POSTOPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS AFTER MEATOPLASTY
Your child had surgery today to correct meatal stenosis.
WHAT TO EXPECT: There are absorbable/dissolvable stitches around the urethral opening which will
dissolve over the next few days. Beginning the day after surgery, gently squeeze open the meatus and
apply Vaseline 3-4 times daily for 3-4 weeks. This will help to keep the opening from scarring back
down. There is generally minimal discomfort postoperatively. There may be some discomfort with
urination (dysuria). This will usually resolve in a few days. There may be a little blood in the urine for a
few days. This is normal.
PAIN MANAGEMENT: Plain Tylenol may be adequate for pain control in the infant population. If
your child is over 6 months of age, you can use ibuprofen, Advil or Motrin. We may give you a
prescription for pain management to be given every 6 hours, as needed. You may give this to your child
to control more severe pain. If your child is older than 6 months, we will ask you to alternate the
prescription pain medication and ibuprofen every 4 hours.
BATHING: Your child may resume normal bathing the day after surgery.
DIET: Begin with clear liquids (water, apple juice). If this is well tolerated, you may begin their regular
diet by the evening of surgery. Nausea and vomiting may occur after anesthesia. If this happens, do not
feed you child for 1-2 hours. You may then begin clear liquids again.
ACTIVITIES: No PE/swimming/bicycles for three days.
FOLLOW-UP: Please call the office at 602-279-1697 and schedule a follow up appointment for 3 weeks
after your child’s surgery.

INSTRUCCIONES PARA CUIDAR A SU NIÑO DESPUÉS DE UNA MEATOPLASTIA
Hoy han operado a su niño para corregir un estrechamiento o estenosis del meato.
QUÉ ESPERAR: Su niño tendrá colocados puntos absorbibles alrededor del meato uretral (el orificio de
la uretra por donde sale la orina) que se disolverán durante los próximos días. A partir del día de la
cirugía, apriete el meato delicadamente para mantenerlo abierto y aplique vaselina o bacitracina 2 veces
por día durante una semana. Esto ayudará a evitar que el orificio forme cicatrices y vuelva a cerrarse.
Generalmente los niños sienten molestias mínimas después de esta operación. Puede haber algunas
molestias al orinar (disuria). Generalmente estas molestias desaparecen después de unos días. Puede
haber un poco de sangre en la orina durante unos pocos días. Esto es normal.
MANEJO DEL DOLOR: Para bebes puede usar Tylenol regular para el control del dolor. Si su hijo
tiene más de 6 meses de edad, se puede utilizar Ibuprofeno, Advil, o Motrin. Le daremos una receta para
el tratamiento del dolor que se administra cada 6 horas, si es necesario. Si su niño es mayor de 6 meses,
debe alternal el medicamento recetado para el dolor, y Ibuprofeno, cada 4 horas.
BAÑOS: Su niño podrá volver a bañarse normalmente el día después de la cirugía.
DIETA: Empiece con líquidos claros (agua, jugo de manzana). Si el niño los tolera bien, puede empezar
a darle su dieta regular al anochecer del día de la cirugía. Después de la anestesia, el niño puede tener
náuseas y vómitos. Si esto ocurre, no lo alimente durante 1 ó 2 horas. Después de este período puede
volver a darle líquidos claros.
ACTIVIDADES: No hay restricciones.
CITA DE CONTROL: Por favor, llame al consultorio al (602) 279-1697 y pida una cita de control para
3 semanas después de la cirugía de su niño.
