Johnston High School Newsletter October 2007 Page 2 A Message from Dr. Estrada-Thomas Dear Parents and Guardians, I send warm regards and greetings from the staff at Johnston High School. The first six weeks will be under our belt as you receive this newsletter. Please keep the newsletter handy as it includes much needed information for the second six weeks of school. The 2007-2008 school year opened smoothly and we are optimistic about the changes we have made. Our primary goal is to improve academic performance and remove Johnston High School from the list of unacceptable schools in the state. We have developed a comprehensive plan of action that changes the status quo and creates change at every level of our school. First and foremost, we are changing what is happening in our classrooms, which is foundation of increasing academic achievement. We have teacher leaders from both the campus level and district level who are providing coaching for instruction and new tools to help teachers on a daily basis. Secondly, with assistance from the Gates Foundation and the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, we have developed an intensive monitoring and review process that tracks progress toward achieving our goals every week and is analyzed at the highest level of district leadership on a regular schedule. Third, we are implementing the First Things First reform, which was chosen because it is a proven model (other campuses across the state have demonstrated success with this model), and brings a strong instructional improvement system that identifies needs at the classroom level and focuses immediate professional development to meet that need. Fourth, we have a laser-like focus on student attendance and have created an aggressive attendance plan that strengthens our campus interventions and organizes activities to involve our parents and community. If students don't come to school, they aren't learning, they get behind in class, and won't make academic progress. Fifth, we have a wide range of services for the students, which include academic tutoring Monday through Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon and the addition of the Student Support Services Team. We also have an innovative program called Twilight School which operates from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. and targets a special population of students who are behind with credits and which places them at risk of not graduating on time. The Twilight School gives these students the opportunity to earn those credits while still working full-time during the day. I want to commend our PTSA led by Mrs. Geneva Oliva and our Parent Engagement Specialist, Juan Carlos Ruiz for working diligently to establish a viable, operational PTSA. If you have not joined the PTSA, please consider doing so. There is information in this newsletter on how to join. Lastly, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to be involved with your student's education and to stay informed about what is happening at Johnston. We have been given one last chance to improve all aspects of our academic performance. We cannot do it alone. The staff, parents, guardians, and the community must work together to make Johnston successful and allow it to stay open. If we fail to make the necessary progress, our beloved school will close at the end of this year. It is up to us, together we can make it! With Ram Pride, Celina Estrada-Thomas, Ph.D. Campus Principal We are in it to win! No Excuses. No Diversions! On the web: austinisd.org/johnston Johnston High School Newsletter October 2007 Page 3 Mensage de la Dra. On the web: austinisd.org/johnston Johnston High School Newsletter October 2007 Page 5 Late Start Days Dates Based on the successful Late Start Pilot Program that was conducted at Anderson and Akins high schools in the spring semester 2007, and with the consent of each Campus Advisory Council at the 11 comprehensive high schools, the AISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously on June 11, 2007 to approve the expansion of Late Start Days to include all 11 comprehensive high schools on the following 11 days in the 2007 - 2008 school year: Thursday, October 4, 2007 Thursday, November 1, 2007 Thursday, November 29, 2007 Thursday, December 6, 2007 Thursday, January 17, 2008 Thursday, January 31, 2008 Thursday, February 14, 2008 Thursday, March 27, 2008 Thursday, April 3, 2008 Thursday, April 10, 2008 that it must explore new ways of delivering staff development that are more effective, providing on-going support for teachers, sharing of best practices, and built-in time for assessing the effectiveness of both training and implementation Time D D D Start Time: 10:10 A.M. Campus professional development runs from 8:00 10:00 a.m. Classes start at 10:15 a.m. Teachers and staff should arrive in time so training can begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. Critical Issues D D Traditionally, high schools have been isolating places for teachers with little time for common planning on curriculum issues, regular staff development on instructional improvement, or dedicated periods for discussion about individual student issues. Complex scheduling, full course loads, and additional duties make it difficult for teachers to find time to work or plan together on a regular schedule. Bus schedules will run an hour late on Late Start Days. Parents will still be able to bring their students to school at the usual start time if necessary. Hall monitors, substitute teachers, and other non-teaching staff will provide supervision in the library and/or cafeteria, students will be able to do homework, and structured activities will be available through the tutoring center, college and career center, or DELTA program. D Address other questions to principals. Particularly important was the finding from the extensive research conducted by the Parthenon Group that AISD should provide teachers with on-going training in-between the traditional staff development days to reinforce the training, assess performance, determine if behaviors were changing in the classroom, and help teachers implement what they have learned more effectively. Rationale - Summary AISD conducted an on-line survey of parents at Anderson and Akins to determine their opinion about the pilot Late Start Days. A majority of parents supported the use of Late Start school day as a way to provide professional support to teachers (63%). With 142 parents responding, 96% stated that they knew that their school had a Late Start on all 3 days. Eighty-five percent reported that the school had communicated the purpose of having a late school start. Twenty-one percent of the respondents had concerns about having additional Late Start days. Transportation was their primary concern. Parents also were concerned about loss of instructional time and whether teachers were using the time effectively. The purpose of Late Start is to create time for on-going professional development for teachers to improve teaching and learning without taking teachers out of the classroom. Professional development and common planning time for teachers have emerged as of two the most critical issues that must be addressed to improve teaching and learning and to sustain redesign changes in our high schools While the traditional district and campus staff development days provide important time for training, AISD understands What Parents Said About the Pilot Program On the web: austinisd.org/johnston Johnston High School Newsletter October 2007 Page 6 Dias de Comienzo Tardados Fechas Basado en el éxito de Programa Piloto que fue implementado en las escuelas secundarias Anderson y Akins en el semestre de la primavera del 2007 y con el consentimiento de cada uno de los consejeros consultivos (CAC) de cada una de las 11 escuelas secundarias de Austin. Start Time: 10:10 A.M. namientos. You can get this information free by attending the financial aid workshop "Show Me the Money" on October 11th or the Financial Aid Night (en espanol) at Our Lady of Guadalupe on November 8th. Develop a college planning timeline and calendar with your student. An initial list was given to your student during Advisory. Ask questions. Educate yourself about the process. You might find some interesting things, like college is possible for you, too! Help your student with paperwork when needed. Schedule visits with your student to prospective colleges. Many colleges have separate programs for parent visits. Develop a systematic family savings plan, even if it is just putting away a few dollars a week. Join the PTA. Encourage your student to get involved in school and extracurricular activities. Colleges are not just looking for grades when admitting a student. Encourage your child to attend TestPrep (for the ACT, SAT and T-ASSET) and after-school tutoring sessions presented by the UT Blazers. If your student is a senior, have them register for the SAT by September 10th. The most important thing you can do is to stay involved in your student's decisions about college. Make it clear that you support the decision to get an education beyond high school. Explain that you want to help and that this is a learning process for you, too. This will help your student understand that if you are reluctant to assist it is not because you don't support their decision to go to college but rather you are not sure how to help. When you look at me what do you see? Twilight school targets students who are behind with credits and who have been retained two or more times during the secondary years. The main goal of Twilight School is to have students regain the necessary course credits for appropriate grade classification and re-enter the regular high school program as quickly as possible. All students must be approved through Mr. Harris before admission to Twilight School. A parent or guardian must attend an orientation session with their student before being considered for admission. Twilight School students have a counselor assigned to them. The counselor works with the Twilight School Project Specialist to schedule classes appropriate to each student. The Twilight School Project Specialist works with the corresponding administrator on issues related to attendance, discipline, and academic progress. Program Description Classes are held from 4:30 - 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students may choose to attend Saturday School for extra assistance or D.E.L.T.A. Twilight School is comprised of: individual instruction, group instruction, independent work and group projects. Students receive report cards and grades every six weeks. Parents are called daily if students do not attend and at the end of the six weeks to provide a follow up to the report card. Dinner is provided for students every night. Students are not permitted to leave campus once they enter the building by 4:30 p.m. D.E.L.T.A. is held on the campus from 4:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday and on Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. It may be utilized by Twilight School students pending their individual educational plan. Students should see their counselor for a DELTA prescription if they choose to attend on Saturday mornings. Student Expectations Twilight School students are permitted on campus at 4:15 p.m. All regular school rules, policies, and procedures apply. Twilight School students are JHS students and are permitted to participate in extracurricular activities if scheduling allows it. Student ID’s must be visible at all times. There may be situations when a student needs to be on campus before 4:15 p.m. This may include: taking a standardized test, meeting with the counselor, using the library or speaking with an administrator.
