Mines of Murcia Murcia lies on the south-east coast of Spain and the capital city is Cartagena. The surrounding country has been extensively mined for lead since the Roman times, with the greatest period of explotation being from the mid-19th Century to the 1950s. Decline then set in and the last mines closed in the 1990s. There are two main areas of mining at Mazarron and Sierra Minera as shown on the maps below. Perhaps due to the lack of a local steel industry and the hot dry weather, many of the mining remains are still in situ. In recent times mining museums have been set up at Matildes Mine and Parque Minero la Union and it is possible to go underground at the latter. During 2008, a group of mining historians visited the area and the photographs in this website are the result.
