The Community of Madrid lies at the centre of the second largest country in the European
Union. It hosts 6 public universities (Alcalá, Autónoma, Carlos III, Complutense, Politécnica
and Rey Juan Carlos), 6 private universities (Alfonso X el Sabio, Antonio de Nebrija, Camilo
José Cela, CEU-San Pablo, Europea de Madrid and Francisco de Vitoria), 2 Catholic
universities (Pontificia Comillas and Pontificia de Salamanca en Madrid), and the
headquarters of the National Open University (Universidad Nacional de Educación a
Distancia (UNED), as well as the Open University of Madrid (UDIMA), which is pending
authorisation to begin operating. The Community of Madrid has the highest concentration
of students in Spain and one of the highest in Europe.

The number of students registered in the region for the 2005-2006 academic year was:
• 186,820 in the public universities.
• 15,801 in affiliated centres linked to the public universities.
• 34,541 in the private universities.
• 35,732 with the Madrid centre of the Open University (UNED).
That makes a total of 272,894 students enrolled in these institutions. Many students from
other parts of Spain come to Madrid to study at University, as do many foreign students,
mainly from Latin America and Europe. Why? For many reasons:
• For academic success, attracted by the broad and diverse nature of the degrees
on offer and the prestige of Spanish universities.

• Because of the buoyant economy and social structure in the Community of
Madrid. It is a region where students have decent prospects of finding a job
and then later developing a career.
• Madrid's exciting cultural and leisure activities are another draw. The city is
known as an open, fun, friendly place, where you are likely to meet up with
interesting people from all over the world.
At present, the universities in the Community of Madrid are undergoing reforms. They
are bringing their teaching and education into line with their peers within the prestigious
European Higher Education Area.

1.1. University qualifications
Official university qualifications are valid throughout the country. They can be divided into:

• First-cycle qualifications: These take three academic years and once students
pass the corresponding exams, they are awarded their qualification. This can
be called a diploma in whatever their subject was or a teacher's certificate or
the entitlement to call themselves technical architects or technical engineers.

• First- plus second-cycle qualifications: These can last four, five or six years.
Students passing the corresponding exams will be awarded degrees
(licenciaturas) as graduates in their subject, or as fully qualified architects
or engineers.
• Only second-cycle qualifications: Students may only take these two-year
courses when they have a diploma or first-cycle degree, ie, following the first
two years of a four year qualification or the first three years of a five year
qualification. The qualification awarded is a licenciatura degree.
• Official post-graduate qualifications: The official post-grad studies are secondand third-cycle university studies. They are officially recognised by the Spanish
authorities and meet the European Higher Education Area standards. These
official post graduate programmes include Masters degrees and PhDs.
But apart from, or alongside these official qualifications, both the public and the private
universities offer students courses with private qualifications. These are NOT OFFICIAL
qualifications, ie, not part of the Spanish State system of qualifications, but they are
recognised by the awarding university and assessed by the private sector on the basis of
reputation. These universities establish their own access requirements.

Spain and the European Higher Education Area
The new university structure will be based on the following levels:
The first level will include first-cycle university studies. It prepares students to move
directly into the European work market with an appropriate professional qualification.
The second level, ie, post-graduate studies, includes the second-cycle courses and end
in a master's degree.
The third level leads to a doctorate, the top-level degree in higher education.

1.2. Public and private universities
Spanish universities can be either public (ie, State funded) or private:
Public universities in Madrid:

Alcalá, Autónoma, Carlos III, Complutense, Politécnica y Rey Juan Carlos.

These universities are financed with public money. Students only have to pay for the registration
fees. The public universities also have their own teaching centres and affiliated centres:
• The teaching centres belonging to the public universities can be divided
into faculties (facultades), higher technical colleges (escuelas técnicas
superiores), university schools (escuelas universitarias) and technical colleges
(escuelas técnicas).
• The affiliated centres of the public universities may be either public or private.
In the public affiliated centres students only have to pay the registration fees.
In the private affiliated centres they will also have to pay monthly teaching fees
throughout the course. At the end of the course, students receive a degree
from the public university to which the centre is affiliated. The study plan for
the affiliated centres is the same as that used in the public university. Those
wishing to do so may study the first cycle at an affiliated centre and then change
to the public university to study the second cycle.

In these universities, students must pay both the registration fees and the corresponding
monthly fees throughout the course.
Besides the public universities and the private universities, the Community of Madrid also
has authorised private centres, which provide university-level education in accordance
with educational systems from other countries. (Qualifications from these universities
cannot be automatically turned into official Spanish qualifications):

Access

Students must have a Baccalaureate or equivalent to entitle them to go to university.
If you wish to study at a Spanish university you must first get official convalidation for
your school studies. After that, you will sit a special entrance examination for foreign
students or Spanish students whose educational qualifications have been awarded
abroad. This is known as the university access test (Prueba de Acceso) or the selection
exam (Selectividad).
As of 1st June 2007, entrance examination will no longer be required for students from
educational systems in EU-member States or students who have studied in educational
systems in non-EU States that have signed the pertinent reciprocal international
agreements. In both cases, students must comply with the academic requirements
demanded for access to the university.

Requesting a place and enrolment
All the public universities in Madrid are accessed through the same clearing system.
When students have passed the Selectividad exam, they must fill in a single application
form stating which courses they wish to study in each university and order of preference.
Application envelopes are available from any of the public universities.
1% of all public-university places are reserved for foreign students.
What must you do

Students wishing to study in public or private affiliated centres should request an
application form from the centre itself, and then send the application form to the university
to which that centre is affiliated.

• Students who have studied Vocational Training, Module III and Training Cycles
may hand in their applications in either phase, although phase A is recommended
as it has fewer applicants.

What do you need to study in Spain?

• You can enter Spain using a valid passport or national ID card establishing the
nationality of the holder.
• If you are staying in Spain for official studies, a valid passport or national ID
card will be sufficient for registration, etc.
• You may enter, leave and stay in Spain freely providing you comply with
prevailing legislation.
• You are entitled to access the market for jobs or self-employment under
the same conditions as Spanish nationals, with the exception of civil
service posts.

Are you a citizen from a country outside the EU, the EES or the SC? If so,
What do you need to study in Spain?
You will be authorised to stay in the country for the period corresponding to the course
you have registered for.
In order to obtain authorisation for studying a course you must:
a) Request the corresponding student visa (which authorises the holder to stay
in Spain for the purpose of courses, studies, research work or training) before
coming to Spain, from the Spanish diplomatic missions or consulates in your
country of origin or residence. You will be expected to provide academic
documentation accrediting your qualifications.

b) Apply for a foreigner's identity card (NIE) in person within one month
following your arrival in Spain. You can do this at the Oficina de Extranjeros
(http://extranjeros.mtas.es), Jefatura Superior de Policía (www.policia.es)
or Comisaría de Policía (www.policia.es) in the town in which you are staying
while in Spain. This authorisation will allow you to stay in Spain for a specific
period of time. It will not be required if the course you are studying lasts for
less than six months, or if you have obtained the appropriate visa.

Madrid has various different alternatives for students wishing to live in the city.

Rental will vary according to conditions… But to rent a room in a shared flat will cost
a minimum of € 300.

Grants from the Spanish Ministry of Education
• General grants:
These grants cover expenses for travel, accommodation, learning materials,
theses and projects, and university registration fees.
The amount of financial assistance given for the registration fees of students
at private Universities will not exceed the fees for public universities for the
equivalent courses in the same Autonomous Community.
• Mobility grants:
Mobility grants are for university students and students studying in higher
education institutions who have to attend courses in an Autonomous
Community different from that of their family residence.

Madrid has been a meeting point for different cultures over many centuries. It has a vast
spectrum of cultural and leisure activities, with enough different kinds of entertainment
to satisfy the very diverse tastes of the millions of people who visit the region each year.

The capital city, Madrid, is cosmopolitan. Despite the increasing number of tourists visiting
us throughout the year, it continues to be as friendly and welcoming as ever. It is famous
for its nightlife and vitality. Although its comforts, efficiency and fun are state of the art,
it is still easy to feel you are taking a trip back in time when you visit its old historic centre
and enjoy its cultural traditions.
Its extensive transport network makes it is easy to travel from A to B, wherever you may
be. It has one of the best hotel infrastructures in the country, ranging from the most
exclusive to the more cheap and cheerful (and clean). Tradition and modernity live side
by side in a dynamic, modern society. A visit to the Community of Madrid is a must for
anyone wishing to understand Spanish culture.
The History of Madrid
The city we know today had its origins in the times of the Muslim Emir, Mohammed I (852886), who ordered a fortress to be built on the left bank of the River Manzanares. It was
fought over by the Christian and Muslim kingdoms until it was finally conquered by Alfonso
VI for the Christians in the 11th century. At the end of the 17th century a wall was built to
protect the new suburbs, which ran along the lines now traced by the roads, Ronda de
Segovia, Ronda de Toledo and Ronda de Valencia.

The main thoroughfares of the city such as Paseo de la Castellana, Paseo de Recoletos,
Paseo de El Prado and Paseo de Las Acacias were built in the 18th century, under the
reign of Carlos III.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Joseph Bonaparte began the reform of the Puerta del
Sol and surrounding area. The Gran Vía was developed at the beginning of the 20th century.
The lengthening of the Paseo de la Castellana started in the 50's, when the modern highrises were built that today house some of the biggest world-class financial companies.
The oldest buildings still left standing are the baroque and neo-classical buildings such
as the Plaza Mayor and the Palacio Real.
Climate
Other information
The Community of Madrid has a continental climate with temperatures ranging from
0º C or lower in winter to temperatures of 40º C in the summer. The climate in the city
contrasts with the colder winters and cooler summers of the mountainous areas to the
north of the Community.

The average annual temperature is 14º C, rising from the chilly 5º C average in the coldest
months up to a warmer 25º C average in the summer months.
Rainfall varies a great deal but is generally scarce in the city. You will find few opportunities
to use an umbrella.

How to get to the city?
By plane:
Madrid Airport (Aeropuerto de Barajas) has flights to all the main capital cities in Europe
and many in the rest of the world. It has flight connections with cities in Spain.
• Barajas Airport is 13 kilometres from the city centre. Buses leave every ten
minutes for the airport on weekdays from the bus station at Avda. de América

“Aeropuerto” on line 8.

Atocha Station:
Atocha Station is located to the south of the city. It has train connections to Andalucia,
Extremadura and Portugal. It is the starting point for the AVE high-speed train and is the
capital's terminus for its local commuter trains. There is an underground railway tunnel
connecting it to Chamartín Station.

• The AVE is a high speed train that travels from Madrid to Seville in just two and
a half hours. It stops at Cordoba and Ciudad Real. There is also an AVE high
speed train between Madrid and Lleida, with stops in Guadalajara and Zaragoza;

Travelling in the city:
• The bus network is an ideal way of getting to know the city, but there are often
traffic jams in the city centre and around the tourist attractions.
In Madrid, you can buy tickets valid for both the Metro and the bus. These “bonos” for ten
journeys or monthly travel cards can be bought at Metro stations and newspaper stands.
You can also buy one-way or day-return tickets in the Metro stations when travelling.
