Remember that when your child is telling his/her story, we encourage them to use complete sentences and record their words using beginning and ending sounds, spaces and ending punctuation. In Reading, we are working on using information from pictures to read and understand a story and to identify unknown words. We are also using the pictures and text to confirm predictions. Another focus is using text features to identify a book as fiction or nonfiction. In math we are working on patterns. Please encourage your child to work beyond simple patterns (ABAB) and to try to recognize and create more complex patterns (ABCABC or ABCCABCC). Just a reminder… as it gets colder, we will still be going outside, so please make sure your child wears warm clothes. Don’t forget to write your child’s name on all clothing items. 1st Grade First graders will be the experts in non-fiction writing this quarter. We “teach” others as we write interesting facts and information that tell all about our favorite topics. We continue to work on reading and writing high frequency words and retelling a book as we identify the main topic and add key details. In math, we finished our study of geometry and are moving on to story problems with addition and subtraction. Students are discovering the many combinations of numbers up to 15 and memorizing doubles such as 4+4 and 5+5. 2nd Grade This quarter 2nd grade will be connecting our science unit with our writing unit. Students will be learning how to write informational writing by writing lab reports based on a lesson they conduct during science time. They will be writing like scientists!! This year our first science unit will be Balance and Motion. We are learning to understand “changes in speed or direction of motion are caused by forces such as pushes and pulls,” per Colorado Standard PS.2.1. In math we continue to focus on strategies that support students while solving addition and subtraction story problems up to 100. We will also be describing and analyzing shapes. In reading this quarter, we will continue to discuss author’s purpose, and understand what the story is teaching us/telling us by asking and answering questions while reading. We have 2 suggestions for reading practice online: www.starfall.com and www.abcya.com 3rd Grade Thank you to everyone who attended conferences last month. We enjoyed meeting with our students and their families and discussing ways we can work together. Second quarter is beginning with high expectations. In writing we are finishing up our genre unit writing personal narratives and we will soon be learning how to use research to write reports. During reading we are working on our comprehension strategies and focusing on the importance of returning to the text to justify our answers. In math, we are learning all about fractions. We are dividing groups into equal parts and naming the parts as fractions. We are looking forward to our upcoming field trip to the Wildlife Experience. We also hope to see many of our third grade families at the turkey trot! Please continue reading with your child at home and talking with them about what they are learning at school. 4th Grade With much learning behind us and many holidays in front of us the school year continues at a fast pace. Fourth graders will continue their work with fractions, and they will also begin to work with decimals. During this busy month include your student in measuring of all kinds, especially in the kitchen or with decorative projects. They can also continue to practice their basic multiplication facts. In writing we will be working on an opinion piece. When reading each evening you can be asking your student what in their reading is important to remember and why that information is most important. They should be identifying specific details. Please help your student to develop good habits with their reading homework routines. 5th Grade 5th Grade As the weather chills, fifth grade is turning up the heat. We are learning about fractions, decimals, and percents. This is the most challenging unit in the fifth grade math curriculum. Be sure to ask your kids about how we use this math in our everyday lives. In writing, we are looking through the lens of history as we begin writing research projects. In reading, we are identifying the main idea of a text and determining supporting details in order to create a thorough summary. Our Social Studies unit focuses on how the colonists built a new nation. Additionally, this quarter we will use the scientific method to investigate a variety of landforms and how they were formed. The fifth grade team would like to wish you and your family a happy and delicious Thanksgiving. DLC - Diverse Learning Classrooms – Ms. Angela and Ms. Nelson Welcome back from Fall Break! Our monthly theme for November is all about the weather. We will go beyond just talking about the seasons and discuss weather elements such as the sun, clouds, snow, rain, wind, tornadoes, and how to dress appropriately for the different elements. This quarter, DLC will trial a new instructional model by grouping students by ability level from both DLC classrooms during academic blocks. This will allow for more appropriate instruction at your child's individual ability level and allow students to work with both teachers, Ms. Angela and Ms. Nelson during academic blocks. Look for information coming home about the next walking field trip. We strive every day to minimize the spread of germs in our classrooms, but with cold and flu season upon us, please help us by reviewing the "General Guidelines for Keeping Children Home Due to Illness" that was sent home in October. As always, students are working hard at building social relationships and increasing self-direction and independence toward academic and daily living tasks! Music Notes Mrs. Gonzalez, Music Specialist 5th grade students will be performing a grade level music program on Thursday, November 13th, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. in the gymnasium at Vassar Elementary School. The title of their performance is “Tom Sawyer and Company.” Students have been learning about one of America’s famous authors and one of his well-known stories. 3rd grade students will be performing a grade level music program on Thursday, November 20st, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. in the gymnasium at Vassar Elementary School. The title of their performance is “Character Street.” Please mark your calendars! Visual Arts are important to children. Teacher 3rd – 5th We have been working on hand/eye coordination as we are learning the basic skills in basketball in the month of September. Students will also be working on foot/eye coordination through a series of soccer drills that we are also working on throughout October. We will be using these skills in small sided games and activities. Students have also been talking about the circulatory system (how the heart helps the body), respiratory system (how lungs function and the importance of oxygen), muscular system (allows us to move), and the skeletal system (gives our structure and protects vital organs). Please have conversations with your children about these body systems for better comprehension. The Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students have been focusing on different types of movements (walking, jogging, skipping, galloping, hopping, sliding) etc. 1st and 2nd graders have been also working on these movements backwards. We will be working on hand/eye coordination drills such as catching / throwing. So far students have been doing team building activities (parachute), and have been working on rolling and tossing. It’s important for students to step with the correct (opposite) foot as they transfer their weight from their back foot to their front foot while throwing, tossing and rolling. We will be using these throwing and catching skills in many small sided games and activities throughout the year. Remember, NO open toed shoes, sandals or boots in physical education class. If it is snowy outside, have them bring a pair of athletic shoes that they can change into when they go to PE. 5th Gear Kids (5th Graders Only) 5th Gear Kids is an energy balance program geared for 5th graders to learn about healthy food choices and exercise. This is an opportunity for the 5th graders and family members to earn points by making healthy choices in the community. There are several sponsors that participate in the program. Nick Chapla Physical Education Vassar Elementary Flu season is just around the corner in Colorado! There is no way to predict in advance how severe flu activity will be so prevention is the best strategy to stay healthy. The single best way to avoid getting influenza is to get vaccinated each year. Annual influenza vaccination is recommended for all persons aged 6 months and older, who do not have a contraindication to the vaccine. Most health insurance companies (including Medicaid) cover the cost of getting a flu vaccine so families with health insurance can go to your in-network health care provider to receive a vaccine at no cost. Many pharmacies will bill your insurance and not charge a fee for flu vaccine (check with your local pharmacy). If you are uninsured, or your insurance won’t cover vaccines, or you have Medicaid or Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+), you can call Tri-County Health Department at 303-451-0123 to be vaccinated in one of their clinics. You can also visit http://flushot.healthmap.org/ to find flu shot clinics near you. It’s COLD outside! Dress warm! Students will be expected to go outside for recess each day if the temperature is above 20 degrees, therefore, students should wear coats, hats and gloves to school during the winter season. On days when the temperature is below 20 degrees or if there is precipitation, the students will have inside recess and be supervised by paraprofessionals in their classrooms. Note: Students well enough to be in school are expected to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess. Please do not ask for your student to stay inside unless you have a doctor’s note. The clinic is very busy with medication and injuries during lunch time and the front office cannot conduct business and supervise students during this time. Estamos tan emocionados y listos para escuchar tus aventuras. Recuerden que cuando su hijo está contando su historia, les animamos a utilizar frases completas y grabar sus palabras utilizando el inicio y final de los sonidos, espacios y puntuación final. En la lectura, estamos trabajando sobre el uso de la información de imágenes para leer y comprender una historia e identificar palabras desconocidas. También estamos utilizando las fotos y el texto para confirmar las predicciones. Otro enfoque es utilizar las características del texto para identificar un libro como ficción o no ficción. En matemáticas estamos trabajando sobre los patrones. Por favor anime a su hijo a trabajar más allá de patrones simples (ABAB) y tratar de reconocer y crear patrones más complejos (ABCABC o ABCCABCC). Sólo un recordatorio... aun cuando hace más frío, los alumnos irán afuera, así que por favor asegúrese que su niño use ropa abrigada. "Enseñamos" a otros como escribimos interesantes hechos e información que dice todo acerca de nuestros temas favoritos. Continuamos trabajando para leer y escribir palabras de alta frecuencia y contar de un libro como identificar el tema principal y añadir detalles claves. En matemáticas, hemos terminado nuestro estudio de la geometría y estamos pasando a los problemas de la historia con sumas y restas. Los estudiantes están descubriendo muchas combinaciones de números hasta 15 y memorizando dobles como 4 + 4 y 5 + 5. 2 º grado Este trimestre 2do grado conectará la unidad de ciencia con la unidad de escritura. Este año será nuestra primera unidad de ciencia de equilibrio y movimiento. En matemáticas continuamos centrándonos en estrategias de apoyo a los estudiantes al intentar resolver problemas de suma y resta de historia hasta 100. Cuarto grado continuará su trabajo con fracciones, y también comenzará a trabajar con decimales. Durante este mes de trabajo el estudiante incluye todo tipo de mediciones, especialmente en la cocina o con proyectos de decoración. También pueden seguir practicando las tablas de multiplicación. En la escritura trabajaremos en un artículo de opinión. Al leer cada noche usted puede preguntar a su estudiante acerca de su lectura, ¿qué es importante recordar y por qué esa información es más importante. Ellos deben de identificar los detalles específicos. Por favor ayude a su estudiante a desarrollar buenos hábitos con sus tareas con una rutina de lectura . 5 º grado se encuentra estudiando acerca de las fracciones, decimales y porcentajes. Esta es la unidad más desafiante en el currículo de matemáticas de grado quinto. Asegúrese de preguntarle a sus hijos acerca de cómo usamos esta matemática en nuestra vida cotidiana. En la escritura, estamos buscando a través del lente de la historia ya que comenzamos a escribir proyectos de investigación. En la lectura, estamos identificando la idea principal de un texto y determinando los detalles de apoyo con el fin de crear un resumen exhaustivo. Nuestra unidad de estudios sociales se centra en cómo los colonos construyeron una nueva nación. Además, este trimestre utilizaremos el método científico para investigar una gran variedad de accidentes geográficos y cómo fueron formados. Este trimestre, DLC estará probando un nuevo modelo de enseñanza al agrupar alumnos con nivel de habilidad de ambos salones DLC durante espacios académicos. Esto permitirá la instrucción más adecuada al nivel de habilidad individual de su niño y permite a los estudiantes a trabajar con dos profesores, la Sra. Angela y la Sra.
