Trade Among NAFTA Partners
• By the end of 2008, trilateral trade in North America
increased 5.6% with regard to 2007, totaling $944.9
billion USD.
• The Mexico-Canada trade recorded $26.2 billion USD,
9.0% higher than the figure shown in the same period
in 2007. This value is almost six times higher than the
trade number obtained in 1993 ($4.1 billion USD); that
is an average annual growth rate of 13.3% in the
NAFTA age, making of Mexico the Canada’s third trade
partner.
• As for the Bilateral trade between Mexico and United
States, it increased 4.9%, resulting in $368.5 billion
USD during 2008.

• Al cierre de 2008, el Comercio Trilateral en América del
Norte aumentó 5.6% con respecto a 2007, ubicándose en
US$ 944,891 mdd (millones de dólares).
• El Comercio México–Canadá registró US$ 26,223 mdd,
monto 9.0% superior al valor observado al cierre de 2007.
Este valor equivale a más de seis veces el comercio
registrado en 1993 (US$ 4,056 mdd) y a una tasa de
crecimiento anual promedio de 13.3% en la era TLCAN,
permitiendo a México ubicarse como tercer socio
comercial de Canadá.
• Por su parte, el Comercio Bilateral México-EE.UU. se
incrementó en 4.9% para ubicarse en US$ 368,530 mdd
durante 2008.
Mexico – Canada Trade
• In 2008, the Mexico-Canada trade recorded a surplus
in favour of Mexico for $7.3 billion USD
• This surplus is $784 million USD lower than the
recorded during the same period in 2007 mainly due to
the significant increase of Mexican imports of Canadian
rape or colza seeds, which increased 96% by the end of
the year, reaching a value of $871.2 million USD (what
represents the 9.2% of total imports).

registró un superávit a favor de México por US$ 7,322
mdd.
• Este superávit es US$ 784 mdd inferior al observado en
el mismo lapso de 2007, resultado principalmente del
fuerte crecimiento de las importaciones de México de
semillas de colza, las cuales crecieron 96% al cierre del
año para alcanzar un valor de US$ 871.2 mdd (que
representan el 9.2% de las importaciones totales).
Canadian Exports to Mexico
• In 2008, Mexico kept its position as Canada’s fifth
largest market (2.1% of total market), exceeded by
Canadian sales to the United States, United Kingdom,
Japan and China.
• The value, exports from Canada to Mexico reached
$9.5 billion USD, 704% and 18.5% higher than sales
carried out in 1993 and 2007, respectively.
• The average annual growth rate of exports of Canada
into Mexico for the period of 1993 - 2008 was 14.9%,
the highest in trade among NAFTA partners.
• As for total value, the main Canadian products
imported by Mexico corresponded to rape or colza
seeds (9.2%), vehicles with cubic capacity higher than
1,500cc (7.7%), autoparts (more than 7%), aircrafts
(3.4%), wheat (2.0%) and mobile phones (1.7%).
Other products imported by Mexico were: chemicals,
steel bars, trucks and bulldozers, and supplies for the
electronics sector.
Mexican Exports to Canada
• In 2008 Mexico kept its position as the third greatest
supplier to the Canadian market by capturing the 4.1%
of the imports Canadian market, participation only
exceeded by imports from the United States (52.8%)
and China (9.8%).

• En 2008, México se ubicó como el quinto mercado de
exportación para Canadá (2.1% del mercado total),
siendo superado por las ventas realizadas a EE.UU., Reino
Unido, Japón y China.
• El valor, las exportaciones de Canadá a México alcanzó
los US$ 9,540 mdd, monto 704% y 18.5% superior a las
ventas realizadas en 1993 y 2007, respectivamente.
• La tasa de crecimiento anual promedio de las
exportaciones de Canadá a México para el período 1993 2008 se ubicó en 14.9%, la más alta del comercio entre
los países del TLCAN.
• En relación al valor total, los principales productos
canadienses importados por México correspondieron a
semillas de colza (9.2%), automóviles de cilindrada
superior a 1,500 cc (7.7%), autopartes (más de 7%),
aeronaves (3.4%), trigo (2.0%) y teléfonos celulares
(1.7%). Otros productos importados por México fueron:
químicos, barras de acero, camiones y excavadoras, e
insumos para el sector electrónico.

• En el 2008 México se ubicó como el tercer proveedor de
Canadá al capturar el 4.1% del mercado canadiense de
importaciones; porcentaje superado sólo por las
importaciones provenientes de EE.UU. (52.8%) y China
(9.8%).

consisted of engines and auto-parts (11.2%), colour
T.V. sets (11.2%), vehicles with an engine higher than
1,500cc (9.3%), petroleum (5.4%), gas and diesel
trucks (4.3%), computers (2.5%), gold (1.8%), and
tobacco (1.46%). Other products exported by Mexico
were: electronics components and equipment and
refrigerators.
• Al cierre del año, las ventas de productos mexicanos a
Canadá sumaron US$ 16,773 mdd, monto 482%
superior respecto a 1993 y 4.3% mayor a las ventas
registradas en 2007.
• La tasa de crecimiento anual promedio de las
exportaciones de México a Canadá para el período 1993
– 2008 se ubicó en 12.5%.
• Los principales productos de exportación de México a
Canadá correspondieron a motores y autopartes
(11.2%), televisores a color (11.2%), automóviles con
motor superior a 1,500 cc (9.3%), petróleo (5.4%),
camiones a gas y diesel (4.3%), computadoras (2.5%),
oro (1.8%) y cigarros (1.46%). Otros productos

Inversión de Canadá en México
During the last fifteen years, Canadian foreign direct
investment (FDI) has been a key factor for the
integration of our productive sectors:
Durante los últimos quince años la inversión extranjera
directa (IED) de Canadá ha sido un elemento clave
para la integración de los sectores productivos de
ambos países:
• From January 1994 to December 2008, Canada’s
cumulative FDI in Mexico reached $9.3 billion USD,
becoming the fourth largest foreign investor in Mexico.
In 2008, Canada was the second largest foreign
investor after United States.
• According to the Ministry of Economy, on December
2008, 2,092 firms were registered in Mexico as having
Canadian capital.
These results demonstrate the high confidence that the
NAFTA’s legal framework has granted to Canadian
investors to operate in Mexico.

encontraban operando en México con participación de
capital canadiense.
Estos indicadores comprueban el alto grado de
confianza que el marco legal del TLCAN ofrece a los
inversionistas canadienses para operar en México.

IED acumulada de Canadá en México alcanzó los
US$9,264 millones de dólares, lo que lo ubicó como el
quinto país inversionista en México. En el 2008 Canadá
ocupo la segunda posición como investionista en México
después de Estados Unidos.
