Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Fatima /
Queridos parroquianos y amigos de Nuestra Señora de Fátima,
Summer is a time to enjoy recreational activities such as spending time at the beach, vacations, barbeques,
and being with family and friends. It is a time of relaxation and reflection and thus we recreate ourselves. This
summer I have spent time reading some spiritual books that have energize and renewed me. Saint Bernard of
Clairvaux said that "spiritual reading and prayer are the arms by which hell is conquered and paradise won."
Saint Ambrose of Milan stated: "We address him when we pray; we hear him when we read."
A couple of week’s ago I read the book The End and the Beginning: Pope John Paul II - The Victory of Freedom,
the Last Years, the Legacy by George Weigel regarding Pope John Paul II and his impact on the world and the
Church. Pope John Paul II was singularly responsible, during his pontificate, for the renewal of the priests and
the encouragement of young men to enter a vocation to the priesthood as well as young men and women
seeking a vocation to the consecrated life.
Many evangelical protestants, on average, read about eight books a year regarding their faith. Catholics on average read less than one a year.
Please read at least five pages a day of a great Catholic book that will stimulate your life as a practicing Catholic and offer you the opportunity for
God to speak to you in the pages you read.

Catholic Mens Fellowship Meeting
SATURDAY, AUGUST 10, 6:30 – 7:55AM
Solemnity of the Assumption
of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Join us as we discover how we explain our beliefs and justify our
positions against non-Catholic misconceptions about the Catholic
Church and its teachings. In other words, how to confidently
explain our faith in a way others will listen and understand.
HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION - AUGUST 15
We are an informal group of men who discuss topics about faith,
fatherhood, and fraternity through Catholic eyes. We meet in
McGowan Hall the 2nd and 4th Saturday mornings of each month,
and our casual setting allows us to share modern issues that are
sometimes up-close and personal.
The celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed
Virgin Mary has its roots in the very early Church of Jerusalem.
However, due to the Christian unrest in that area of the world during
the first three centuries, little documented evidence exists. The
solemnity was celebrated on different days in various parts of the
world until sometime in the sixth or seventh century, when August
15 became the norm. An interesting story recounts that Emperor
Marcian asked the Bishop of Jerusalem to bring the relics of Mary to
the capital in 451, at the Council of Chalcedon. The bishop’s response
was that Mary had no relics because she was assumed into Heaven.
This ancient belief of our faith was made doctrine in 1950 by Pope
Pius XII, confirming the ancient tradition of celebrating this event.
Join us at Mass to enter into this ancient celebration.
JustFaith Program Groups Forming
Are you seeking to live more deeply with a greater sense of purpose?
Our Lady of Fatima’s Social Awareness Leadership Team is offering
the JustFaith program beginning this fall. The JustFaith program is a
small-group process that offers an opportunity for people of faith to
experience a spiritual journey that leads to compassionate commitment.
If you want to help transform the world through love and service,
and are willing to change in the process, then please email
[email protected] or call Lisa Grace at 233-3794. Pick up a flyer
for more information. The program begins this fall and meets
weekly for 4 phases of 6 sessions each over the course of 6-9 months.
Bible Timeline
Class Certificates
of Completion
Our Lady of Fatima had two
classes that completed The Bible
Timeline Study Class. This was
a 23-week class that took the participants on inspiring an in-depth
overview from the Old Testament through the New Testament.
The Tuesday morning class had 29 students and the Thursday
evening class had 18 students that completed the class and
received their Certificates of Completion. Congratulations to
all on your accomplishment.
Are you interested in helping with the RCIA?
There are two major ministries that serve those interested in becoming
Catholic – sponsors and catechists & team members. Sponsors are
members of the parish who are willing to walk with the catechumens
and candidates throughout the process. Your duties are to be in
contact with a catechumen or candidate once a week, helping them
find answers to their questions. This ministry does not require prior
experience or special training, just a welcoming spirit.
Catechists & team members facilitate adult learning through small
group gatherings. Catechists are required to move toward getting
diocesan certification. Team members are parishioners who have a
sincere interest in the catechumens & candidates - welcoming them
and encouraging them along their journey. Contact Rosa Rama at
492-4101, x119 or [email protected] for more details.
