Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Rey del Universo
Growing up in the 1980’s us kids
watched a cartoon called He-man. He-man, a
very muscled action hero, was called the
Master of the Universe and got all his power
from a sword. The scriptures tell us today that
Jesus Christ is the real Master of the Universe.
Not every one recognizes this proclamation of our faith. Even during his earthly
ministry on the way to the cross people did not
believe. For example, Pontius Pilate asked
Jesus if he is the King of the Jews and Jesus
responds: “My kingdom does not belong to this
world.” Later the soldiers mock the Lord by
putting a crown of thorns on his head. Later
above his head on the cross Pilate makes the
proclamation with the sign: Iesus Nazarenus
Rex Iudaeorum (INRI), which states that Jesus
of Nazareth is King of the Jews! And when
asked to change the statement he refused! He
knew something unique was happening. What
was happening? Jesus Our King was coming
into his true kingdom: the kingdom of heaven.
Now we proclaim “The Lord is king; he
is robed in majesty!” and “His dominion is an
everlasting dominion that shall not be taken
away, his kingship shall not be destroyed.” We
say this in faith that Jesus, ruling our hearts
from heaven, is the real Master of the Universe.
Crecer en el año1980, de niños nosotros
veíamos un dibujo animado llamado He-man.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
Demonstrate your Thankfulness
this season
Blood Drive Saturday December 5th in the
fellowship from 9:00am—2:00pm sign up after every mass or call
Each holiday season, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton anticipates and relies on a seasonal increase in contributions. It is through the donations of every individual
and family in the congregation that we are able to carry on our work now and throughout the year.
If you need a convenient way to make recurring contributions or plan to make an additional gift before the
end of the year, we encourage you to check out our
electronic giving options. As the pace of life speeds
up around the holidays, you may find electronic giving a most welcome way to make contributions.
To set up a recurring giving schedule, visit us online
at www.seas-aloha.org and locate the Online Giving
button. Or if it's easier, complete a paper authorization form and return it to the church office.
Thank you for your generosity and support!

RE NEWS
Beginning the Church's liturgical year, Advent (from, "ad-venire" in Latin or "to
come to") is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the
celebration of Christmas.
The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds
to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s
birth on Christmas. The final days of Advent, from December 17 to December 24, focus
particularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of our Lord
(Christmas).
Advent devotions including the Advent wreath, remind us of the meaning of the
season. Traditionally, Advent wreaths are constructed of a circle of evergreen branches
into which four candles are inserted, representing the four weeks of Advent. Ideally, three
candles are purple/blue and one is rose, but white candles can also be used.
The purple candles in particular symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory
sacrifices and goods works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third
Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete
Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at
the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over and
they are close to Christmas.
The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and
the anticipation of his second coming to judge the living and the dead.

Advent
The word Advent is from the Latin adventus for "coming" and is associated with the
four weeks of preparation for Christmas. Advent always contains four Sundays, beginning on
the Sunday nearest the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, (November 30) and continuing until
December 24. It blends together a penitential spirit, very similar to Lent, a liturgical theme of
preparation for the Second and Final Coming of the Lord, called the Parousia, and a joyful
theme of getting ready for the Bethlehem event.
Since the 900s Advent has been considered the beginning of the Church year. This does not
mean that Advent is the most important time of the year. Easter has always had this honor.
The traditional color of Advent is purple or violet which symbolizes the penitential spirit.
Religious traditions associated with Advent express all these themes.
Advent Wreath
"Customarily the Advent Wreath is constructed of a circle of evergreen branches into
which are inserted four candles (advent candles). According to tradition,
three of the candles are violet/blue and the fourth is rose. However, four
violet or white candles (advent candles) may also be used" (Book of
Blessings 1510).
The rose candle is lit the third Sunday of Advent, for this color
anticipates and symbolizes the Christmas joy announced in the first
word of the Entrance Antiphon: "Rejoice" (Latin, Gaudete). For this
reason the Third Sunday is also called Gaudete Sunday, and rose color
vestments are permitted.
The Advent Wreath represents the long time when people lived in spiritual darkness,
waiting for the coming of the Messiah, the Light of the world. Each year in Advent people
wait once again in darkness for the coming of the Lord, His historical coming in the mystery
of Bethlehem, His final coming at the end of time, and His special coming in every moment of
grace.
During Advent, family and friends can gather around the Advent Wreath lighting the
appropriate candle(s), read from the daily Advent meditation and sing songs. The Church's
official Book of Blessings also provides a blessing ceremony for the advent wreath which can
be used in the absence of a priest.
Advent Calendar
A personal calendar can be made for the four weeks before Christmas. On the calendar, a
person can mark the Advent Calendar with personal goals of preparation or acts of service to
be done for others.
Advent House
Jesse Tree
During Advent, biblical persons representing the ancestors of Jesus, either in faith or
bloodline, are gradually added onto a tree or branch, named after the father of David.
The symbols such as Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Jesse, David, Solomon,
Joseph and Mary can be drawn, cut out or purchased.
