T he Pastor’s Corner
My dear Parishioners,
For some years now, on this weekend as we celebrate Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. with a holiday, I have made it a
point to read “A Letter from Birmingham Jail,” his masterful response to the criticism of eight white members of the
clergy (no Catholics among them) of his involvement as a
minister in the Civil Rights movement, specifically in Birmingham, Alabama in the spring of 1963. From the beginning, it has been acclaimed both as a great piece of literature
and, more importantly, as one of the most powerful instruments in bringing about a turning point in the Civil Rights
movement. Despite the fact that Dr. King described Birmingham in his letter as “the most thoroughly segregated
city in the United States” where “negroes have experienced
grossly unjust treatment in the courts” and had “more unsolved bombings of negro homes and churches,” he chose
the path of peaceful non-violence rather than retaliatory violence.

In his letter, Dr. King called for a society—a country—
characterized by inclusivity, interculturality and non-violent
love, a nation where all could live in harmony and peace
with one another. “Every person is sacred, unique, dignified, and loved by God and thus must be fully and meaningfully incorporated into the human society,” he said. His
was and still is a great prophetic voice whose message is as
urgent and needed today as it was fifty-three years ago.

Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario/C
Hemos dejado atrás el Tiempo Navidad. Con todo, la liturgia de este Domingo continua desarrollando el misterio de la manifestación del
Señor que celebrábamos hace pocos días. La imagen de la bodas de Cana del evangelio es considerada, según una tradición antigua, una
epifanía, junto con el bautismo de Jesús en el rio Jordán y la adoración de los magos. Comprobamos como estos tres “Milagros” quedan
entrelazados armónicamente en la antífona del Benedictus del mismo día seis de Enero: “ Hoy la Iglesia se ha unido a su celestial Esposo,
porque , en el Jordán, Cristo la purifica de sus pecados, los Magos acuden con sus regalos a las bodas del Rey, y los invitados se alegran por
el agua convertida en vino”. No es aventurado afirmar por tanto que, en todos los Domingos celebramos el misterio de la Epifanía del Señor, es decir, el encuentro jubiloso entre el Esposo divino y su esposa, la Iglesia. La alegría de ésta en el encuentro nupcial queda bien patente tanto en el evangelio como en la lectura del profeta Isaias.
En el Año de la Misericordia iremos compartiendo algunas reflexiones sobre las OBRAS DE MISERICORDIA que nos propone el Equipo
Pastoral Liturgico de Barcelona, España.
Obras de Misericordia Espirituales
 ‘Consolar al triste’.
Santa Maria, Madre del Consuelo de los afligidos.
He valorado comenzar con una obra de Misericordia espiritual como es Consolar a los afligidos, con Maria Madre de Dios y madre nuestra,
porque es a ella a quien pedimos consuelo muchas veces, y nos ponemos bajo su protección con las diferentes advocaciones con las que la
veneramos. También porque este Jubileo extraordinario de la Misericordia se inició el 8 de Diciembre pasado, fiesta importante de Maria
como es la Inmaculada Concepción. Decía en la presentación que el tema de este Año Santo de la Misericordia es: “Misericordiosos como
el Padre es misericordioso”. También de ella podemos decir “Misericordiosos como Maria es misericordiosa”.
Santa Maria recibe el nombre “ Madre del Consuelo” o “Consoladora de los afligidos”, porque por medio de ella Dios envió el “consuelo
de su pueblo”, que es Jesucristo. Maria, cuando estuvo junto a su Hijo en la cruz, mereció esta felicidad prometida por el Evangelio:
“Felices los que lloran, porque serán consolados”. Después de la resurrección de su hijo Jesucristo, recibió este consuelo, y por ello
puede consolar a sus hijos en cualquier lucha. Maria, protagonista de la salvación, responde con un si valiente a Dios y canta el Magnificat a
favor de los más pobres. Es la madre que sufre al pie de la Cruz de su Hijo y consuela cuando los discípulos desesperan después de la muerte de Jesús. Maria mantiene viva la llama de la fe, preparándose para acoger el anuncio gozoso de la Resurrección. Maria nos puede ayudar
a poner en práctica esta obra de Misericordia, porque llevó en su seno al propio Hijo de Dios, que es fuente de Misericordia. Que estas reflexiones nos ayuden a ir profundizando en este misterio de la Misericordia de Dios.
