Page 2 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 10, 2010 In Everything Give Thanks...The leper was healed while “Jesus continued on his journey to Jerusalem.” This is what happens to us when by paschal mystery living we walk with Jesus to Jerusalem: on the way we are healed of our infirmities. We are healed each time we come to Eucharist to give praise and thanks to God, and in this act of worship we become more perfect members of the Body of Christ. We are healed each time we put others ahead of ourselves, and in these simple acts we strengthen our faith. We are healed each time we pause a few seconds to “give thanks to God” for the many blessings of each day because by giving thanks to God we acknowledge that God has acted in Christ. Gratitude is an expression of paschal mystery living because by giving thanks we acknowledge our own indebtedness—we are poor and everything we are and are becoming is because God has raised us up. God gives us so much (salvation) and asks so little of us in return (faith & thankfulness). This is but another reminder that our relationship to God isn’t between equals—God’s gifts are lavish, far more than anything we could earn or accomplish on our own. This is why paschal mystery living makes such good sense. By living Jesus’ dying and rising in our own simple everyday tasks, we render God the greatest and thanks and worship because our lives become like that of the divine Son. Our thanks is our manifestation of God’s salvation. —Living Liturgy 2010 St. Didacus Parish offers Rosaries for Peace During the early years of Pope John Paul II's pontificate, he called on the Catholics of the world to pray more for Peace. In answer to his plea, Fr. Donald Buchanan, then associate Pastor of St. John of the Cross Church in Lemon Grove, eagerly answered the Holy Father's request. This was 1983, and the world was still in danger from international communism. Our Lady had warned at Fatima in 1917 that Russia would continue to spread her errors throughout the world if her requests were not answered: Prayer, especially the Rosary, Sacrifice and return to God … Repentance. This year instead of having a Diocesan led Rosary for Peace each parish will lead its own rosary. St. Didacus Parish will have our Rosary for Peace at the following times. Please join us in the Church for the Rosary: —Saturday, October 16th at 4:30pm —Sunday, October 17th at 8:00am in English and at 12:30pm in Spanish Beginning very humbly, with the help of individuals of the Legion of Mary (he was then serving as Spiritual Director of that organization), the Knights of Columbus and other parish organizations, he organized the first Rosaries for Peace as a Parish devotion in the form of a Candlelight Rosary Procession similar to the ones in which he had participated at Fatima and Lourdes. The response from not only the parishioners at St. John's, but also throughout the Diocese made it necessary to move the following year to the Immaculata and then to the University of San Diego stadium. Through the years, we received Apostolic Blessings from Pope John Paul II, and also received several telegrams from then President Ronald Reagan praising our efforts and saying that he and Mrs. Reagan joined us in prayers for peace. During those years, the Berlin Wall came down and communism lost its power. Unfortunately, not enough people in our world have turned to God, and we are now confronted with international terrorism resulting in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and other trouble spots throughout the world. Our Lady also warned at Fatima that "…war is a punishment for sin." Page 5 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Performing a Paying it Forward good deed for someone makes him or her more likely to do something nice for someone else, say researchers at Harvard and the University of California, San Diego. Their study provides strong evidence that cooperative behavior spreads from person to person to person—like a benevolent virus. In the study, volunteers simulated giving money away to others. The researchers observed a domino effect, in which one person’s kindness spread first to three people, then to nine people, and then to even more people. What’s more, after giving you become a more generous person who’ll give to others more frequently. Happily no one’s immune to the kindness flu. “We found that the effect works on Scrooge and Santa personalities alike,” says study co-author James H. Fowler, Ph.D., a professor at UC San Diego and expert on social networks. This special title can also be given to someone who doesn’t know anything about medicine—but knows a great deal about some other subject. That’s why some great religious leaders have been given the title of “Doctor of the Church.” And the first woman to ever receive this title was Saint Teresa of Avila. St. Teresa was intelligent AND hardheaded, industrious AND charming. She worked lots but she also prayed lots. Teresa founded convents and monasteries, traveled all over Spain at a time when most people never traveled beyond their own neighborhoods, and wrote letters and books that are still studied and appreciated today—more than 300 years after her death!
