BAPTISM OF THE LORD
Did Jesus need to be baptized by John the Baptist? Yes.
Jesus said so himself; unless you don’t believe the gospel we have just heard.
Jesus told John the Baptist to “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all
righteousness.”
Jesus clearly desired to be baptized by John, but not just for the sake of being
seen at the Jordan River by the crowds that were there and not for his own
personal gain. His motive is clearly stated: “…for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all
righteousness.”
Jesus is not speaking only about himself; he refers to “us.”…meaning John the
Baptist and himself. Jesus makes it clear that as he is about to begin his public
ministry, the ministry of Jesus is not about “me” but about “us.” If you pay close
attention to the Gospels you will see this theme of Jesus’ mission and ministry
repeated time and time again.
Jesus’ mission and ministry always focused on the “us” and not the “me.” When
we were small children our focus was centered on the “me” and there is nothing
wrong with this; it is only natural and it is the way we all started out. As we grew
toward adulthood we learned that we weren’t the only one who needed
attention; there were others in our world and we all needed attention.
Jesus has given us all the attention we could ever ask for from anybody.
He has focused his attention on us; offering us the promise and the hope of
eternal life with him in heaven. May God grant us the grace to follow the example
of Jesus. Life is not about “me” and my salvation. It’s about “us” and our
salvation.

Jesús dijo lo mismo; a no ser que usted no crean el evangelio que acabamos de
escuchar. Jesús le dijo a Juan el Bautista para "Deja ahora, porque así conviene
que cumplamos toda justicia."
Jesús deseaba claramente ser bautizado por Juan, pero no por el simple hecho de
ser visto en el río Jordán por las multitudes que estaban allí y no para su propio
beneficio personal. Su motivo se expresa claramente: "... porque así conviene que
cumplamos toda justicia."
Jesús no está hablando sólo de sí mismo; se refiere a "nosotros" es decir, Juan el
Bautista y él mismo. Jesús deja claro que cuando está a punto de comenzar su
ministerio público, el ministerio de Jesús no se trata de "yo", sino de "nosotros".
Si usted presta atención a los Evangelios usted verá este tema de la misión y el
ministerio de Jesús y el tiempo se repite de nuevo.
La misión y ministerio de Jesús siempre se enfocaron en el "nosotros" y no en el
“yo”. Cuando éramos niños pequeños nuestro enfoque se centra en el "yo" y no
hay nada malo con este "yo"; es natural y es la forma en que todos empezamos. A
medida que creció hacia la edad adulta nos enteramos de que no éramos el único
que necesitaba atención; había otros en nuestro mundo y que todos necesitan
atención.
Jesús nos ha dado toda la atención que podríamos pedir a alguien mas.
Ha centrado su atención en nosotros; nos ofrece la promesa y la esperanza de la
vida eterna con él en el cielo. Que Dios nos conceda la gracia de seguir el ejemplo
de Jesús. La vida no se trata de "yo" y mi salvación. Se trata de "nosotros" y
nuestra salvación.
