William Henry Harrison is the only man who

So let’s talk about how he got that job.
Harrison was born to a prominent Virginia
family in 1773. He sought fame as a military
officer, fighting Indian tribes in the northwest
in the 1790s. Before long he was the governor
of Indiana Territory … and he was pretty good
at negotiating confusing treaties that took a lot
of land from Indians. Harrison was a national
hero after beating an Indian army in 1811 at
the Battle of Tippecanoe. He followed that up
with a few wins during the War of 1812.

Harrison as a celebrity candidate, after seeing
how well the Democrats had done with
General Andrew Jackson. The notorious “Log
Cabin” campaign of 1840 ignored politics and
focused on personality; the Whigs fudged the

he gave the longest inaugural speech in our

caught a cold, which turned into pneumonia.
In April 1841, he became the first president to
die in office.
