Use the following patterns to find out or say how long something has been
going on:
¿Cuánto tiempo hace + que + present?
hace + period of time + que + present
¿Cuánto tiempo hace que
se encuentra mal?
Hace tres días que tiene la gripe.
For how long has he felt bad?
He has had the flu for three days.
Use the following patterns to find out or say how long ago something happened:
¿Cuánto tiempo hace + que + preterite?
hace + period of time + que + preterite
¿Cuánto tiempo hace que
salió del hospital?
Hace una semana que volvió
a casa.
How long ago did she leave
the hospital?
She returned home a week ago.
To tell how long something had been going on in the past, use:
hacía + period of time + que + imperfect tense
Hacía una hora que esperaba
al médico.
She had been waiting an hour
for the doctor.
Note that hace or hacía can be combined with desde for emphasis.
Está en el hospital desde hace
dos semanas.
Estaba enfermo desde hacía
tres semanas.
