food.
Please RSVP to Kris East at [email protected] or
(510) 276-6021.
