We are excited to announce the release of a new mobile app for our parish. This App is
available for download free in Android and Apple Stores. The App is a new and effective
way for the parish to communicate with you and for you to stay connected with the parish.
The App is PACKED with prayer resources, including Liturgy of the Hours, Daily Mass
Readings, the Order of the Mass, the Bible, the Catechism, and a digital rosary, as well as
educational resources, parish events, event sign up forms, mass schedules, photo capture
tools, and more. Best of all, we can alert you of extra special happenings and cancellations
via the app’s push notifications system. (We promise not to send these too frequently!)
To App is available in English and Spanish. See pages 3 and 4 for instructions on how to
download the App on your smartphone or tablet. Our App is still a work in progress, and

Being Thankful
A moral theology professor of mine used to tell us that gratitude was the fundamental
principle for living the Christian life. He would say that the ideal way we live our lives is out
of thanksgiving for what God has given us. In the Masses this weekend, and for the next four
weeks, we will be reflecting on the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John. This is probably the
most important section of any Gospel for understanding the Catholic theology of the
Eucharist and what it means for us.
The word “eucharist” means “thanksgiving”. Every day members of the St. Monica
community come together and consume the Body and Blood of our Lord and give thanks for
the sacrifice Christ made to save us from our sins. This gratitude then calls us to make similar
sacrifices in our own lives for the good of our spouses, our children, and our neighbors. As
we reflect on the great gift of the Eucharist these next few weeks, let us remember also how
it calls us to be grateful and to use our gifts to help save others in the same way Christ has
saved us.

Un profesor de teología moral solía decirnos que la gratitud es un principio fundamental
para vivir la vida Cristiana. Él decía que la manera ideal de vivir nuestras vidas es siendo
agradecidos con lo que Dios nos ha dado. En las Misas de este fin de semana, y en las
próximas cuatro semanas, estaremos reflexionando en los seis capítulos del Evangelio de
Juan. Esta es probablemente la más importante sección de cualquiera de los Evangelios para
entender la teología Católica de la Eucaristía y lo que significa para nosotros.
La palabra “eucaristía” significa “acción de gracias”. Cada día los miembros de la comunidad

Stewardship at St. Monica
Cultivating a Community of Stewardship
Much as musicians or sports figures cultivate their gifts by
learning how to use them better and practicing more, so do all
people do that with any gift God has given them. Catholics
should learn not only more about stewardship and what it is, but
also how to better use the gifts God has given them.
In the future, this column will be used to help St. Monica
parishioners understand how to become better stewards in all
areas of their lives (eg, their bodies, technology, civic life) and
how to better use those gifts as God call them to. We’ll provide
stewardship education, youth stewardship components, voter
forums, planned giving information, parenting workshops, and
more.

LEGION OF MARY
ABOUT THE MINISTRY
The Legion of Mary is the largest apostolic organization of lay
people in the Catholic Church, with more than 3 million active
members in almost every country of the world. It has been
active in the United States since 1931, has been approved by
the last 6 Popes, and was endorsed by the Second Vatican
Council. The main purpose of the Legion of Mary is to give glory
to God through the sanctification of its members.
SPIRITUAL GIFTS REQUIRED: The Legion of Mary is open to all
Catholics who faithfully practice their faith; desire participation
in the Church's apostolate through membership in the Legion;
are prepared to fulfill each and every duty which active
membership in the Legion involves.

WHAT DO THEY DO?
Members become instruments of the Holy Spirit through a
program of prayer and service. Works include door-to-door
evangelization, parishioner visitation, prison ministry, visitation
of the sick or aged, crowd contact, religious education, visiting
the newly baptized, Pilgrim Virgin Statue rotations, and meeting
the other spiritual needs of the parish community. The Legion is,
in essence, an extension of the heart and hands of the pastor.
TO GET INVOLVED
The first step is to be a guest at a meeting of the Legion of Mary.
St. Monica members pray the rosary every Sunday at 2:00 pm.
They meet the second Saturday of the month at 10:00 am.
Guests are always welcome and can go on one of the work
assignments with an experienced member if they choose. To
visit or find out more about the Legion of Mary, please call
Miriam Rosales at 317-298-3827.
St. Monica is hosting the regional conference of the Legion of
Mary from April 9—16. All meals and activities take place at St.
Monica, but host families are needed to house those attending
the meeting.
Get Involved — Live Your Faith!
New Security Measures at St. Monica
It is wonderful to have such an active, busy parish, and we
work hard to provide the space and resources needed by our
ministries. Unfortunately, we have had several incidents
lately involving non-parishioners panhandling and roaming
the building, using the phones, copy machines, and meeting
rooms for non-parish business. As a result, effective
immediately, we will be locking all parish doors at all times,
except for 30 minutes prior to and after Mass times. We will
also be locking the volunteer hub after office hours. Of
course, we are happy to make copies for you in the Parish
Office, and Mel Ullrich, our Volunteer Coordinator, is happy
to meet you onsite for ministry projects when needed. As
good stewards, keeping our parishioners safe and protecting
our parish assets is a priority at St. Monica. We appreciate all
the wonderful work you do here at St. Monica and apologize
for any inconvenience this may cause.
Is it Bowling Season Already??
Well…it is not time to start the league…..but it IS time to
decide that this is the year that you are going to join the St.
Monica Adult Mixed Bowling League! As you read this, you
are probably thinking that it would be a cold day in you know
where before you would do that. BUT, you have no idea
what you are missing. A social, non-competitive league, in its
21st consecutive year, bowls every other Sunday evening,
starting in early September at Woodland Bowl. Start time …
6:30 p.m. Both adult couples and singles are welcome, 2
men and 2 women to a team. This is the one ministry that
will get you connected to the members of this church. Signups will be in the narthex in August, or if you want to sign up

Marriage in Focus
Marriage in Focus is a new program at St. Monica for couples
who have been married a month to 50+ years. Its purpose is
to enable married couples to share their sacramental
marriage through faith, fellowship, and food. The event
consists of a pitch-in dinner, followed by a speaker. The next
event is Saturday, August 15 after the 5pm Mass in St.
Augustine Room. Speakers Mike and Amy Magan will share
the impact of social media on a marriage. For questions or to

Adorers Needed for Perpetual Adoration
Eucharistic Adoration is a great way to spend quiet time with
the Lord, and to discern the very real presence of Jesus Christ
in the Eucharist. 24-Hour Adoration is held at the Divine
Mercy Chapel at 3356 W. 30th Street, Indianapolis (next to
Cardinal Ritter High School). The chapel especially needs
adorers weekdays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. You may sign up
in the narthex after Mass. Or for more information, contact
Sr. Mary Ann Schumann at 317-926-1963.
Broken Narthex Doors
You may have noticed that the door opener on one of
our main entrance doors is broken. We have ordered a
new part for it, but it will not arrive until around midAugust. In the meantime, please use the other set of
doors. We apologize for any inconvenience this may
cause you, and we appreciate your patience!
Young at Heart Picnic—Save the Date!
Our Annual Young at Heart Picnic is August 16 in the
Holy Family Room. We will provide the chicken.
Groups 1 and 2 bring dessert. Groups 3 and 4 bring
vegetables, salad, or bread and butter. All parishioners
over age 55 are welcome to attend!
"GRACED" Retreat
Girls grades 6-12 are invited to spend the day at All
Saints Parish in Yorkville, Indiana on Saturday,
August 22, 12:30-5:30 pm enjoying the beauty of
womanhood expressed in the religious life. Four
orders of Religious Sisters will join us for a day of
prayer and adoration, social interaction, crafts and
snacks. There is a 5:30 pm Mass that all are invited to
attend. Young women (High School graduates and
above) are welcome to share a meal with the sisters
following the evening Mass. Reservations are needed
only for the women's dinner. For more information,

Religious Education
Confirmation Reminder: Thank you for sending in your
confirmation registration, baptismal certificates,
confirmation names and sponsors for our youth who will be
confirmed on October 1. Service hour forms are due
by September 17. If you have misplaced any of these forms
please call or e-mail the Religious Education Office at
253-2193 or mjtday@stmonicaindy. org. Thank you!
Sunday School: Registration packets will be sent to
families after August 10 who were registered last year in
our Sunday morning Faith Formation program. The program
is for children 3 years-old by August 2015 through 8th
grade. If you are new in the parish and need a packet,
please call or e-mail Religious Education Office at 253-2193
or mjtday@stmonicaindy. org. and a packet will be sent to
you after August 10. Please return your registration forms
and payment back to the Religious Education Office. On
Sunday, August 16 and August 23, we will also have onsite Sunday School registration from 9:00am to 2:30pm—
excluding Mass times— in the Emmaus Center. We are
blessed to have over 800 youth in our program. If you wish
to teach or assist with our program, please contact us--we
need 100 catechists/assistants, and it is a wonderful
ministry to be a part of!

Sta. Mónica estará patrocinando la conferencia regional de la Legión de

Puertas Quebradas en el Nártex
Nuevas Reglas de Seguridad en Sta. Mónica
Tal vez ha notado que una de las puertas de la entrada
principal está quebrada. Hemos ordenado la parte, pero
no llegará sino hasta mediados de agosto. Por lo pronto,
por favor use las otras puertas. ¡Lo sentimos por
cualquier inconveniente que esto le puede causar, y
apreciamos su paciencia!
Es maravilloso tener una parroquia activa, ocupada, y trabajamos
muy duro para proveer un espacio y recursos necesarios para
nuestros ministerios. Desafortunadamente, hemos tenido varios
incidents últimamente en los que han estado involucrados personas
que no son feligreses mendigando y vagando en el edificio, usando
los teléfonos, las copiadoras, y los salones para reuniones no
relacionadas con la parroquia. Como resultado de esto, y siendo
efectivo inmediatamente, todas las puertas de la Iglesia estarán
cerradas en todo momento, excepto 30 minutos antes y después de
cada Misa. También quitaremos la copiadora del salón de voluntarios.
Este salón solo estará cerrado después de horas de oficina. Por

¿Intentado obtener respuestas información de cómo
encontrar recursos y servicios acerca de empleos, asistencia
con sus utilidades, consejo legal, ESL, acceso a cuidado de
salud, vivienda y otros servicios y programas? La Iglesia Santa
Mónica tiene una sucursal del Centro de Bienvenida al
Inmigrante abierto cada domingo de 2 p.m. a 5 p.m.

Se Necesitan Adoradores para la Adoración Perpetua
La Adoración Eucarística es una gran manera de pasar un
tiempo en la presencia del Señor, y para discernir la real
presencia de Jesucristo en la Eucaristía. Adoración de 24-Horas
al día se lleva a cabo en la Capilla de la Divina Misericordia en
el 3356 W. 30th Street, Indianapolis (enseguida de la
Secundaria Cardinal Ritter). La capilla necesita adoradores
especialmente entre semana de 8:00 am a 5:00 pm. Usted se
puede registrar en el nártex después de Misa. O para más

Talleres de Formación Contínua
Santa Mónica le invita a los talleres de formación
continua. Estos talleres le dan la oportunidad de crecer en su
fe bajo la luz de las enseñanzas Católicas. Los talleres se
realizan cada 3er domingo de cada mes de 2-4 PM en el salón
de San Agustín.
Legión de María
La Legión de María le invita a todas las personas a que nos
acompañen a recitar el Santo Rosario todos los domingos en la
Capilla a las 2:00pm (después de Misa de 12:30).
In FAMILY We Learn Endurance
A woman is eighty years old and struggling with
cancer. She needs someone to bring communion to
her at home because she can no longer come to
church. She has raised eight children. During the
early years when her children were still young, her
husband died. Even then, when she was a widow
juggling two jobs, caring for eight children on her
own with a learning-disabled child and trouble at the
Catholic school, the pastor asked her to make twenty
-six pies for the parish picnic – and she was
overjoyed: All these years later she has never
forgotten what a great gift she gave when she made
those pies, her specialty.
A family struggles to make it to the United States
from a place where there is no opportunity to make a
decent living. Along the way there is danger and
little to eat or drink. One of their children dies.
When they arrive in the States there is no welcoming
party – just the hard work of navigating a foreign
language, finding work, and sending children to
school.
A teen girl struggles with depression. A teen boy
is kicked out of school for possession of illegal
drugs. A tired dad begins a habit of prayer every
night, and sticks to it even when it feels dry and
unspectacular. A married couple find themselves at
odds for the first time, and begin to taste what “for
better or worse” really means.
This is Christian Endurance. Endurance means
we don’t just abandon hope or quit believing and
working because we fail or because things are tough,
even very tough. Endurance means living in trust
that God has everything – our own failures and sin
as well as the unjust and undeserved hardship we
face – in his large and capable hands. Endurance
means we are willing to take on the hard work of
change when God calls us to change, and to be
patient in our suffering when suffering comes.
Christian Endurance is about living in JOY and
HOPE because we know that God has never
abandoned us and is at every moment working to
bring us to himself, no matter how hard our
circumstances may be.
Christian Endurance is expressed at a funeral
liturgy when we say “life has changed, not ended” –
or in the Canticle of Zechariah, “Blessed be the
Lord, the God of Israel; he has come to his people
and
set
them
free...”
It is in the FAMILY that we first learn
Christian Endurance. Our parents are our first
teachers.
En la FAMILIA aprendemos la
Resistencia
Una mujer tiene ochenta años y está luchando contra
un cáncer. Ella necesita a alguien que le lleve la
comunión a su casa porque ya no puede venir a la
Iglesia. Ella crio a ocho hijos. Cuando sus niños eran
muy pequeños, su esposo murió. Siendo viuda tuvo que
arreglárselas para tener dos trabajos, cuidar de ocho
niños, uno de ellos con discapacidad de aprendizaje en la
escuela Católica, el párroco le pidió hacer veintiséis
pastelillos para una parrillada de la parroquia – y ella
estaba muy contenta: Después de todos estos años ella
nunca ha olvidado el gran regalo que ella dio al hacer
esos pastelillos, que son su especialidad.
Una familia lucha para llegar a los Estados Unidos de
un lugar donde no hay oportunidad para tener una vida
decente. En ese camino hay mucho peligro y muy poco
para comer o beber. Uno de los niños muere. Cuando
llegan a los Estados Unidos no hay una fiesta de
bienvenida – tan solo hay el trabajo arduo para navegar
con el idioma extraño, el encontrar trabajo, y enviar a sus
niños a la escuela.
Una joven adolescente lucha contra una depresión. Un
muchachito es expulsado de la escuela por posesión de
drogas ilegales. Un padre cansado empieza el hábito de
orar todas las noches, y lo sigue hacienda aun cuando
siente una sequedad y pocas ganas de hacerlo. Una
pareja casada se encuentra en desacuerdo por primera
vez, y empiezan a probar lo que en realidad significa “en
lo próspero y en lo adverso”.
Esta es la Resistencia Cristiana. Resistencia
significa que no abandonamos nuestra esperanza o
dejamos de creer y trabajar porque fallamos o porque las
cosas son difíciles. Resistencia significa vivir confiando
que Dios lo tiene todo – nuestras propias fallas y pecados
al igual que la dificultad injusta e inmerecida que
enfrentamos – en Sus manos grandes y capaces.
Resistencia significa que estamos dispuestos a aceptar el
trabajo arduo del cambio cuando Dios nos llama a
cambiar, y ser pacientes cuando llegue el sufrimiento. La
Resistencia Cristiana se trata de vivir el GOZO y la
ESPERANZA porque sabemos que Dios nunca nos
abandonará y que en todo momento está trabajando para
llevarnos más hacia Él, no importa que tan duras puedan
ser nuestras circunstancias.
La Resistencia Cristiana se expresa en la liturgia de un
funeral cuando decimos “la vida ha cambiado, no ha
terminado” – o en el Cántico de Zacarías, “Bendito sea el
Señor, el Dios de Israel; porque ha visitado y redimido a
su pueblo...”
Es en la FAMILIA donde aprendemos primero la
Resistencia Cristiana. Nuestros padres son nuestros
primeros maestros.
