CLAUDIA SAINTE-LUCE
(Veracruz, México, 1982)
Egresada de la Licenciatura en Artes Audiovisuales
de la Universidad de Guadalajara en 2004, dirigió
los cortometrajes Muerte Anunciada (2006) y
El Milagrito de San Jacinto (2007). En 2010 es
apoyada por el IMCINE para desarrollar su opera
prima Los insólitos peces gato.
She has a degree in Audiovisual Arts from the
University of Guadalajara (2004). She directed
the short films Muerte Anunciada (2006) and El
Milagrito de San Jacinto (2007). In 2010, IMCINE
supported her in the production of her first
feature film, The Amazing Catfish.
Claudia, joven solitaria que trabaja en un supermercado, termina en Urgencias con apendicitis. Allí conoce a Martha, la mujer de la cama de al lado y a dos de sus hijas. El curioso equilibrio de esta familia
logra que Claudia establezca una amistad con Martha, y cuando descubre que la salud de ésta se agrava,
comienza una conexión con cada uno de sus cuatro hijos. Hay mucho de autobiográfico en esta película
que la directora Sainte-Luce construye con gran sensibilidad evitando, además, los golpes bajos y clichés
que podrían resultar de la conjunción: niños enfrentados a la inminencia de la muerte de su madre, una
enfermedad implacable que la llevará rápidamente hacia el fin –y que la convierte en una moribunda
consciente–, y el acercamiento de una extraña a ese universo intimo que es la familia y que termina
por absorberla. Una película sobre la vida más que sobre la muerte, sobre la solidaridad, dirigida con
excelente pulso cinematográfico y profundo respeto por la historia y sus personajes. La cámara lúcida
de Agnès Godard y las brillantes actuaciones del elenco, le insuflan un aire fresco, dinámico, con el que
se construye una película genuina.
Claudia, a lonely young woman who works in a supermarket, ends up in the ER with appendicitis. There,
she meets Martha, the woman on the bed next to her, and two of her daughters. This family’s curious
balance allows Claudia to become friends with Martha, and when she founds out the latter’s health gets
worse, a connection is made with each of Martha’s four children. There are a lot of autobiographical
instances in this film, constructed with great sensitivity by director Sainte-Luce, also avoiding the low
blows and clichés which could crop up from the combination of these factors: children faced with their
mother’s imminent death, a ruthless disease that will quickly lead her to her end –and turns her into an
aware dying woman-, and a stranger’s involvement in that private family universe which she ends up
immersed in. A film more about life than death, about solidarity, directed with great cinematographic skill
and a deep respect for the story and its characters. Agnès Godard’s lucid camera and the cast’s brilliant
performances, give it a dynamic breath of fresh air, on which a genuine film is built.
