Dear St. Linus Community,
My sister Lynna and I are happy to announce that from July 9th through the 26th we will be attending the 2008
World Youth Day pilgrimage in Australia. We will be travelling with the Passionist Community from Sierra
Madre, California. World Youth Day will gather approximately 125,000 youth from all around the world who
will come together in community to share, grow and celebrate their Catholic faith in addition to being in the
presence of Pope Benedict XVI. The pilgrimage will travel to three cities; first, we will journey to Melbourne,
partaking in days of faith-building through prayer and spiritual growth sessions. Our second pilgrimage will
take us to Sydney where we will encounter faith-filled days of music festivals, vigils and celebrate the mass
with Pope Benedict XVI. Last, the pilgrimage ends in Brisbane where we will participate in community
service within the different areas of the city.
Lynna and I would like to ask the St. Linus community to keep us and the other pilgrims in your prayers while
we share in this wonderful experience. Please know that while we are gone, we will continually keep you, our
St. Linus family in our prayers.

Fr. Joshua Lee
Fr. Joshua is the Pastor of St. Hilary’s Church in Whittier, CA. He is a charismatic priest and a gifted
preacher. He was a nurse by profession when he received the call to enter the priesthood; responding to the
Spirit’s call, he became a Benedictine monk at St. Andrews Abbey for several years prior to taking on duties as
a pastoral priest with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Fr. Joshua is a dynamic and well sought speaker at the
annual SCRC Charismatic Convention; he is also a spiritual director and a retreat master.
Last July 2002, the Lord effected the healing of a cancer patient at St. Irenaeus Church’s healing mass services
through the ministration of Fr. Joshua. Come with your family and friends and experience the anointing healing power of the Holy Spirit.
We would like to thank all of our parishioners and visiting parishioners for being extremely generous with
your weekly donations in helping our parish. Our collections for the week of JUNE 29, 2008 was $11161.00.

School News...not just for families of students...
Saint Linus School is accepting applications for the 2008-2009 school year.
I want to take this opportunity to thank those families who have recruited new families for St. Linus School.
These families will have $200 taken off their September tuition. We are still accepting applications for the primary grades, and, in fact, I would like to have a waiting list for all grades. This waiting list will ensure a stable
enrollment for the years ahead. Good luck with your recruiting efforts, and thank you for spreading the good

Dear Parishioners,
As we close another school year, I want to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude for your support, presence, words of encouragement, and your financial help throughout the school year. Your generous
donations of receipts from our local mall earned $688.00 for our school this year. We have earmarked this
money for the purchase of new televisions for some of our classrooms. Please continue your support of this
program which runs from September to May each year.
Many of our families were able to remain at St. Linus School this past school year because of your generous
donations to the Adopt-A-Student Program. More and more families are experiencing difficult financial situations due to the sudden job losses and soaring gas and food prices. Their children love St. Linus School, and it
is heartbreaking for the parents when they are forced to send them to a different school. With the participation
of many more parishioners in the Adopt-A- Student Program I will be able to subsidize these struggling families during the new school year. Your weekly contribution will make a difference in the lives of many students..

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
It’s Independence Day weekend, and we are in the middle of a series on the Eucharistic Prayer. There
is a link worth tracing between the Declaration of Independence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers
of the Declaration on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and
one of the few Catholics on the political scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to distinguish himself
from other prominent citizens bearing the same name by penning “Charles Carroll of Carrolltown”—a defiant
“come and get me if you dare” postscript aimed at the British.
Carroll’s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task
formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our
customs and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should
be prayed not in Latin, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later,
his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Vatican Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world.

A HUMBLE KING
Like a tonal center in music, the note to which we keep returning in today’s readings is humility. We
wait in joyful expectation for the coming of our Lord as King. But what we are told to expect and rejoice over
is a meek and humble king, riding on an ass. Not horses or chariots of the great and mighty, but a humble beast
carries the Ruler whose dominion stretches “from the River to the ends of the earth” (Zechariah 9:10). This
King comes to banish the tools of the warrior and bring peace. No wonder that a weary world rejoices and
gives thanks to God!

Cardinal Roger Mahony in 2002. The parish committees are foundational in ensuring the safe environment of

“Because We Care”

Provides 3 days of supplement food to family and friends in our community that are unable to make ends meet.
We are fortunate to have a giving family here at St. Linus. We also have the assistance of some of our local
markets and schools. With your help we have provided Holiday food baskets for 50 plus families from this
parish and the surrounding area. Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter have been successful because of your
giving hearts. Each month on a constant basis we are able to help 25 families and anywhere from 5-10 homeless men and women weekly. We are getting new families signing up all the time. With the economy
going the way it is we find ourselves in need of your help even more`. So once again we are reaching out and
asking you to give from your heart.
We have made a list of what we need to help keep providing for our family and friends here at St. Linus
Parish. Remember all monetary donations will go to the “Because We Care” food pantry 100%. Thank you in

Youth Ministry/LIFE TEEN
LIFE Nights are catechetical meetings that immediately follow the Youth
Mass on Sunday evening from 7:15 - 8:45 PM and take place in the parish
hall unless otherwise noted. Teens in preparation for confirmation are expected to attend most nights. There will be no LIFE Nights during July or
August, but they will resume after initial youth ministry parent/candidate
meetings in September.
There will be a youth ministry presence during the month of July. After
the LIFE TEEN Mass starting this Sunday youth ministry will be hosting fellowship fun-raisers, on the July
6, 20, 27. On July 13 youth ministry will be hosting hospitality after all morning masses. There will not be
any youth ministry activities after LIFE TEEN Mass that Sunday. This Sunday Root Beer Floats!
Come and See
Last week youth ministry hosted an evening that broke open the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ document, Renewing the Vision to parishioners and anyone interested in learning more about youth ministry or possibly pursuing a volunteer role in ministry. Thanks to those in attendance. During the evening we
learned that a successful ministry to youth requires the involvement of the entire parish, and in order to grow
and meet the needs of youth and their families, we are all responsible for youth ministry at our parish. Specifically we are looking for adults to be Confirmation Catechists, Host Families for small group meetings, CAPS
(Constant Adult Presence), Hospitality Leaders for Retreats and LIFE Nights, Ministry Co-coordinators for
ministries at the youth liturgy, members to serve on a youth ministry commission, and LIFE TEEN Core team.
No prior experience of ministry to youth is necessary, simply a love for young people and your faith, a desire
to share that faith and serve our teens by entering into relationship with them. Please contact the youth ministry office or leave a message at the parish center if you are interested in learning more. You can also send email to [email protected].

Registration materials for recent 8 grade graduates and any other teens wishing to enter Phase 1 of confirmation preparation have been mailed this week and are available in the youth ministry display by the side door of
the church. Teens interested in confirmation preparation must first register for youth ministry. Candidates returning to phase two of the process will also receive registration in the mail. For complete registration a copy
of the baptismal certificate, a current photo of the teen, $75 yearly fee, and the completed registration form
must all be returned together by August 10, 2008.
Give the Gift of LIFE
It seems like there is always a summer blood shortage. Why? Because nearly 20 percent of the blood donated
at American Red Cross blood drives each year comes from high school and college students. And during the
summer, students break from school and families take vacations - and few people end up donating. Unfortunately, the patients in our hospitals don't get to take a vacation. Currently there is less than a 24-hour supply of
B-Negative blood and less than a 48-hour supply of A-Negative blood, but people with all blood types are encouraged to donate.
When you make your list of summer plans, please include a blood donation. One hour of your summer could
help save 3 lives. If you are eligible, please call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or visit givelife.org to
make your next life-saving appointment. Anyone at least 17 years old (age 16 with written parental consent),
weighing 110 pounds or more, and feeling in good health may be eligible to donate blood.

REGISTRATION FOR FALL CLASSES
We are now accepting Registrations and Re-Registrations for our fall Religion classes. Classes available on
Saturday, 9AM – 10:30AM, for Kinder through 5 and Special Needs English or Wednesday, 6:00PM –
7:30PM, for 1 – 3 Spanish, 3 through 8 English.
Religious Education is for students in Public Schools grades Kinder through 8th and also Special Needs.
Students age 7 and older, who have not been baptized, please register in our classes to prepare for Baptism.

Do you love your faith? Do you love to share it? Do you love children? Do you have some free time? All we
need is two hours of your time either Saturday morning or Wednesday evening.
We need faith filled adults and young adults both English and Spanish to share their love of God with students
in our parish community. There are openings in grades 3-5 on Saturday, 3-8 on Wednesday evening in English
