World Meeting of Families 2015
Thank you!
There are so many people
who give of themselves for
this community in a variety
of ways. On behalf of the
community, I want to thank
all those women, men and
children who took time out
of their busy schedules to
help clean and decorate the
church for Christmas. We thank all those who
worked with our children as they participated
in the celebrations of our Advent and
Christmas seasons. We are blessed with
beautiful choirs. Working together, each of us
with our own gifts and talents, we give birth
to Christ within our community. What a grace
our community is. Merry Christmas!

For some people, the
gift of family is as obvious
as their nearest relative.
And for others, the curse of
family is demonstrated by
the same method. Perhaps
it’s fair to say that family is
an ongoing adventure in
love that provides ample
opportunities for
forgiveness. In fact, anyone who expects to love
without also anticipating some mileage in the terrain
of forgiveness is going to be very disappointed.
Joseph and Mary bring their newborn to the temple,
full of the first flush of family love. They are not
thinking about their son’s potential for future
importance on the national scene, much less the
historical one. They don’t have the big clashing
politics of Simeon’s prophecy in mind at all when
they present their child to God. But no sooner do
they make the required offering of their baby when
destiny intrudes on their domesticity. This baby
won’t belong to them for long. He is given away
from the first burst of angel song.

Since its inception by St.
John Paul II in 1994, the
World Meeting of Families
had strengthened the
sacred bonds of families
across the globe. Held
every three years and sponsored by the Holy See’s Pontifical Council for the Family, the World Meeting of Families is
the world’s largest Catholic gathering of families. Each
World Meeting of Families has a theme that energizes and
enlivens the event while adding great depth of meaning to
our understanding of families. The theme of the World Meeting of Families—Philadelphia 2015 held September 22-27,
is “Love is our Mission: The Family Fully Alive,” emphasizing the impact of the love and life of families on our society.
Pope Francis formally announced his intention to attend the
World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia. This visit will
mark his first to the United States as pope. He will be only
the fourth reigning Pontiff to visit our nation in its history.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says this
about the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick:
"The special grace of the sacrament of the Anointing of the
Sick has as its effects: the uniting of the sick person to the
passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole
Church; the strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in
a Christian manner the sufferings of illness or old age; the
forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain
it through the sacrament of penance; the restoration of
health, if it is conducive to the salvation of his soul; the
preparation for passing over to eternal life" (CCC 1532).

took this picture on his recent trip to
Italy. It is called “Presentation of Jesus
in the Temple” by Ambrogio Lorenzetti,
painted in 1342. The painting originally
decorated the altar of St. Crescentius in
the Cathedral of Siena but it became
part of the Uffizi Museum of Florence’s
collection in 1913.
