The Luis López Mesa School in Barrancabermeja was the only school outside Bogotá that
made it to the Top 10
Bogotá. December 17, 2015 --- José Sebastián Garzón, a 15-year old student in the ninth
grade at Colegio Nuevo Reino de Granada, came in first place in the fourth edition of the
Millionaire Exchange Contest for Schools, where ninth, tenth and eleventh-grade students
meet to learn about the securities market by using real information on the 24 stocks of
Colombia's main index, the COLCAP.
Sebastián had a return of 4.27% during the contest's ten trading sessions. This result is even
more meaningful considering that during the contest, between October 19 and 30, the COLCAP
dropped 2.28%.
Sebastian's victory consolidated the brilliant performance of the schools in Bogotá and the
surrounding area, which managed to make it to 9 out of the top 10 places, where the Luis
López Mesa School of Barrancabermeja was the only one from outside Bogotá to make it to
the ranking in seventh place. In previous editions of the contest, schools of Santander and
Antioquia had significant representation in the top 10.
"The students' response to the contest and their growing interest in learning more about the
securities market have driven us to go deeper into this type of financial education initiatives
that result in increasing knowledge of the securities market and, in turn, becoming recognized
as a key asset for the country's growth," said Adriana Cárdenas, the BVC's Education Manager.
In this edition, the first three places won, among other prizes, COP 10 million, COP 5 million
and COP 3 million, respectively. A total of 1,383 students took part in the contest from 77
schools of 13 departments in Colombia.
