William Knight Elementary School
A community of learners dedicated to developing responsible, respectful, skilled and compassionate citizens.
Dear Knight Community,
During the past few weeks we have seen our school community come together
to support the many Canby families that are struggling as the weather has
become colder and wetter. Our school community has reached far into their
pantries and clothes closets to support those in need. By the bagfuls, students
have brought in extra non-perishable food items and gently used coats and
jackets. The students have shown sheer joy on their faces as they have
watched the collection of donated items increase. As of Thursday, December
10th our school has collected over 2,600 food items. Thank you!
It is my hope that this time of year continues to bring this same joy to your
home. I am fortunate that I get to see your children in an environment that
encourages kindness, sharing, and thoughtfulness. Children do not need
more electronics and hand held devices. They need to know that the adults
in their lives love and care for them, unconditionally. They need consistency
and structure. They need opportunities to give of themselves and to share. They need us! Thank you for all of the loving guidance and time you give
them. Childhood is incredibly too brief.

Third Annual Hour of Code Event
This week, all of our students, kindergarten through sixth grade, participated in
the Hour of Code event. This is the third annual event and we here at Knight
have taken the challenge all three years!
When the students are in the computer lab, they are working through
programming challenges on the code.org website. Each student paces
themselves and works through each level independently. These challenges
consist mostly of moving a character to a destination and having the
character perform a task. Students are using Blockly, which allows them to
snap directive blocks together in order to fulfill the instructions. The blocks are
actually Javascript, a computer language, simplified for the younger user. This
year, code.org added the ability to have students choose to write the
Javascript themselves, which provides an extra challenge.
We will be using code.org through mid-January. Please take a look at code.org
at home and see what your kids are working on. You will see that problem
solving, spacial awareness, and perseverance are a huge part of this event.

State Report Card
The State Report Cards are produced by the Oregon Department of Education and their purpose is to provide a
broad overview of how each school is doing. The fact that our school serves close to 400 Kindergarten through Sixth
grade students, who come from very diverse backgrounds, creates a rich and engaging school culture. We pride
ourselves on being compassionate, critical thinkers . We are also proud of the overall academic growth we have
made as a school community. We will continue to foster excellent communication of critical thinking skills, which are
foundational to reading, writing, mathematics, science and the social sciences. Our overall academic scores indicate
that we outperformed the state average as well as the average for schools that are similar to us (similar demographic
profile with regards to socioeconomic, English language proficiency and special education eligibility). Additionally, this
report indicates that there are areas of improvement needed within some of our subgroups. We have plans in place to
address this need through professional development for teachers, direct instruction of the Common Core State
Standards, and parent education opportunities. It is a pleasure to be a part of something so worthwhile and so
promising as the education of Knight Elementary students!

Escuela Primaria William Knight
Comunidad de aprendices para desarrollar ciudadanos, responsables, respetuosos, preparados y compasivos.
Estimada Comunidad de Knight,
Durante las últimas semanas hemos visto a nuestra comunidad escolar unir
esfuerzos para ayudar a las muchas familias de Canby que están teniendo
dificultades debido a que el clima se está poniendo más frio y lluvioso. Nuestra
comunidad escolar ha donado alimentos de sus alacenas y ropa de sus armarios
para ayudar a aquellos pasando momentos difíciles. En bolsas repletas, los
estudiantes han traído alimentos de comida no perecederos y abrigos y
chamarras casi nuevas. Los rostros de los estudiantes muestran una alegría
inmensa al ver cómo su colección de artículos donados aumenta. A partir del
jueves, 10 de diciembre nuestra escuela ha recaudado más de 2,600 productos
de comida. ¡Gracias!
Espero que esta temporada del año continúe trayéndoles a su hogar la misma
alegría. Tengo la fortuna de ver a sus hijos en un ambiente que fomenta la
bondad, el compartir y la consideración por los demás. Los niños no necesitan
más cosas electrónicas y aparatos portátiles. Ellos necesitan saber que los adultos
en sus vidas los quieren y los cuidan, incondicionalmente. Ellos necesitan
consistencia y estructura. Necesitan tener oportunidades para dar de sí mismos y
para compartir. ¡Nos necesitan! Gracias por todos los consejos cariñosos y el
tiempo que comparten con ellos. La niñez es increíblemente muy corta.

Hour of Code (la Hora de Código)
Esta semana, todos nuestros estudiantes, de Kínder a sexto grado, participaron en
el evento de la Hora de Código. ¡Éste es el tercer año del evento y nosotros aquí
en la Knight hemos aceptado este reto los tres años! Cuando los estudiantes están en el salón de computadoras, están trabajando en
retos de programación en el sitio web code.org. Cada estudiante toma su tiempo
y trabaja independientemente en cada nivel. Estos retos consisten mayormente en
mover un símbolo hacia un lugar y hacer que el símbolo desempeñe un trabajo.
Los estudiantes están usando Blockly, el cual les permite conectar bloques
directivos para así llevar a cabo las instrucciones. En efecto los bloques son
Javascript, un lenguaje de computación, simplificado para los usuarios más
jóvenes. Este año, code.org añadió el que los estudiantes puedan escribir el
Javascript ellos mismos, lo cual provee un reto adicional.
Estaremos usando code.org hasta mediados de enero. Por favor visiten el sitio
web code.org en casa y vean en lo que están trabajando sus hijos. Verán que la
resolución de problemas, el estar consciente de sus alrededores y la perseverancia
son gran parte de este evento.

Boletín de notas del estado
Agradecemos que tomen el tiempo para revisar nuestro reporte estatal escolar. El reporte estatal es realizado por el
Departamento de Educación de Oregon y su propósito es de proporcionar un resumen general de cómo se está
desempeñando cada escuela. El hecho de que nuestra escuela da servicios a casi 400 estudiantes de Kínder a sexto grado
los cuales provienen de muy diversos orígenes genera una cultura escolar enriquecedora y participativa. Nos enorgullece ser
pensadores compasivos y analíticos. También estamos orgullosos del rendimiento académico en general que hemos tenido
como comunidad escolar. Continuaremos promoviendo la excelente comunicación de las habilidades del pensamiento
analítico, las cuales son el cimiento para la lectura, escritura, matemáticas, ciencias y estudios sociales. Nuestras
calificaciones académicas generales indican que superamos el promedio estatal como también el promedio de las escuelas
que son similares a la nuestra (un perfil demográfico similar con respecto a lo socioeconómico, el dominio del idioma inglés y
la elegibilidad en la educación especial) . Además, este informe escolar indica que existen áreas en las que hay que mejorar
en algunos de nuestros subgrupos. Tenemos planes establecidos para abordar esta necesidad por medio del desarrollo
profesional de los maestros, enseñanza directa de los Estándares Académicos Fundamentales y oportunidades educativas
para los padres de familia. ¡Es un placer ser parte de algo que vale tanto la pena y tan prometedor como lo es la educación
de los estudiantes de la Primaria Knight!
