Page 2 The Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year of Faith The Year of Faith officially began on October 11th! It’s not too early to be thinking about how you’ll get the most out of this special time. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops is suggesting ten ways in which Catholics may observe the Year of Faith, which will commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the twentieth anniversary of the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The ten suggestions include going to Mass and Confession; reading the Bible, saints’ lives, the Catechism, and the documents of the Second Vatican Council; and helping the needy, inviting others to Mass, volunteering at your parish, and striving to follow the Beatitudes. There’s a lot to be done, but don’t panic, we have plenty of time as our Year of Faith will conclude on the Solemnity of Christ the King in November 2013. Blessing of the Animals—October 6, 2012 October 14, 2012 Next Sunday is World Mission Sunday United with the Catholics of the world at the Table of the Lord, we recommit ourselves to our vocation, through Baptism, to be “missionaries of faith,” Our prayers and Eucharistic celebration next Sunday are directed in a special way toward our brothers and sisters throughout the world who are waiting to hear the joyous “Good News” of Jesus. Through our financial gifts, offered in next week’s collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, we become partners with missionaries who proclaim the Gospel and offer help and hope to the poor in mission countries. There are special envelopes in the pews today for this special collection, please take one home and return it in next week’s collection. When we pray for priests and religious, we actually pray for ourselves, since holy priests and religious should result in a holier people. When we pray for these servants of Christ, we also win the favor of Christ, for we, in so praying, are furthering His work. Moreover, by praying for vocations we are helping our children and our children’s children because we are using a meritorious means of preserving our faith for them. Page 5 The Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 14, 2012 Major Themes of the Year of Faith The major themes of this special year are the very foundation of our faith: —Belief in the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—and in the Paschal Mystery: the crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. —A deepened encounter with the risen Lord, who is the light of faith. —A renewed commitment to Mass and the Eucharist. It is most important that the Year of Faith should be approached with great joy as a celebration! Election 2012: Bishops Support Prop 34 to End Use of Death Penalty In a statement released last week, the California Catholic Conference issued strong support for Proposition 34 -- the initiative that will end the use of the death penalty in the Golden State and replace it with life imprisonment without parole. "We appeal to Californians to end a failed system of justice and choose life. Violence does not end violence. Killing in the name of the state will not end killing," said the Bishops. "As teachers of the Catholic faith, we consistently proclaim the intrinsic worth and the God-given dignity of all human life, whether innocent or guilty. We are all created in God's image. As ministers to the victims of crime, we recognize the profound anguish of those who have lost a loved one to violence. We offer them our prayers and the hope of a fuller sense of justice," said the Bishops. The Bishops also cited the 2005 statement from the U.S. Bishops, A Culture of Life and the Penalty of Death, outlining the public policy objections to the use of capital punishment: —"The original intent of the death penalty was the protection of society from those who had killed a fellow human being. However, in modern times the state can incarcerate those convicted of a capital crime for the rest of their lives---with no chance they will ever rejoin society. —"The application of the penalty of death can be irreversibly wrong---as has been demonstrated by many condemned individuals who were later exonerated with DNA testing." Pope Benedict XVI, in his Address to the U.S. Bishops in 2008, reminded them and all Catholics that participation in public life is part and parcel of being a Catholic. He stated, “Any tendency to treat religion as a private matter must be resisted. Only when their faith permeates every aspect of their lives do Christians become truly open to the transforming power of the Gospel.” Support life and liberty! Let your voice be heard! “Accustom yourself continually to make many acts of love, for they enkindle and melt the soul.”
