Enrique ZUAZUA (Eibar, Basque Country, 1961), Full Professor of Applied
Mathematics at the UAM-Autonomous University of Madrid,
Ikerbasque Researcher and Founding Scientific Director of BCAM-Basque
Center for Applied Mathematics, Bilbao, has received the degree and title of
Doctor Honoris Causa at the University of Lorraine, France, for the relevance
of his scientific contributions and his long lasting and fruitful collaboration
with the Institute of Mathematics Élie Cartan of that institution, leaded by
Professor Marius TUCSNAK.
The ceremony for the honorary award will take place on October 9th in the historic city of Nancy in
the French northeast, from hands of Professor Pierre MUTZENHARDT, President of the University.
The inaugural address of the awarded is entitled "Mathematics: A window to the future."
The University of Lorraine was established in 201, as the merging of various academic institutions in
the region (Metz and Nancy cities) and has a strong mathematical tradition. Proof of this is the
activity of leading-high level personalities as the Geometer Élie CARTAN (1869-1951), the analyst
Laurent SCHWARTZ (1915-2002, Fields Medal in 1950) and the influential applied mathematician
Jacques Louis LIONS (1928-2001).
The University also has a strong experience in technology transfer in the field of Mathematics that
is developed, in particular, through collaboration with INRIA - Institut National de Recherche en
Informatique et Automatique.

Applied Mathematics- eko Zuzendari Zientifiko sortzailea, besteak beste, Lorraineko
Unibertsitateko Honoris Causa Doktoretza gradu eta titulua jaso du, ikerketan
egindako ekarpen garrantzitsuengatik eta Élie Cartan Matematika Institutuarekin
egindako elkarlanagatik eta Marius TUCSNAK.
Sari banaketaren zeremonia Frantziako ipar-ekialdeko Nancy hiri historikoan egingo da datorren urriaren 9an
saria jasoko du Pierre Mutzenhardt Lorraineko Unibertsitateko Presidentearen eskutik. Inbestidura-hitzaldia
eskainiko du “Matematika: etorkizunerako leihoa” izenburupean.
Lorraineko Unibertsitatea 2012.urtean sortu zen Metz eta Nancy-ko hainbat erakunderen bat-egitearen ondorioz.
Matematika arloko tradizio sendoko unibertsitatea da Lorrainekoa eta horren erakusgarri da bertan aritu diren
goi-mailako matematikarien zerrenda: Èlie Cartan geometrialaria (1869-1951), Laurent Schwartz analista
(1915-2002, Fields Domina jaso zuena 1950ean) eta Jacques Louis Lions (1928-2001) matematikari aplikatua.
Horrez gain, unibertsitatea teknologiaren transferentzian ere izen handikoa da matematika esparruan, INRIAInstitut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique erakundearekin lankidetzan.

Enrique ZUAZUA, (Eibar 1961), Catedrático de Matemática Aplicada de la UAMUniversidad Autónoma de Madrid, Investigador Ikerbasque y Director Científico Fundador
de BCAM-Basque Center for Applied Mathematics, Bilbao, ha recibido el grado y título de
Doctor Honoris Causa la Universidad de Lorraine, Francia, por la relevancia de sus
aportaciones científicas y su dilatada y fructuosa colaboración con el Instituto de
Matemáticas Élie Cartan de dicha Institución, dirigido por el profesor Marius TUCSNAK.
La ceremonia de entrega del galardón Honoris Causa, tendrá lugar en la histórica ciudad de Nancy, en el
noroeste francés, de manos de Pierre MUTZENHARDT, Presidente de la Université de Lorraine, el próximo 9 de
octubre. El discurso de investidura del premiado lleva el título "Matemáticas: Una ventana al futuro".
La Universidad de Lorraine se constituyó en 2012 tras la fusión de diversas instituciones universitarias de la
región (Metz y Nancy) y cuenta con una fuerte tradición matemática. Prueba de ello es la actividad desarrollada
en ella, por grandes personalidades matemáticas de la envergadura del geómetra Élie CARTAN (1869-1951), del
analista Laurent SCHWARTZ (1915-2002, Medalla Fields en 1950) y del influyente matemático aplicado Jacques
Louis LIONS (1928-2001).
Esta Universidad tiene además una fuerte vocación de transferencia tecnológica que en el ámbito de las
matemáticas se desarrolla a través de la colaboración con el INRIA - Institut National de Recherche en
Informatique et Automatique.
