Library Snapshot Day Toolkit - Massachusetts Board of Library

Tool Kit Contents
This Tool Kit contains materials to help you
encourage patrons to participate in Snapshot Day
at your library. We’ve designed the materials for ease
of use. They can be printed on regular printers in the
library, or be sent out for printing. The news release can
be altered to reflect the activities happening in your
library and the photo release will allow patron photos
to be used in statewide publications. We hope that
these materials are helpful to you as Massachusetts
joins libraries across the nation to capture a day in the
life of libraries.

Promoting Massachusetts Library Snapshot Day
Staff awareness:
Make sure all library staff are aware of the library’s plan for Snapshot Day so that if a patron asks they’ll
know how to answer.
Let your regular patrons know:
• Place Snapshot Day mini-posters (Provided in Spanish and English in the Tool Kit) at check-outs, on library doors, and around the library • Place Snapshot Day bookmarks (provided in Spanish and English in the Tool Kit)
in patron’s books
• Mention Snapshot Day at all library events and programs
Let the general community know:
Send news release (provided in Tool Kit) to local newspapers
Give everyone who comes into the library “Library Snapshot Day 2011—I was there” sticker (provided in Tool Kit for use with Avery labels 5294)
Invite local VIPs
Make sure to invite VIPs in your community, including authors, mayor, city councilors, police chief,
school superintendent, sports teams, etc. Make sure you have something for them to do if they do
attend. Take pictures of them in the library.
Use social media if you have it:
Be sure to announce Snapshot Day on the library’s Facebook page and have someone tweet or flash
mob during the day.
Photo releases:
Make sure everyone who participates signs a photo release form (provided in Tool Kit). It’s important
that you use the one provided in the Tool Kit so the photo can be used in statewide publications.
Report your data:
Upload photos on Flickr and be sure to fill out the data collection survey.

Join us and be counted!
On Wednesday, April 13, Massachusetts libraries will join libraries across the nation to provide a snapshot of what
happens in the day in the life of libraries. How many books are checked out? How many people receive help finding
a job? Doing their taxes? Doing their homework? During Snapshot Day libraries will collect data and photos that
help demonstrate the value of libraries and raise public awareness that libraries are busier than ever. Stop by and be
counted!

One Day in the Life of Massachusetts Libraries
Sponsored by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, Massachusetts Library
System, Massachusetts Library Association, the Massachusetts School Library Association
and your local library.
