Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time–Jn 6:1-15
Jesus went across the
Sea of Galilee. A
large crowd followed
him, because they
saw the signs he was
performing on the
sick. Jesus went up
on the mountain,
and there he sat
down with his
disciples. The Jewish
feast of Passover was
near. When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was
coming to him, he said to Philip, “Where can we buy enough food
for them to eat?” He said this to test him, beca use he himself
knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, “Two
hundred days’ wages worth of food would not be enough for each
of them to have a little.” One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother
of Simon Peter, said to him, “There is a boy here who has fiv e
barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?”
Jesus said, “Have the people recline.” Now there was a great deal
of grass in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in
number. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed
them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as
they wanted. When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples,
“Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.”
So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with
fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than
they could eat. When the people saw the sign he had done, they
said, “This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the
world.” Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry
him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain

With today's
two accounts of
feeding miracles
and the psalm
response about
the Lord's hand
feeding us, it is
easy to gloss
over the
marvelous
hymn in
Ephesians. It is built around the most potent biblical
numbers: one, three, and seven. The core of it is the word
"one" expressed seven times. Three of these describe the
church: one body, one Spirit, one hope; the next three are
the foundations of the church: one Lord [Jesus], one faith,
one baptism. All of these are bound up together in the one
Father of all. While we might feel daunted by the prospect
of duplicating the wonders worked by Elisha and Jesus in
the feeding of multitudes, Ephesians gives us a more
realistic way to live and "feed" others as the church: by
living in humility and gentleness, by acting with patience,
bearing with each other in love, and always seeking and
striving to preserve unity through peace. Who among us
cannot increase the way we "feed" the church and the world
by living this way? We are always called upon to "feed" the
world in the literal sense; but our mission as church tells us
that others are also fed by the way we live and act each
moment of each day.

St. Ignatius of Loyola -July 31
St. Ignatius was born in the family castle in Guipúzcoa, Spain, the youngest of 13 children,
and was called Ińigo. When he was old enough, he became a page, and then a soldier of Spain
to fight against the French. A cannon ball and a series of bad operations ended his
military career in 1521. While St. Ignatius recovered, he read the lives of the saints, and
decided to dedicate himself to becoming a soldier of the Catholic Faith. Soon after he
experienced visions, but a year later suffered a trial of fears and scruples, driving him almost
to despair. Out of this experience he wrote his famous "Spiritual Exercises". After traveling and
studying in different schools, he finished in Paris, where he received his degree at the age of
43. Many first hated St. Ignatius because of his humble Lifestyle. Despite this, he attracted
several followers at the university, including St. Francis Xavier, and soon started his order
called The Society of Jesus, or Jesuits. There are 38 members of the Society of Jesus who have
been declared Blessed, and 38 who have been canonized as saints. He died at the age of 65.
The Italian Mass will be celebrated on July 26 at 4:00 PM in the Chapel.

O, Lord God of hosts, O God of our salvation, O God who alone workest wonders, do thou now
look down with mercy and compassion on thy humble servants and out of love for mankind
hearken and have mercy on us. Look with mercy, we pray thee, O Lord, on those of our sons and
daughters who now serve in our Armed Forces, and who in obedience to their superiors have for
our sakes placed themselves in harm’s way. Grant that those who request the protection of thy
right hand may be overpowered by no adverse force, and may the invited defense of thy mighty
power shield thy faithful sons and daughters. Watch over them, O Lord, and bring them back
safely to those who love them. Grant courage and steadfast faith to them and to
those who long for their return. Bring a quick and bloodless end to these
conflicts and spare the lives of the innocent. Grant no increase to the
Numbers of widows and orphans and relieve the privations of the bereaved and wounded, whether
wounded in body or in soul. Restore peace in our day, O Lord, that thy truth may go forth unhindered, for
Thou, O Lord, art the Prince of Peace and art ever-glorified with thine unoriginate
Father and the all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

San Ignacio de Loyola– 31 de Julio
¡Lo que no sabías de San Ignacio de Loyola!
A San Ignacio de Loyola se le conoce comúnmente como el fundador de los Jesuitas, su experiencia
espiritual le dio vida a la espiritualidad ignaciana y a los ejercicios espirituales. Un hecho menos conocido de
su vida es que la herida que recibió con una bala de cañón en una batalla fue exactamente lo que lo condujo a
la conversión. Sin esta conversión, no habría Jesuitas ni espiritualidad ignaciana.
A continuación vamos a exponer siete anécdotas curiosas de la vida de San Ignacio de Loyola que es extraño
escucharlas en una conversación normal acerca de este santo del siglo XVI.
Una vez, San Ignacio dejó que un burro decidiera si mataría o no a un individuo que había ofendido a la
Virgen María. Soltó la rienda al burro para ver si seguía al culpable. (Afortunadamente el burro siguió un
camino que lo alejó del grosero que ofendió a María).
Después de las curaciones por su herida de bala de cañón, pensó que su pierna no había quedado bien como
para lucir sus mallas de moda de la época. ¡Por eso le ordenó al doctor que le rompiera la pierna otra vez y se la acomodara de
nuevo!
San Ignacio podría ser el único santo canonizado con un registro notariado en el departamento de policía - por organizar una riña
nocturna con la intención de infligir un daño serio.
Fue llevado ante la Inquisición española en varias ocasiones.
A los 33 años tuvo que ir a tomar lecciones de latín en clases para adolescentes.
A veces lloraba tanto por su devoción en la Misa que simplemente no podía seguir adelante y hasta llegó a temer que perdería su
vista.
Escribió a mano más de 6,800 cartas en su vida, con ello se convirtió en el más prolífico de los escritores de cartas de su tiempo –
o quizá de todos los tiempos.

fiesta de los judíos. Al levantar Jesús; os ojos y ver que venía
mucha gente, dice a Felipe: “Dónde vamos a comprar panes para
que coman éstos?” Se lo decía para probarle, porque él sabía lo que
iba a hacer. Felipe le contestó: “Doscientos denarios de pan no
bastan para que c ada uno tome un poco.” Le uno de los
discípulos, Andrés, el hermano de Simón Pedro: “Aquí hay un
muchacho que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos peces; pero qué
es eso para tantos?” Dijo Jesús: “Haced que se recueste la gente.”
Había en un lugar mucha hierba. Se recosta ron, pues, los hombres
en número de unos cinco mil. Tomó entonces Jesús los panes y,
después de dar gracias, los partió entre los que estaban recostados
y lo mismo los peces, todo lo que quisieron. Cuando se saciaron,
dice a sus discípulos: “Recoged los trozos sobrantes para que nada
se pierda.” Los recogieron, pues, y llenaron doce canastos con los
trozos de los cinco panes de cebada que sobraron a los que habían
comido. Al ver la gente la señal que había realizado, decía: “Este es
verdaderamente el profeta que iba a venir al mundo.” Dá ndose
cuenta Jesús de que intentaban venir a tomarle por la fuerza para
hacerle rey, huyó de nuevo al monte él solo.
Reflexión Dominical
Al oir las narraciones de como Eliseo y Jesús multiplican los alimentos,
y el salmo responsorial sabré como la mano del Señor nos alimenta, es fácil
caer en la tentación de pasar por alto el maravilloso himno de la carta a los
efesios en la Segunda lectura. El himno se centra en los números mas potentes de la tradición bíblica: el uno, el tres y el siete. La medula del himno
es el numero uno, repetido siete veces. Tres de Elías se refieren ala Iglesia: un solo cuerpo, un solo Espíritu, como también una sola es la
esperanza. Los próximas tres son los fundamentos de la Iglesia: un solo
Señor, una sola fe, un solo bautismo. Y todos estos se juntan en un solo
Dios y Padre de todos. La idea de repetir los milagros obrados por Eliseo y
por Jesús al alimentar las multitudes nos desalienta, clara esta, pero la carta a los efesios nos ofrece un modo mas
realizable de vivir como Iglesia y de alimentar a los demás en la Iglesia: ser siempre humildes y amables; ser
comprensivos y soportarnos mutuamente con amor, y esforzarnos en mantenemos unidos en el Espíritu con el
vinculo de la paz. (,Quien de nosotros no puede "alimentar" a la comunidad de la Iglesia viviendo de esta
manera? Es verdad que siempre estamos llamados a "alimentar" al mundo en el sentido literal de la palabra, pero
nuestra misión como Iglesia también nos dice que a los demás también hay que alimentarlos por la manera en
que vivimos y actuamos cada momento de cada día.
