Refurbishment of the Nemesio
Camacho ‘El Campin’ Stadium
Bogota, Colombia
Coating: Sikafloor®
Stadium
Project Description
Colombia is the country that has been selected by FIFA to host the
U-20’s 2011 Football World Cup.
The Nemesio Camacho ‘El Campin’ Stadium in Bogota, was opened on
the 10th August 1938 for the Bolivarian Games and to mark the 400th
anniversary of the city. Major refurbishment and redevelopment has
now been undertaken because it is the Colombian national stadium and
will be used one of the major venues for the Under 20’s World Cup.
The project specifications were prepared in detail by the Technical
Department of the Recreation and Sports Institute IDRD, in 2007 with
support and assistance from Sika Colombia. The construction and
refurbishment work was then scheduled to be completed in three
phases.
The refurbishment included the repair and upgrading of all of the
exposed horizontal stepped concrete terraces and the vertical concrete
façades.
The West Stand of the stadium also had to be extended and effectively
rebuilt, with a new avant-garde exposed concrete facade, which the
architect required to be protected with a lightfast, reflective white
coating.
Sika Solutions
The seating was removed from the stands to enable the horizontal
and vertical concrete surfaces to be mechanically prepared by blast
cleaning. This was followed by repair and levelling of the surfaces using
Sika acrylic polymer modified repair mortars. Then when hardened and
cured, the uniform surfaces were given durable protective coating
systems built-up as follows:
For the Terraces
Priming and sealing overall with Sikafloor ®-156 solvent free
epoxy, followed by a coat of Sikafloor®-400 N Elastic, polyurethane coating for the horizontal terrace steps, broadcast with antislip aggregate Sikadur®-510 and sealed with an additional coat of
Sikafloor®-400 N Elastic. Sikafloor®-363 polyurethane
was used as the top coat for the vertical risers between the terraces.
For the Exposed Stadium Façades
SikaColor, an acrylic resin based, anti-carbonation, lightfast, water
proof and decorative, protective coating, was used to protect and
enhance the new and existing exposed concrete facades, all completed
in accordance with the architects requirements.
