Reflection of the Week “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.” Many of us may recall that proclamation from St. John the Baptist. It certainly reflects the humility expected from all of us as stewards of the Lord. Nevertheless, there is a deeper meaning in that statement which has both implication and applicability to us and our lives. At that time, the time of John the Baptist and Jesus, one of the basic teachings of Jewish rabbis was that a teacher might demand almost anything of his students and followers with one exception: that was to remove the teacher’s sandals. John tells us he is not worthy to do even that. This Advent season asks us to evaluate how we relate to God, and how prepared we are to serve Christ as His disciple, His steward. Are we worthy? That is the question we need to be asking ourselves. And the truth is that none of us are worthy of the sacrifice and salvation provided us by the Lord. Jesus brings us an immersion in the Holy Spirit which takes us beyond this life and this understanding. Are we ready? It is time to get ready. Saint Pope John Paul II said, “The whole of our life must be an ‘advent,’ a vigilant awaiting of the final coming of Christ.” Copyright©2014www.THECATHOLICSTEWARD.com THE ICON STAND VOTIVE CANDLE is burning this week for Della Harmon THE SANCTUARY LAMP CANDLE is burning this week for Mike Vecchiarelli SYNOD Just a few weeks ago we opened a special website Renosynod2015.org where you can find the latest information about the diocesan synod, including a list of the parish listening serious and the questions on which you may comment. People bring attic treasures to experts for appraisal and possible cash. Catholic attics, or maybe Grandma’s wall, often hold a “sick call crucifix.” It is a curiously bulky crucifix hiding a sliding panel and a secret compartment. Two tiny candles, a squeeze bottle of holy water, a stringy purple mini‑stole, a tube of prayers, and some cotton balls are all hidden inside. The cross folds up to form a mini‑altar that can be propped up by a sick person’s bed. All that is needed is a priest with the oil of the sick and Holy Communion. Forty years ago, when these crosses enjoyed great popularity, the sacrament of the sick was often an encounter between priest and sick person alone, and often only in a last crisis of illness. Gradually, we are reclaiming the sacrament of anointing from this minimal, hidden expression. It is celebrated more richly and more often, even in the Sunday assembly, at every stage of illness and across a wide range of human suffering. The “sick call crucifix” is not a tradition, it is a curiosity from another time, but it reminds us of true tradition: we are a people who care for our sick, who accompany them in faith, and who sustain them with an experience of Christ’s presence. —Rev. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S.
