Dramatic Play Develops Important Life Skills LA UP Preschool Information D HS Pretend or dramatic play not only offers a variety of learning opportunities for children in their early years, it also reinforces the idea that young children learn best through play. One place for a child to engage in active pretend play is a highquality preschool program like LAUP. Our LAUP Preschools provide an educational and nurturing environment where the teachers incorporate dramatic play to develop a child's cognitive, motor, social and emotional skills. Dramatic play is a tool used to help develop all these skills in a fun and engaging way. Yukon Ave., Hawthorne, CA 90250 • 310/676-1908 • www.budcarsonmiddle.org Glad to Have an iPad By Louise Rosen, Sixth-Grade Teacher This year, the sixth-grade students at Bud Carson STEM Academy stretched the limits of their imagination in the iPad lab. Mrs. Cheryl Franklin, our technical leader for the district, helped us to attain our goals. Ms. Rosen’s language arts classes used the iPad lab for three projects: a video on a career using the application iMovie, a video Patricia Jordan to illustrate a poem using the program Animoto, and a culture Principal project comparing China to their own cultures. The projects were shared on Google Docs, and presented orally to fellow students in class. In our sixth-grade math classes, Ms. Smith and Mrs. Johnson utilized the iPad lab to have their students use the program “All About Me” in the Pages application. Students took pictures of themselves and wrote their own profiles. Ms. Smith’s classes also did a research project about earthquakes, and attached a video to explain it. Ms. Fortin’s classes were able to use the iPad lab in a variety of ways. They used various programs to enhance their vocabulary and writing skills. These programs were Notes, Doodle Buddy, and Pages. BCMS was observed by three separate districts: Westminster, Oxnard and Bassett. We were honored to show our progress this year and convey ideas to different teachers. Having the iPad transformed our students’ ideas in a concise and individual manner. It helped them to effectively express their ideas visually and creatively. 12044 S. These ambitious staff members welcomed more than 30 students who signed up to participate in the choir program. The group meets weekly to practice honing their vocal skills. So far, the students Gretchen Janson have performed at school events two times this year. All in the Principal audience note both their vocal talents and their confidence on stage. We salute the student participants in our choir this year and we also want to formally thank Mr. Perez, Mrs. Masuda, and Ms. Corvera for giving up their personal time to create this opportunity for the Eucalyptus students. You want proof, you say? Okay, well—for instance, did you know that… HMSA was recently named a Title One Academic Achievement Award winner for the seventh consecutive year? HMSA was recently named one of the top 100 high schools in Esau Berumen the nation by U.S. News and World Report and was selected as Principal the 12th-best high school in all of California? HMSA’s API jumped another 19 points last year to 894 out of 1,000? HMSA’s graduating class of 2013 has been accepted to over 225 four-year colleges, including 12 Aviators who were accepted to CSULB, five to UCLA, and two to UC Berkeley and Occidental College, not to mention others from USC, Hofstra University, Loyola Marymount University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute? Almost every UC school and many other prestigious universities now have an alumnus who is also an HMSA alum? Well, now you do! As Advanced Placement testing and spring semester draw to a close and the Summer Bridge program gets rolling for our incoming ninth-graders, HMSA continues to evolve and thrive thanks to the dedication of our faculty, staff, students and parents. Why, the administration and teachers recently had a two-hour discussion after a long school day just to tweak the school’s mission statement in preparation for our accreditation visit next year! Is there a difference between exemplary and laudatory? We think so—we’re passionate because we care! Sixty contestants from 24 middle schools and high schools were in attendance. Hawthorne had nine participants. The competition provided a $500 cash grand prize and a chance to connect and impress dozens of Southern California entrepreneurs. Rudy Salas Students developed and researched their business ideas as Principal part of their business elective classes. The business plan consists of a solution to a problem in the marketplace, an analysis of the market, and a presentation of financial information, including start-up costs, costs of materials and labor, retail and wholesale costs, sales projections, and gross and net profit. The contestants gave eight-minute presentations, which highlighted viable marketing opportunities, firm financial structure, and adequate return on investment. They were judged by entrepreneurs from around the Los Angeles area. In the second round, contestants had one minute to pitch their ideas to another set of judges, who then determined the grand-prize winner. After two rounds of pitching their ideas and business plans, student Joshlyn Mazariegos received fourth place, Syvanah Hance earned second place, and Olrando Gonzales and Linda Rosas won the grand prize of $500. As the 2012–2013 school year comes to an end, we would like to wish all our students the very best.
