Pastor’s Letter Our Ministries Appeal April 6/7 Dear Parish Family: My first Holy Week here at Sacred Hearts was nothing short of amazing. The music was beautiful as Jo Ann Morse and her choirs and musicians led us in prayer. Our lectors, servers, ministers, ushers, and decorators worked together as a true community of faith. Even the weather cooperated! I felt truly lifted and carried by the energy of this parish community. We blessed and were blessed by the many people who came to celebrate the dying and rising of Jesus at our parish. Holy Week also helps me to recognize how we are part of a larger church here on Long Island. I always look forward to the Chrism Mass at St. Agnes Cathedral. Almost all of the priests and deacons of our diocese attend and I think it helps us to recognize how our individual parishes and ministries are connected. This week I would like you to think about one way that we support this larger church that is the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Our Catholic Ministries Appeal is an annual effort to support many ministries on which our parishes depends. Here on the East End we are blessed with an excellent Catholic High School, McGann-Mercy, that many of our students attend. The Bishop Gerald Ryan Center in Hampton Bays does wonderful work and has served a number of Sacred Hearts parishioners. Of course there is also the education of our priests and deacons, programs of religious education and formation of ministers, to mention just some of the services we receive from our diocese. Our parish appeal goal is $51,400 which is a very reachable goal for us. Last year we were very close, having raised about 90 percent of our goal. If you have never contributed to the appeal before, this would be a wonderful time to begin. If you have been supporting the appeal, I hope you will continue your commitment. Pledges to the appeal are payable over 12 months so even a gift of $10 a month will make a huge difference in reaching our goal. Besides doing our part for our diocese there is another great incentive to reach our goal. Eighty percent of contributions over our goal are returned to the parish for our own ministries. This week our committee will be at Mass to take your pledge. The Catholic Ministries Appeal supports important works in religious formation, education, and social service. I hope you will consider being a part. Sincerely yours in Christ Rev. Michael A. They are eager to take classes in their major, excited to invest themselves in worthy causes, and ready to take on the challenges of leadership. But as they grow in these areas, they may still experience hardships – confusing new relationships, homesickness, struggles with studies – and they may realize that while they packed all their favorite music and dorm items, they left their Bible and faith life at home. When this happens, the Catholic Campus Ministry of the Diocese of Rockville Centre steps in and serves over 50,000 students on Long Island; so their hearts, minds, and souls can be developed during the critical years of their formation. One Catholic Campus Minister explains, “My goals as a campus minister are to continue to evangelize, to reach more students on campus, and to bring the Gospel message in a way that engages them, [so] that they can understand that while they’re studying, they’re on the road to Heaven. The goal in life is to become a professional in whatever capacity, but also to go to Heaven.” Without Campus Ministry, there would be a huge gap in the faith lives of the college students on Long Island. When you support the Catholic Ministries Appeal, you support the faith lives of hundreds of students at secular universities across our Long Island community. By Juan J. Sosa, Pbro., from Liturgia y Canción 2013 © 2012, OCP.
