It has been such an honor for Mr. Silva to get to know his brilliant, hardworking staff and remarkable students over the last year. Mr. Silva’s own education includes a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a master’s degree in educational administration from California State University, Northridge. He began his career as a middle school math teacher before switching over to teaching English. He has been married to his wife, Diane, for 27 years, and they have two boys ages 18 and 23. They also are the proud parents of two dogs—Darla, 15, and Stewie, 5. He began his career as a long term substitute teacher at York Elementary School. After one month as a substitute teacher, he became the 7th Grade Life Science teacher at Hawthorne Intermediate School, which is now known as Hawthorne Middle School. In 2003, Mr. Berumen applied for and became the first Biology teacher at the soon to be open Hawthorne Math & Science Esau Berumen Academy, HMSA. He is one of the six HMSA founding teachers. Principal As the school grew, he became the Science Department Chair and the school’s College Prep Advisor. Mr. Berumen also played a critical role in the process and approval of HMSA’s courses by the University of California’s Office of the President. During his last year of teaching Biology at HMSA, he received the school’s Teacher of the Year award. In 2007, Mr. Berumen became the assistant principal of HMSA, and in 2011 he became HMSA’s third principal. Mr. Berumen earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Occidental College. He earned both his teaching credential and his first Master’s degree in Cross Cultural Education from National University. In 2004, he went back to school to earn both his administrative credential and second Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from California State University Northridge. Recently, Occidental College’s Alumni Association awarded Mr. Berumen with its top honor, the 2012 Alumni Seal Award. Mr. Berumen has been married for 13 years and is father to three children. Two of his children will be attending schools in the Hawthorne School District this coming year. He grew up in Santa Cruz California and attended college at the University of Redlands, where he played football and earned a BA in History. After graduating in 1997, he received his teaching credential and MA in Cross Cultural Teaching from National University. In 1998 Mr. Goldstein was hired by the Hawthorne School District. He taught 8th grade Mike Goldstein Language Arts/ Social Studies and was a Special Projects teacher at Hawthorne Middle School for 7 years. During that time he Principal enrolled in the Educational Administrative program at California State University Northridge, and graduated with an MA in Educational Administration in 2006. Mr. Goldstein has served as Assistant Principal at HMS (2006-2008) and Eucalyptus (2009) and Principal at York Elementary School from 2009-2013. He is excited to begin his third year as the Principal of Eucalyptus Elementary School. Mr. Goldstein lives in Redondo Beach with his wife Cynthia and two daughters; Cyndi (age 10) and Amanda (age 9). She has been in the field of education for 24 years. During this time she has been a science teacher, activity director, middle school site administrator, and elementary school site administrator. Ms. Ostensen earned her Bachelor’s Wendy Ostensen Degree in Zoology from California State University, Long Beach and her Master’s Degree/ Administrative Credential from Principal California State University, Dominguez Hills. Ms. Ostensen grew up in southern California and resides in Hawthorne (The City of Good Neighbors) with her two sons, Tanner and Dane, former and present HSD students. She is excited to collaborate with the dedicated Jefferson staff to continue the implementation of the Common Core State Standards which is preparing students for success in college and career readiness. Ms. Ostensen is also looking forward to working with Jefferson’s dedicated students and parents in order to improve and enrich student achievement. She has been an employee of the Hawthorne School District since 1997 as an elementary teacher, literacy coach, and assistant principal at the elementary and middle school levels. Ms. Jones graduated from the University of Southern California (USC) in 1995 with a degree in psychology. She earned her teaching credential through Chapman University and LaTima Jones attended Pepperdine University to complete her master’s degree. Principal Ms. Jones was a student-athlete throughout her years at USC, earning the Scholar Athlete Award of Honor for Academic Excellence, as receiving a solid education was her primary goal. She earned All-American honors in track and field, was a Pac-10 Conference champion, and qualified for the 1996 Olympic Trials. She uses these experiences to connect with students. She stresses that education is the foundation on which they will build all of their future success. Dr. Ray grew up in Anaheim, California but began her teaching career in the Bronx, New York. She returned to California and joined the Hawthorne School District family in 1999. She has taught third and fifth grades at Washington and Kornblum Elementary Schools and sixth grade math and science at Bud Carson Middle School. Dr. Ray also served as the literacy coach at Jefferson Elementary school for several years before Patricia Ray becoming an administrator. Dr. Ray was the assistant principal Principal at Zela Davis Elementary School for two years before moving to Prairie Vista Middle School where she has served as the assistant principal for the past three years. Dr. Ray graduated from the University of San Diego in 1986 with a degree in political science and sociology, earned her teaching credential and master’s degree in elementary education from Hunter College in New York City, and attended Pepperdine University to complete a master’s degree in administration. Most recently Dr. Ray graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a doctoral degree in educational leadership for social justice. Dr. Ray is prepared and excited to take on this new challenge of being the instructional leader at Prairie Vista Middle School. Having worked at the school for the past three years Dr. Ray knows what a great team of students, staff, and families she has to work with. Preceding his tenure David Mallchok with the Hawthorne School District which began in August Site Administrator 1999, David served as an Assistant Principal, Magnet School Assistant Principal Coordinator and Classroom Teacher, Grades K through 12, with the Los Angeles Unified School District on elementary, middle and high school campuses in Central Los Angeles. David earned degrees from The University of South Carolina and United States International University. He successfully completed professional credential coursework through The University of La Verne and National University. David motivates excellence in staff, students and parents and maintains a safe and secure school campus that promotes values including responsibility, accountability, cooperation, appropriate social skills, acceptance of others, equal opportunity and satisfaction in self, family, school and society. David provides real, considerate, judicious answers to parents’ concerns, requests and inquiries. He deals with issues in a resilient and decisive manner and is able to channel the diversity of teachers’ talents supporting them in amplifying teacher and student abilities alike. Mr. Collins was born and raised in the South Bay. He attended the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Art History. After college, he began substitute teaching in Hawthorne. He was hired as a Michael Collins full time teacher during his first year substituting at Ramona where he taught first grade for three years. Mr. Collins moved Principal on to teach fourth grade, fifth grade and a fourth and fifth grade combination class. After eight years in the classroom, Mr. Collins became the Special Projects teacher for two years where he trained teachers, managed site programs, ran parent education classes, and oversaw grade-level curriculum, data analysis and budget management. Mr. Collins earned his master’s degree and administrative credential from Cal-State University at Dominguez Hills. In 2000, he was assigned an assistant principal position at Washington Elementary School. He has also served as an assistant principal at Jefferson Elementary, Eucalyptus Elementary, and Prairie Vista Middle School. In 2004, Mr. Collins was named the principal of Kornblum Elementary School, where he served two years. In 2006, Mr. Collins returned to Ramona Elementary as the principal of the school. He thoroughly enjoys being a part of the Ramona community and watching the school grow. He has been married for 22 years to his beautiful wife Samantha and credits his career success to her and their 3 children - Brittany, Tevin, and Andrew. Mrs. Cruz-Brown has been with the Hawthorne School District since 1998. She graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1998 with a degree in sociology and earned her teaching credential from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 2003. In 2004, she received her master’s degree in administration from Pepperdine University. Maritza Mrs. Cruz-Brown began her teaching career at Eucalyptus Cruz-Brown Principal School, where she taught second and fifth grades. After nine years as a “koala-ty” educator, she became a hawk at Hawthorne Middle School, where she taught sixth grade math and science and played an integral part in the expansion of the Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Academy (TWBI) to Hawthorne Middle School. In 2012 she became the math coach for Washington and Kornblum Elementary Schools. After two years of coaching, she served as the assistant principal at Zela Davis Elementary School and was responsible for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program. Mrs. Cruz-Brown grew up in Southern California and now resides in Lakewood, California with her family. They have always encouraged her to grow professionally and try new things. Kathy Carbajal will begin her sixth year as principal at Zela Davis STEM PREP Elementary School. She has been in education for the past 18 years. During this time she has been an Administrator, English Learners Special Projects Teacher, and Classroom Teacher. Kathy Carbajal earned her Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, and Administrative Credential from California State University, Kathy Carbajal Dominguez Hills. Prior to attending CSUDH she spent two years in Mexico and attended the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, Principal where she further enhanced her Spanish proficiency skills. In 2014-2015, with the continued support of her amazing staff, Kathy Carbajal was able to expand Zela Davis’ Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Program. Students participated in STEM programs such as Project Lead the Way (PLTW), Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK), and Experium Science Academy. Exiting 5th grade students were selected by USC to participate in their Summer Science Camp. Ms. Carbajal’s ongoing mission for Zela Davis students is to make computer literacy an integral part of the daily curriculum, using iPads and Chromebooks for research projects and science activities. She hopes to increase the number of computers in each classroom so that teachers can assign an activity and students can work in pairs with a Chromebook or iPad to complete the task. Increasing students’ familiarity with computers will also improve their typing skills and ability to use word processing programs, something they will need to master before taking the new Smarter Balanced state exams starting in the third grade. In 2015-2016 Ms. Carbajal and her STEM Staff will expand the Project Lead the Way curriculum from three classrooms to ten classrooms, in grades two through five. The PLTW curriculum will include topics such as Energy Conversion, Stability and Motion, and Robotics and Automation!
