Pastor’s Letter
March 19/20, 2016
Days of Fire
Dear Parish Family,
Palm Sunday is a day which has captured the imagination of Catholics for millennia.
It
commemorates the triumphant entrance of Jesus into the holy city of Jerusalem only days before his
passion and death. For us it marks our entrance into the holiest week of the church year. Although these
days are undoubtedly the most important feasts of our faith, our church has never treated them as days
of obligation and consequently only a minority of Catholics attend each year. So this week I write to
you a word of encouragement to enter more deeply into this holy week, not out of mere obligation but
out of love and respect for the important mysteries we celebrate.
Holy Thursday commemorates the institution of the Eucharist. It profoundly connects the Eucharist
to simple acts of loving service. And so we remember Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet. It is a
powerful and moving celebration. We are most happy this year to welcome Bishop Nelson Perez as our
celebrant for this mass.
Good Friday remembers the suffering and dying of Jesus. In embracing our human condition, our
Lord knew human suffering and death. On this day we try to see meaning in the most difficult of
human experiences: our own suffering, grief, and death.
This year we continue our Living Stations of the Cross service at 7:30 on Good Friday. This
service follows the pattern of stations of the cross but the stations are acted out by young people of our
parish and there is a beautiful music program for each station. There will also be parishioners who will
share a reflection on their own journey of the cross.
The Easter Vigil Mass is rich in symbols of the Lord’s resurrection: fire, water, and the baptism and
confirmation of adults. There is no more powerful liturgy anywhere in our church year. Easter Masses
are filled with signs and symbols of newness and life.
So I extend to you an invitation. Invitations are always better than obligations. I can only tell you to
come and see, to be open and to experience. If you have never attended the liturgies of this most holy
week, then perhaps this year is your year to begin.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Reconciliation in the Season of Lent
Receiving the Sacrament of reconciliation is an excellent practice
in the season of Lent. Our parish celebrates this sacrament every
Saturday from 4:00 to 4:45PM before our Saturday evening mass.
Our pastor and priests who assist here are also available by
appointment to celebrate the sacrament. During Holy Week we
will join with all the parishes of our diocese to celebrate
reconciliation from 3 to 8 PM on Monday, March 21st. Be sure to take some time to
experience the miracle of God’s healing forgiveness.

In Sympathy
Eleanor Finalborgo
We mourn the passing of Eleanor “Ellie” Finalborgo on March 2, 2016 at the age of 92. A
mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on March 15th by Rev. Michael A. Vetrano at the
Basilica Parish of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. A private burial of cremains followed.
Ellie was a parishioner of Sacred Hearts for many, many years. She was one of several
people who counted the collections on Mondays at the parish. She and her late husband,
Vic, owned and ran Catena’s in Southampton, which is now run by her children. One of her
greatest joys was cooking for her family and friends and she especially loved gathering the
family around the table on Sundays. Our sympathies go out to her children and their spouses, Victor and Jane,
Vincent and Kathy, David and Kathleen Finalborgo, and Mary and Richard Manzo; seven
grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
William Culver
and friends.

Did you know...efforts at worldwide contraception and sterilization are often based on questionable
information regarding over-population?
In fact, one-half of countries have a birth rate below the
replacement rate of 2.1 children per couple. The Population Research Institute, founded in 1989
by Fr. Paul Marx, OSB, has a mission to expose the myth of over-population, to expose human rights
abuses committed in population control programs, and to promote, worldwide, pro-natal and profamily attitudes, laws, and policies. For more information see their website at www.pop.org
Reflections On the Gospel

PAX CHRISTI’S 34th ANNUAL GOOD FRIDAY WAY OF THE CROSS: Join with nearly 500
people in the largest public Christian peace witness in New York City. The Way of the Cross is a modern-day Stations of the Cross, witnessing for peace and justice in the streets of our city. This year’s
theme is, “Living Lives of Mercy with Care and Compassion; Looking with the Eyes of Mercy” on
those most in need. At each Station we reflect on our participation in a world still characterized by crucifixion. The walk begins at 8:30 AM on March 25th at 47th Street between First and Second Avenues,
proceeds along 42nd Street and ends on 42nd Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues around noon.

Social Ministry
Pope John Paul II referred to the Holy Eucharist as "the greatest treasure of the Church," and yet even many
devoted Catholics have a very limited understanding of this powerful sacrament. This
film will change all that. The viewer will come away with a completely new awareness
that the Eucharist is not just about receiving Communion; it's about transforming your
daily life.
Deeply based on the Scriptures, the writings of the Saints, and the teachings of our two
most recent Popes, this profound and remarkable film will introduce you to some of the
"hidden" truths of the Eucharist truths that have always been embraced by theologians,
saints, and mystics, but have rarely been passed on to the average person in a meaningful
way. In 7 Secrets of the Eucharist, these truths are finally made accessible to all, as
author Vinny Flynn shows how each reception of Holy Communion can be a life-changing experience.
The St. Bernard League.
Year round residents know what a beautiful time each season in the East End can be,
but for many senior citizens the cold of winter and storms brought by spring and summer can be frightening and isolating. For some Parishioners the isolation may not be
from weather related issues, but from the reality of family living and working far away.
You can help! We hope that you and your family will consider signing up to ‘adopt’ a
member of our parish community, and partner with them through each season, or when
the ‘red flags’ go up. You would be responsible to reach out to your assigned neighbor
and be a lifeline for them during the long days of winter, or the heat of the summer sunshine.
There is no deadline or cutoff period to join this Ministry. You can call the Office of Parish Social Ministry at any time to either volunteer your time or to be added to the list.
__I/we could use help in any season. Please include me in this ministry.
__I/we would like to join and help one of our parishioners.

APOSTOLADO HISPANO
Señor apresado y tratado como un malhechor;
abandonado por sus discípulos, condenado a muerte,
azotado y ultrajado.
