Lent is upon us, a time of prayer and fasting, in preparation for Easter. It started with Ashes (last
Wednesday) as a reminder of our mortality (ashes to ashes, dust to dust) but not without hope of
resurrection (for ashes are the purified remains that have withstood the fire without being destroyed)!
Let's take a little look at prayer and fasting this Lent in the Pastor's Keyboard.
Prayer, I was taught at St Joseph Grade School in the 1950's, is the lifting of mind and heart to
God ... There's lifting, movement, ad infinitum, of a mind that seeks to perceive what is knowable
and to understand what is perceived, and of a will that seeks by love to bring what is merely possible
into being actual, including and excluding, in bite-size steps, along the way in Time toward Eternity
(which is the infinite simultaneous possession of all possible perfection, the "what" that constitutes
God in himself). Countering the downward "gravity" of "sin" by removing obstacles to the upward
"gravity" of "grace" (Simone Weil), the prayer-filled soul lives like a dart aimed at the Father to realize
within us the two eternal processions of Son and Spirit ("to" the Father, "through" the Son, "in" the
Spirit).

The "negative" moment ("-") of Contrition reflects sadness and detestation for sin, reversing course in hope toward a different future: Contrition is the more striking in proportion as we are
aware of God's infinite majesty, perfection, transcendence, and yet loving and forgiving providence
toward us (to know God's mercy is to sense his energy and desire toward our betterment, our salvation, our fulfillment in heaven, in a state stronger than death); and the moment ("-") of Supplication
reflects looking, with confidence, to God, to help us in our need, and is all the more confident in proportion as there is awareness of past blessings (articulated in Thanksgiving).
Let us remember that "just thinking about God" is not "prayer," but rather there must be a
"lifting," i.e., a "movement" of "mind" and "heart" toward "God" (like that of transition from member to
member within an infinite series toward its limit), whose term is a union of mind and will with God, to
know and love what God does, to be "godly," to become "transformed" into the perfect image of his
beloved Son in the Spirit, as members of the "Total Christ." The closer we come to the Light ("+"), the
more the Shadows ("-") stand out. But as St Paul says, "Where sin has abounded, there has grace all
the more abounded." No sin whose disaster is too tough for God to turn around, with our cooperation.
Adoration: Any prayer naming God's unique infinite attributes in himself and identifying
his worthiness for our worship (very prominent in Eastern Liturgies). Its style – "We bless and adore
and praise and worship Thee, O Eternal, Wondrous, Ineffable, Incomprehensible, All-Knowing, AllPowerful, All-Loving, and Infinitely Perfect and Most Blessed Trinity, and we bow prostrate before
Thee, and honor Thee above all, and beyond all, Thou who art without comparison or equal or judge
in all the universe, and in all that has been, is, and will be. Amen. Amen." Whew!
Thanksgiving: Typical salvation-history recital (such as – "He delivered them from pharaoh (his mercy endures forever), and led them through the sea (his mercy endures forever), and fed
them with manna in the desert (his mercy endures forever) ..."). Cfr. Ps 105, 107, 116-118, 136 or
Dan 3:52-90. It's good to be able to pray, seeing our blessings and salvation history as today's version of scripture's: e.g., "O God, I have been blessed with X from you, as was your servant Moses."

Information for St. Joseph Parish
FOR YOUR INFORMATON ON FASTING AND ABSTINENCE: All Catholics 14 years and older must abstain
from meat on the Fridays of Lent, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. All Catholics ages from 18th birthday through
60th birthday are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. To fast means to eat one full meal: the other
two meals that day should be less than normal amount unless they are already at a minimum for good health. Eating
between meals is not permitted; however, liquids including coffee, milk and fruit juices are allowed.

Prayer Shawl Ministry next meeting is Friday, Feb. 19 at 10: 00am in the Parish Center. Please join us!

Join us for the 4th Year Anniversary Celebration of the Dedication of Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto,
Thursday, February 25th after the 12:05 Mass. There will be a blessing of the Grotto, Rosary Procession
around the St. Joseph Campus and refreshments following in the cafeteria.

Come join our Lord in this beautiful and peaceful place. Our Adoration Chapel is located on the
south side of the Church off of Chemeketa Street. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We
welcome parishioners to take a regular chapel hour or begin as a substitute until you find an hour
that works best for you.

traer despensa - para los pobres y
necesitados de nuestra comunidad de
Salem. Puede traer papas, manzanas,
aceite, frijoles, arroz, comida y fruta
enlatada, cereales, etc.

AYUNOS Y ABSTINENCIAS
La abstinencia obliga todos los Católicos mayores de 14
años deben abstenerse de carne los viernes de cuaresma, el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo.
El ayuno obliga todos los Católicos de 18 a 59 años de
edad se requiere ayunar el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. Ayunar significa comer solo una comida entera; las otras dos comidas del día deben ser menos de la
cantidad normal. El comer entre comidas no es permitido;
sin embargo, tomar líquidos como café, leche, y jugos de
frutas si se pueden tomar.

tiempo de Cuaresma. NO traer flores a
ninguno de los santos o imágenes ya que
serán removidas.
AVISO COMUNITARIO
Hemos visto que durante varios fines de semana hay personas antes y después de la Misa
recolectando dinero ya sea para alguien que
falleció o por que no tienen trabajo. Se les notifica que estas personas no tienen el permiso del
párroco para recolectar dinero afuera o en los
alrededores de la parroquia.
Nos hemos enterado que las personas no están
realmente en necesidad.
QUE ESTA PIEDA SE CONVIERTA EN PAN
Muchos de nosotros ya habíamos tenido la idea “luminosa”
antes de leer el evangelio de hoy…
❅ Que esta piedra se nos convierta en pan…
❅ Que esta vivienda se nos convierta en una residencia…
❅ Que esta carcachita se nos convierta en un ultimo modelo…
❅ Que estos trapitos se nos
conviertan en ropa buena…
❅ Que estas baratijas se nos
conviertan en joyas…
❅ Que…
− Y no es que este mal que nos preocupamos por mejorar
nuestra situación económica y progresar.
− Lo malo esta en que solo nos preocupamos de esto.
− Y lo peor, que por agenciarnos todo lo enumerado, nos olvidamos de Dios y de los demás, cuando no es que pasamos
sobre el primero y nos aprovechamos de los segundos.
❅ Porque “no solo de pan (ni de casas, carros, trajes, joyas,
y dinero) vive el hombre”, sino de toda palabra que sale
de la boca de Dios.
Y la Palabra de Dios, en resumen, es: “Amaras a Dios sobre todas las cosas y a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”.
