Dear sisters and brothers,
I want to share with you some exciting news about youth ministry at St. Lawrence.
As you may know, since Neil Kennedy’s responsibilities were directed to adult faith formation
in July of 2013, the position of full-time youth minster has been vacant. I want to offer a very
special thank you to Andy Gotsch who while teaching full-time at Tampa Catholic High School
generously offered to serve as our interim part-time youth minister until such time as we
were able to fill our full-time position. He’s become the glue that has enabled us to provide
for the ministerial needs of our high school teens during these past three years. I am grateful
for all of his time and hard work in guiding our young people closer to Christ. Andy will
continue to participate this summer in the Covecrest retreat experience and the Diocesan
Good Samaritan program.
At this time, I am grateful to introduce our new full-time Director of Youth Ministry for the
parish, Chris McBride, who will begin his ministry on Thursday, June 9, 2016. I am excited to
have Chris join our team at St. Lawrence, especially with his experience of serving a vibrant
youth ministry program at Light of Christ parish in Clearwater these past four years.
As the Director of Youth Ministry for St. Lawrence, Chris will be responsible for high school
youth ministry in all aspects including youth Confirmation sacramental prep. He will be the
coordinator of our Covecrest expeditions and other retreat opportunities. He’ll serve as our
liaison and be a parish presence in our local Catholic and public high schools. Additionally,
Chris will assist Sarah Williford, the director of our middle school Edge Program in helping to
provide a smooth transition for our young people into high school ministry as they graduate
8th grade.
Please join me in welcoming Chris to our staff as you meet him in the weeks ahead.

Welcome to St. Lawrence
Director of Youth Ministry
Growing up in St. Petersburg, FL, Chris
always felt a strong calling to serve. An
active member of the Boy Scouts, he
attended St. Petersburg Catholic High
School, where he completed his Scouts
activities and earned the honor of Eagle
Scout. During this time, he also traveled
to China, where he received his black
belt in mixed martial arts.
Towards the end of his high school
career, he began discerning the
priesthood. After spending three years in
the seminary, he discerned in prayer that
God’s call was to a different vocation. He
went on to graduate with a Bachelor’s
degree in Philosophy from the University
of Steubenville in 2012 and began his
professional journey as the Youth
Minister at Light of Christ Catholic
Church in Clearwater.
Looking for a new opportunity to serve,
Chris is excited to join the community at
St. Lawrence and hopes to bring an
enthusiasm about God to the young
people and families of our parish.
We thank Andy Gotsch for his three
years of ministry here at St. Lawrence
as interim Youth Minister. Andy has
been instrumental in developing and
promoting our Youth Group meetings held on Sundays.
In addition, Andy has provided many other activities,
including retreats for our youth receiving the Sacrament
of Confirmation and evenings such as Rock the Universe
and Night of Joy. He has also organized our annual High
School Graduates Recognition Mass and reception. Most
importantly, Andy has lead over 75 of our high school
teens and chaperones on our summer Covecrest trips in
Atlanta, opportunities that have changed the lives of
many of those attending. All of this while working full
time as a teacher at Tampa Catholic High School. Andy
has recently accepted a position as Campus Minister and
head of the Theology Department at Bishop McLaughlin
Catholic High School in Spring Hill, Florida. We ask for
God’s blessings on Andy as he begins on August 1st his
new position at Bishop McLaughlin and once again we
thank him for his faithful ministry at St. Lawrence!
Welcome
Zach Brasseur a college seminarian for
our diocese is living and working here
at St. Lawrence; he has completed his
first year of seminary formation at St.
John Vianney College Seminary in Miami. He was born and
raised in St. Petersburg, grew up at St. Paul’s Catholic Church
and graduated from St. Petersburg High School. Before going
to seminary he earned a bachelor’s degree in history from
Saint Leo University. Zach began feeling a call to the
priesthood when he was seven or eight years old, but he
wasn’t ready to pursue his vocation more diligently until he
was finished with college. He is very excited to be here at St.
Lawrence and looks forward to being involved in the day-today activities of parish life. Thank you so much for helping him
to feel welcome! It is quite an honor and responsibility to be
asked to be part of the parish community and his formation.

TABERNACLE
RESTORATION
PROJECT
You may have noticed
that we have a different
tabernacle in the
sanctuary this weekend.
We recently shipped our
tabernacle to a company
in Tulsa, Oklahoma so
that it may be restored. Over the years, the
metal has worn down, become scratched and
the inside silk lining has become stained and
worn. In gratitude to an anonymous donor, in
about four weeks, we will have a tabernacle
that will be completed restored to new.

Quiero compartir con ustedes algunas noticias interesantes sobre el ministerio
de jóvenes en San Lorenzo.
Como ya sabrá, ya que las responsabilidades de Neil Kennedy se dirigieron a la fe de adultos en julio de
2013, la posición de la iglesia de ministro de jóvenes ha estado vacante. Quiero ofrecer un
agradecimiento muy especial a Andy Gotsch que mientras que esta plaza estava vacante y mientras el
trabajabo como maestr en Tampa Catholic High School generosamente ofrecio sus servicios como
nuestro líder de jóvenes a provisionalmente hasta este momento en que hemos sido capaces de llenar
nuestra posición. Andy se convertio en el pegamento que nos ha permitido proveer a las necesidades
ministeriales de nuestros adolescentes de secundaria durante estos últimos tres años. Estoy muy

Creciendo en San Petersburgo, FL, Chris
siempre sintió una fuerte vocación de
servicio. Fue un miembro activo de los
Boy Scouts, asistió a
St. Petersburg Catholic High School,
donde completó sus actividades de Scouts

Durante este tiempo, también viajó a
China, donde recibió su cinturón negro en

Agradecemos a Andy Gotsch por sus tres
años de ministerio aquí en San Lorenzo,
ministro provisional de la juventud. Andy
ha sido fundamental en el desarrollo y la
promoción de nuestras reuniones de
jóvenes en los domingos.
Además, Andy ha proporcionado muchas otras actividades,
incluyendo retiros para nuestra juventud preparandose a
recibir el Sacramento de la Confirmación y actividades como
Rock Universo y la Noche de la Alegría. También ha
organizado nuestra anual Misa para los Graduados y la y la
recepción. Lo más importante, Andy ha llevado más de 75 de
nuestros adolescentes de secundaria y acompañantes en
nuestro verano Covecrest viajes en Atlanta, oportunidades
que han cambiado la vida de muchos de los asistentes.
Todo esto mientras trabajaba como maestro en Tampa
Catholic High School. Andy ha aceptado recientemente una
posición como Ministro de Campus y jefe del departamento
de Teología en la High School Bishop McLaughlin en Spring
Hill, Florida. Pedimos bendiciones a Dios sobre Andy
mientras comienza el 1 de agosto su nueva posición en
Bishop McLaughlin y una vez más le agradecemos por su fiel
ministerio en San Lorenzo!

Zach Brasseur seminarista universitario de
nuestra diócesis está viviendo y
trabajando aquí, en San Lorenzo; ahora
que cumplio su primer año de formación
en el Seminario de San Juan Vianney en Miami.
Zach nació y se crió en San Petersburgo, se crió en la iglesia católica
de St. Paul y se graduó de la Escuela Secundaria de St. Petersburgo.
Antes de ir al seminario obtuvo una licenciatura en Historia en la
Universidad de Saint Leo.
Zach comenzó a sentir una llamada al sacerdocio cuando tenía siete u
ocho años de edad, pero que no estaba listo para dedicarse a su
vocación más diligentemente hasta que terminó con la universidad.
Él está muy emocionado de estar aquí en San Lorenzo y espera con
entusiasmo participar en las actividades del día a día de la vida
parroquial. Muchas Gracias por ayudar a que se sienta bienvenido! Es
un gran honor y responsabilidad que se le pida que sea parte de la
comunidad parroquial y su Formación.

Dios todopoderoso y eterno, Pastor que guías a tu
pueblo. Te damos gracias por habernos concedido al
Monseñor Roberto Lynch como obispo nuestro durante
los últimos veinte años.
Confiados en tu amor durante este tiempo de transición,
creemos que, una vez más, darás a la Diócesis de St.
Petersburg un pastor que nos inspire a ser el corazón
misericordioso de Cristo, su voz de esperanza y sus
manos de justicia.

Papa Francisco: La oración es la batería que hace
funcionar al cristiano
Durante la Misa matutina en la Casa Santa Marta, el Papa Francisco habló de la oración y de los dones que
cada cristiano recibe y deben ser puestos a disposición de los demás y no guardarlos para uno mismo.
“Cuántas obras se convierten en oscuras por falta de luz, por falta de oración. Lo que mantiene, lo que da vida
a la luz cristiana, lo que ilumina es la oración”, dijo.
El Santo Padre recordó que el cristiano está llamado a ser luz y sal para los demás, pero, "¿cuáles son las
baterías del cristiano para ser luz? Simplemente la oración”, indicó. “Puedes hacer muchas cosas, muchas
obras, muchas obras de misericordia, muchas cosas grandes por la Iglesia –una universidad católica, un
colegio, un hospital– y también te harán un monumento de benefactor de la Iglesia, pero si no oras eso estará
un poco oscuro”.
Se trata por tanto de “la oración de adoración al Padre, de alabanza a la Trinidad, la oración de
agradecimiento, también la de pedir las cosas al Señor, pero la oración del corazón”. Esto es “el aceite, las
baterías, que dan vida a la luz”.
Respecto a la sal, el Pontífice explicó que “se convierte en sal cuando se da, y esta es otra actitud del cristiano:
darse; salar la vida de los otros, dar sabor a tantas cosas con el mensaje del Evangelio”.
Es “darse, no guardárselo para uno mismo. La sal no es para el cristiano, es para darla. La tiene el cristiano
para darla, es sal para darse, pero no para uno mismo”. En definitiva, “la sal y la luz son para los demás. La
luz no se ilumina a sí misma, la sal no se da sabor a sí misma”.
Estos dones “no terminan nunca” porque “una cosa dada como un don continúa siendo dada como don si uno
la da, iluminando y dando”.
El Papa invitó: “ilumina con tu luz, pero defiéndete de la tentación de iluminarte a ti mismo. Esto es feo, es un
poco la espiritualidad del espejo: me ilumino a mí mismo. Defiéndete de esta tentación. Se luz para iluminar,
se sal para dar sabor y conservar”.
“Que el Señor nos ayude en esto, a cuidar siempre de la luz, a no esconderla, a ponerla en lo
alto”. Y la sal, “a dar la justa, lo que sea necesario, pero a darla”. “Estas son las buenas obras
del cristiano”, aseguró. Evangelio comentado por el Papa:
