Tomada: “Today Argentina is recognized worldwide as
one of the countries which best defends human rights”
The Minister of Labour visited the Memory and Human Rights Space (former Naval School of
Mechanics-ESMA), together with around 100 youngsters between 18 and 24 years old
participating in the Programme Jóvenes con Más y Mejor Trabajo [Youngsters with More and
Better Jobs].
Tomada addressed the youngsters by assuring that “you have managed to turn this place into one
where we can feel good emotions”
Afterwards he warned that “one of the main purposes of the military dictatorship was to take away
from us one of the most valuable things we had, work; and in Argentina the two key reasons of
social improvement we had were education and work. They sought to create fear but we are no
longer afraid. We have recovered solidarity.”
Finally, the head of the labour portfolio said: “We want you to take from this place the certainty that
we are living another Argentina, with more solidarity and fairness. Today Argentina is recognized
worldwide as one of the countries which best defends human rights, the ones from yesterday,
today and forever.”
The purpose of the visit was to reflect on the importance of human rights and the active
participation of the citizenship in building more democratic societies, in the framework of the
meetings held in memory of 24 March 1976, when the last civic-military dictatorship was
established.
The Minister was accompanied by the Secretary of Employment, Enrique Deibe; the Nation’s
Secretary of Human Rights, Martín Fresneda; the Undersecretary of Promotion of the Economy
Social Sector, Federico Ludueña; the Coordinator of the Programme Jóvenes, Juan Miguel
Gómez; and the representative of the Memory and Human Rights Space, Carlos Pisoni.
