Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Asturias officially opened the thirtieth edition of ARCOmadrid yesterday, accompanied by Carlos Urroz, director of the fair, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, Mayor of Madrid, and Ángeles González-Sinde, Minister of Culture. During their tour of the art fair they stopped at various stands, including Juana Aizpuru (in photo), Gimpel Fils, Parra & Romero, the Focus Russia section and ABC. Juan Antonio Álvarez Reyes, Helga de Alvear, Manuel Borja-Villel and Agustín Pérez Rubio, among others, give their views on this big contemporary art event, where the change at the helm, the new layout of the space and the selection of galleries has left no one indifferent. Pérez Rubio, director of MUSAC, summed up his experience of ARCOmadrid this year: «there is a greater sense of optimism. The necessary consensus among gallerists, artists and museums to drive the fair forward seems to be there». In this regard, he underscores the closer ties the fair has made with Latin American art. For Helga de Alvear, the most important thing is that ARCOmadrid has managed to attract more foreign galleries, who have brought «wonderful» work, because, as she says, it raises the benchmark. Another of the gallerists at the fair, Miguel Ángel Sánchez, director of ADN, also highlighted the «fantastic selection of international galleries, showing the way forward». This year ARCOmadrid has two halls, one less than last year, something which the vast majority of artists, collectors, gallerists and art experts judged very positively. Juana de Aizpuru, ARCO’s first director, is an especially enthusiastic advocate because, as she maintains «it used to be an authentic nightmare». In the words of Javier Panera, director of DA2 in Salamanca, «the fact that there are less galleries, means that the works can be seen much better. There is less clutter». The Russian curator Daria Pyrkina, commissioned with choosing the eight galleries in the Focus Russia section, praised the breathing space and the width of the aisles, «giving a better view of the works. I’d say that, from a purely visual viewpoint, the presentation is simpler». Meanwhile, gallerist Soledad Lorenzo also applauded the reduction in halls: «For collectors and visitors, 04 Juan Antonio Álvarez Director del CAAC «Hay una gran expectación. «There is a great sense of expectation. Despite the current economic situation, it is a time of great opportunities, and a good moment to buy excellent pieces at affordable prices». the smaller space means greater comfort, and they are delighted that they can see everything in less time». Furthermore, with a life-long experience since childhood in art, this Santander-born gallerist added that she prefers fairs that are not so big, putting the emphasis instead on quality, «less space means a better selection». The Dutch art critic Ivo Bouwman underlines the «excellent layout of the galleries, located in good-sized halls». Javier Panera also had this to say with respect to the design: «the organisation is better thoughtout and less chaotic. It has managed to combine a rigorous selection of galleries with an improved layout and architecture of the fair». The new structure of the fair was a personal project of the management team, captained by Carlos Urroz. For the time being, he has reaped nothing but good reviews, praising his management and professionalism at the front of the fair. Carlos Guerrero, editor of ArteInformado, stated that with the change, «the galleries are Thomas Engelbert Director técnico de Manifesta 8 «Es muy importante la participación de jóvenes artistas que activan una nueva generación y mantienen vivo el mercado, no solo en la creación de obras, sino también en su compra-venta». «It is crucial to ensure the participation of young artists to activate a new generation and keep the market going, not just in terms of creating works, but also in buying and selling». The fair is well thought-out, both in the layout as well as the architecture». proving more collaborative». In the opinion of María Inés Rodríguez, chief curator at MUSAC, «so far the fair is working well, ARCOmadrid is growing with Urroz». The actual works of art, their quality and exhibition is another talking point among critics and collectors. Juan Antonio Álvarez, director of Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo, and a visitor at Hall 10, believes that «the average level is pretty good». He says that Opening is one of the best things at the fair, highlighting «the Sharon Art booth, works at Juana Aizpuru, or Antoni Muntadas’ work on the legacy of Picasso». Besides, he underscored the «notable» presence of eight galleries from Andalucia. Thomas Engelbert, technical director of Manifesta 8, was particularly pleased with the works in the ARCO 40 section: «this year there are many really exciting young artists. These are the ones who will keep the market alive, and not just on an aesthetic level». For Engelbert, a good example is the Raíña Lupa gallery. María Inés Rodríguez, believes that «the quality of the works on view is matched by something that is very important for the visitor, collector or gallerist, which are the debates with experts, bringing you into closer proximity with the fair. They make for a really rewarding exchange». Having said all that, and despite the success so far, ARCOmadrid is opening its doors to the general public today with the worldwide economic crisis still looming overhead, and for some experts, like Carlos Guerrero or Javier Panera, galleries are noticeably taking less risks with the works. «Because of the crisis gallerists have opted to bring what they consider to be a safe bet», the DA2 director declared. Less space, more quality, a notable presence of foreign galleries and a new director who has received the unanimous support of everyone directly involved in the fair, endorse a promising future for ARCOmadrid as a major player in the international contemporary art world. In the first two days, the foundation bought eight new pieces at the fair, including photographs by Gonzalo Puch and Jorge Yeregui, paintings by Philipp Fröhlich and sculptures by Sol Martínez. Helga de Alvear made her return to ARCOmadrid ushered in by the fair’s new director, Carlos Urroz. Helga de Alvear, one of Spain’s most important gallerists and collectors, successfully juggles selling while buying for her own collection. She started by selling L’Homme qui ne marche pas by Elmgreen & Dragset to a Belgian collector for €55,000. This was soon followed by the photograph No Global Tour by Santiago Sierra which ended in the hands of Fundación Masaveu for €25,000. Private collectors are also adding their grain of sand. At the Espacio Mínimo gallery, the artists Philip Jones and Antonio Montalvo set a pace of sales that had nothing to envy last year’s. In spite of the interest shown by collectors, he expects things to pick up at his gallery, Maisterravalbuena, in the next days with the arrival of a larger number of international buyers. A t the age of 30, Daria Pyrkina is more than just a young artist. She is the curator of exhibitions and public events at Moscow’s NCCA (National Centre for Contemporary Arts), FORO RUSIA «VISIONES CRÍTICAS» Daria Pyrkina Hoy. 18 – 19.30. Open to the public. and was commissioned with choosing the eight galleries to represent Russia, this year’s guest country at ARCOmadrid. – What was behind your selection of the eight galleries in FOCUS RUSSIA? – ARCOmadrid is not the place for a conventional curatorial approach. In this case, I am presenting artists through their galleries, and these are, broadly speaking, the most important ones in Russia, or at least the best established and well-known ones, such as XL, Aidan, Anna Nova, GMG... But I also wanted to choose younger, lesser known galleries in order to give them a push onto the wider international stage. – What did you mean when you said that the programme includes artists coming from a totally different socio-political situation? – I was talking about the various generations of art practitioners on view in FOCUS RUSSIA. Although the galleries do have some artists from the early conceptual generation, they mostly exhibit works by artists from the 1990s, the time of Perestroika. This was a highly significant process not just for the artists of the time, but also for the following generations. This kind of art doesn’t have that spirit of transgression. At ARCOmadrid you can find exciting initiatives to forge new systems of interrelations. – Where is Russian contemporary art at right now? – It’s going through pretty hard times. The market is developing little by little, but artists lend too much importance to the fact of being in the market, to making a profit. It often means that the actual content gets pushed to one side. – Do you mean that their greatest concern is making money? – Art is under too much pressure from market logic. This is further compounded by the scant tradition of contemporary art. You have to bear in mind that, until very recently, this language was banned and moved only in underground circles… In that regard, the general public still has to be won over. – Private collections and contemporary art museums have mushroomed in Russia. Do you feel that they are getting the necessary support? – The participation of private capital in contemporary art collections is fundamental. However, in my view, creating collections should not be the goal, at least not in the short term. What matters most right now is the work of the private foundations that lend their support to young artists. A type of infrastructure that, I’m sorry to say, is missing in Russia, in contrast with Spain, where there is a lot of support. – Should art have limits? Absolutely not. The art of the second half of the 20th century trespassed borders, broke with convention … Something that was a key strategy for the development of the avant-gardes and of conceptual art. – Do you think that young people are engaged with contemporary art? – I run the New Generation programme at NCCA, conceived to promote young art. I also take part as a curator at the International Biennale for Young Art, an ongoing project open to everyone, for which we receive an incredible amount of entries. – Do you view contemporary art as a good platform to air these conflicts? – Definitely. It’s the perfect platform. The problem is that many people don’t understand how artists express themselves, and worse, they don’t even try to. They see works that look odd to them, and they dismiss them as a joke. It is a matter of perception. Agustín Pérez Rubio is MUSAC’s director. It is also true that there are people who are not represented and artists that are not working with art galleries, instead working on the sidelines in a more experimental way. In the Ruinart space is a striking large sculpture belonging to the Fashion Art Institute Foundation, reproducing a two and a half metre high champagne bottle including the tools of the trade of a classical artist, such as paintbrushes and palette knives. Carved in wood, the work is attracting a lot of public attention thanks to its exuberant colour and sheer size. Apart from this sculpture, the artist, Rubén Fuentes, also designed a collection of 30 standard-size wooden bottles, also on display at the space of the French champagne brand to commemorate the fair’s 30th anniversary. The VIP Lounge was conceived to give visitors and guests a chance to meet and chat in a relaxed setting, have a quick snack or sip a cocktail at the BARVIP, have lunch at the RestauranteVIP with its interesting menu and selection of wines and spirits. The artist worked directly on the page of the newspaper, covering everything except for the names of the gangs and criminals. As Arróniz explains “the idea was to take an image accessible to anyone and turn it into a piece of art.” The main work, titled You’re alive because I didn’t kill you—is reproduced on the floor of the booth. The sentence, taken from a text message sent by the criminals, is painted in white, with the idea that it will be start to become more visible as the floor is dirtied by the shoes of the visitors passing through the booth. “In this way, the spectator plays an active part in the work” Arróniz claims. Even though he has been commissioned by a specific company, Rehberger maintains that he had total freedom to design the space, where he looked for a perfect combination and precision of the black and white lines and the various forms of bright colours like orange and yellow. Rehberger had already been to ARCOmadrid on other occasions, despite confessing that he is not too keen on art fairs. “To be honest, I usually hate them because you see too much art in one single space. The art is hanging like hams, and it becomes almost meaningless” he claimed. So, while he came to present his installation, Rehberger has done his best to avoid the stands. Digital communication is the focus of one of ARCOmadrid’s novelties for its thirtieth edition. The art fair has introduced a special app for smartphones and tablets with a complete range of information on prices, opening hours, plus a full list of galleries, artists and events taking place during the fair. The app also makes it easy to locate gallery booths on an interactive floor plan of Halls 8 and 10. Another useful feature is the possibility of visualising a catalogue of over 300 works on exhibit, which is being added to as the fair develops. Besides, it also recommends restaurants, bars and other leisure and entertainment options in Madrid, together with a selection of exhibitions on view in the city’s major museums and art centres during ARCOmadrid. The free software, developed by TF editores, can be downloaded during the fair at Apple Store (for iPhone and iPad) and at Android Market (for smartphones using the Android operating system). For the moment, the app is not available for Blackberries. Meanwhile, on ARCOmadrid’s webpage www.arco. ifema.es you can pay a virtual visit to the fair, explore the two exhibition halls, download a hand guide, buy tickets and browse the online catalogue. Speaking of the catalogue, the physical paper version, published by TF, is on sale at the fair for €40, or purchased jointly with admission to the fair for the special price of €66. Una historia sobre la vida de cuatro mujeres durante el golpe de estado de Irán en 1953 ARCOmadrid was chosen as the backdrop to present in Spain «Women Without Men» by Shirin Neshat. The film tells the story of four women whose lives intertwine in the midst of the social and political upheaval of the coup d’état in Iran in 1953 ADRIÁN DELGADO • MADRID W omen Without Men es la adaptación de la novela realista y mágica de la escritora Shahrnush Parsipur y el primer largometraje de la artista iraní Shirin Neshat.
