Trabajó como redactora, editora y productora
para publicidad, cine y televisión. Sus
cortometrajes y documentales se han exhibido
extensivamente en todo el mundo y recibió varios
premios, nacionales e internacionales. Tiempo
presente, su opera prima en largometraje,
ganó el ‘New Director Award’ en el Festival
Internacional de Cine de San Francisco y el
Premio Especial del Jurado y el Premio de la
Crítica a mejor film en el Golden Boll Film
Festival en Turquía.
She worked as copy writer, editor and producer
for advertising, film and TV. Her short films and
documentaries have been screened worldwide
and received several awards nationally and
internationally. Her debut feature Present
Tense won the ‘New Director's Award’ in the San
Francisco International Film Festival as well as
the ‘Special Jury Award’ and the ‘Critics Award
for Best Film’ in the Golden Boll Film Festival
in Turkey.
Mina es joven, está desempleada y quiere irse de Turquía a buscar un futuro mejor, preferentemente en
los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, su precaria situación económica hace imposible obtener no solamente
el dinero necesario para el pasaje, sino la visa y los papeles necesarios para quedarse en norteamérica.
Cansada de su situación, decide mentir para conseguir trabajo: afirma que tiene experiencia leyendo la
fortuna en la borra del café y pronto, gracias a su imaginación y expresividad, consigue muchos clientes.
En las predicciones de Mina se proyecta su futuro, literal y metafóricamente: no solamente refleja
sus deseos y frustraciones, sino que la interacción con sus clientes le proporciona una vía para escaparse
de sí misma a través de las vidas de las mujeres que la consultan y un desahogo económico mediante
el cual seguir acercándose a su sueño. Tiempo presente es un film inteligente y sensible, honesto y
humano, que no proporciona respuestas fáciles a caracteres moldeados por las poderosas fuerzas del
capitalismo global, la alienación ciudadana y el consumismo.
Mina is young, unemployed and wants to leave Turkey in search of a better future, preferably in the United
States. However, her unstable financial situation makes it imposible to get money for the ticket, let alone
the visa and necessary paperwork to stay in North America. Tired of her situation, she decides to lie in
order to get a job: she states she has experience in reading coffee grounds and soon enough, thanks to
her imagination and eloquence, she gets many clients.
Mina’s future is projected into her predictions, literally and metaphorically: she does not only reflect
her desires and frustrations, but the interaction with her clients also provides her with a way to escape
herself through the lives of the women that seek her help and a financial relief through which she can
work towards her dream. Present Tense is an intelligent and sensitive, honest and human film, which does
not provide easy answers to characters moulded by the powerful forces of global capitalism, alienation
and consumerism.
