Compressed Natural Gas: A Smart Alternative Fuel
Have you ever considered switching to a cleaner fueling option for your vehicle? If so, a natural gas vehicle may be
for you. Natural gas vehicles run on compressed natural gas, often referred to as CNG, and are an environmentally
friendly alternative to traditional gasoline-powered cars. CNG is used by more than 153,000 vehicles in the United
States and is a clean-burning alternative to gasoline.
The Advantage of Natural Gas
Environmentally Friendly: Natural gas vehicles produce significantly fewer pollutants than
gasoline vehicles and have little or no emissions during fueling. According to NGVAmerica,
cars that run on natural gas can reduce smog producing gases, such as carbon monoxide
and nitrogen oxides, by more than 70 percent and 75 percent, respectively, when compared
to gasoline and diesel vehicles.
A Safer Fuel: Unlike liquid fuels, which will pool on the ground during a leak, natural gas is
lighter than air and rises into the atmosphere. The ignition temperature of natural gas is nearly
twice that of gasoline, meaning it is less likely to burn than gasoline.
A Variety of Vehicle Options: Natural gas vehicles are available at authorized dealerships in a variety of models,
including dedicated (fueled only by CNG) and bi-fuel (fueled by both CNG and gasoline). Dedicated CNG and
extended range vehicles may be found at specific dealerships or converted at certified conversion centers.
