Talking about how long someone
has been doing something
To ask how long someone has been doing something we follow this format:
¿Cuánto tiempo hace que + (present tense) verb?
For instance, if we want to ask how long someone has been playing the guitar, we would ask...
¿Cuánto tiempo hace que tocas la guitarra?
“How long have you been playing the guitar?”
How would you ask the following questions?
•
How long have you been studying Spanish?
•
How long have you lived in Marengo?
•
How long have you (all) attended MCHS?
To answer these questions we use this outline:
Hace + (amount of time) + que + present tense verb
1

For instance...
Hace 3 años que toco la guitarra.
“I’ve been playing the guitar for 3 years”
How would you express the following?
•
I’ve been playing soccer for 5 years.
•
I’ve been studying Spanish for 2 years.
•
We’ve been living in Marengo for 10 years.
