I still remember what happened one night when I was ten years old and my sister was
eight. It was 8:00 p.m. in the month of September when my parents put my sister and me to
bed. It was still daylight, and we weren’t sleepy; so we decided to make up a game.
Our tennis shoes were on the floor and had some stickers in them. So we agreed that
each one of us would put a sticker in our mouth to see who could hold it the longest. My sister
started. She put one in her mouth, and after a while she took it out. She told me, “Now it’s
your turn.” I put one in my mouth, and after a while I told my sister, “I swallowed my sticker.”
(Really, I had thrown it under my bed.) She said, “I don’t believe you. If you swallowed one,
let’s see you swallow another.” At that moment I started to laugh, and my sister put another
sticker in my mouth. This time the sticker didn’t stay in my mouth but went straight to my
vocal chords.
My parents, who were watching television, became frightened when I tried to tell them
what had happened. I couldn’t talk. They took me to the hospital. I was really scared and was
crying. When the doctor examined me he said that it wasn’t going to be easy to take it out. He
had to operate on me. After the operation, my Dad commented that that was the most
expensive sticker he had ever seen. It was a funny and scary experience at the same time.
