“What an event!”
These were just a few of the comments made by the attendees of the
2010 Celebrando Austin Awards Banquet. Together with 900 attendees,
Celebrando Austin truly celebrated all that Austin is by highlighting the
area’s accomplishments while honoring award winners, inducting the
2010 GAHCC Board of Directors and recognizing the accomplishments of
Hispanics in the Austin Community.
Crowds walked into the Hilton’s Grand Ballroom led by the ladies in red, the
all female mariachi, Las Alteñas. Honorary co-chairs Congressman Lloyd
Doggett and Police Chief Art Acevedo began the evening and then turned
the reins over to KEYE-TV’s Ron Oliveira who gracefully emceed the evening’s
events. The night’s celebration was highlighted with tango, salsa and chacha dancers who spun, dipped and sashayed across the dance floor. After
a delicious dinner of filet mignon, the 2010 Award Winners were presented.
Notably, Gilbert M. Martinez won the Lifetime Achievement Award for his 40+
years of service in Central Texas. Rounding out the evening, the GAHCC leadership made its official transition to its new Chair, Pilar Sanchez, and inducted
the 21-member 2010 Board of Directors.
Fireworks, mariachis and tuxedos are what attendees will immediately remember when they look
back at the first Celebrando Austin event. But with a little thought, they will recall the recognition
of leaders in the Hispanic community who have shaped Austin into what it is today. This is a true
celebration of Austin.

Estos son algunos de los comentarios de los asistentes al Banquete de Premios Celebrando Austin
2010. Junto a 900 asistentes, Celebrando Austin realmente festejó toda la esencia de Austin al enaltecer
los logros obtenidos en el área al otorgarle premios
de honor a los ganadores, instalar la Junta Directive
2010 de GAHCC y reconocer los logros de los hispanos de la comunidad de Austin.
Los numerosos y distinguidos asistentes entraron al Hilton’s Grand Ballroom encabezados por las damas en
rojo, el mariachi femenino, Las Alteñas. Los co-presidentes honorarios Congressman Lloyd Doggett y Police
Chief Art Acevedo proclamaron el inicio del evento y luego le dieron las riendas a Ron Oliveira de KEYE-TV,
quien sirvió de maestro de ceremonias. Durante la celebración se destacó la participación de los bailarines de
tango, salsa y cha-cha–cha quienes giraron y se deslizaron al vaivén de la música alrededor de la pista de baile.
Después de disfrutar una deliciosa cena de filet mignon, se presentaron los ganadores de los premios 2010. Se

Williamson County Summit a Success!

On March 12th, the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
(GAHCC) kicked off the first-ever Williamson County Small Business
& Education Summit in Round Rock, Texas. In partnership with the
regional Chambers, the event was sold out with over 350 registered
attendees from the Northern Travis and Williamson County area.
As Master of Ceremonies, Luis Patiño, General Manager of Univision
TV, welcomed attendees and began the Opening Ceremonies by
introducing the Stony Point Jr. ROTC Color Guard in the Presentation of Colors and presenting Haide Gonzales of Round Rock High
School who performed the National Anthem.
Providing an inspirational message, Texas Secretary of State Esperanza “Hope” Andrade, addressed how “Small Business is Big Business” and discussed the importance of small business to the Texas’
economy. Closing the Opening Ceremonies was Round Rock City
Council Member Carlos Salinas who provided an insightful presentation on The Shifting of Williamson County Demographics.
Attendees then had an opportunity to participate in the morning
breakout sessions. The first session, Education in the Region, explored the importance of public education relative to small business and economic development. Leading the session was Dr. Jesus Chavez, Superintendent of Round Rock Independent School
District and Hannah Gourgey of E3 Alliance.
The second session, Small Business Opportunities in Williamson
County, provided tips on how to do business with larger organizations affecting Williamson County. The session was moderated by
Stephanie Richmond of Richmond International Connections and
the panel included: Jesus Mantas of IBM, Ramiro Flores of Round
Rock ISD, Bill VanKampen of Walmart, and Mark Jones of Texas Department of Transportation.
With a focus on Education, the luncheon began with Patiño introducing Pilar Sanchez, GAHCC Board of Directors Chair. Sanchez addressed the importance of the GAHCC’s partnership with the surrounding Chambers and the GAHCC’s vision. She also introduced,
Commissioner of Higher Education, Dr. Raymund A. Paredes who
keynoted the luncheon. Joining us at the luncheon were students
from the region’s School Districts who provided testimonies on
how business relates to their education. Students included: Astrid
Villalpando of Cedar Park High School, Tania Tome of Connally High
School, Naveed Hosseinmardi of Round Rock High School.
After the luncheon, attendees had the opportunity to attend the
afternoon breakout sessions. The first session, Small Business in
the Community, covered the importance of small businesses working with the community. Moderating the session was Nyle Maxwell,
Former Mayor of Round Rock and Principal of Nyle Maxwell Family of Dealerships, joining him on the panel was Tom Ramsey of
Snappy Snacks, Jon Sloan of First Texas Bank in Round Rock and
Dr. Gwendolyn Webb-Hasan of the Texas A&M University and David
Davenport of Capital Area Food Bank of Texas.
The second breakout session, Access to Capital for Small Business,
provided information on how to prep for a bank loan and discussed
alternative funding solutions. The session was moderated by Cole
Harmonson of Far West Capital and panelists included: Adeline Rem
of Celtic Bank, Tanya Ladha of PeopleFund, Hall Martin of Austin
Entrepreneur Network, Monica Medina of Frost Bank and Nacole
Thompson of Wells Fargo.
The event ended on a high note at the Networking Reception.

Hispanic Austin Leadership Graduation – Your Vote Counts

The Greater Austin Community is invited to the Graduation of the
Hispanic Austin Leadership (HAL) Class of 2010. The Graduation
will take place at the Mexican American Cultural Center from 6:008:00 p.m. on April 29, 2010.

de la Clase del 2010 de Hispanic Austin Leadership. La graduación se dará
cita en Mexican American Cultural Center de 6:00-8:00 p.m. el 29 de abril
del 2010.
These 19 up-and-coming leaders trained, collaborated and honed
their leadership skills over the last 8 months. Not only have they
spent one full day a month focusing on different hot button issues
in Central Texas, they have committed themselves to their community and peers by working on a team project.
This is where, YOU, the community, play a role at HAL Graduation! Each team will have 10 minutes to present their project findings. We want you to vote on your favorite project. The topics are
Healthcare, Education, Financial Stability, Civic Engagement and
Environment. Last year’s winner was the Healthcare team who focused on teen pregnancy. They created a PSA that gave a shocking
representation of how a child can affect the life of a teen.
On April 29th you can hear how this year’s HAL class is making
strides to positively impact the Greater Austin Community!
Tickets to HAL Graduation cost $25 and can be purchased at www.

Estos 19 líderes prometedores se capacitaron, colaboraron y perfeccionaron sus destrezas de liderazgo durante los últimos 18 meses. No solo
han pasado todo un día al mes enfocándose en diferentes temas “importantes” para Central Texas, sino que ellos se han comprometido con su
comunidad y sus colegas al trabajar en un proyecto en equipo.
Es ahí donde USTEDES, la comunidad, juegan un rol en la Graduacion
de HAL. Cada equipo tendrá 10 minutos para presentar los hallazgos
de su proyecto. Deseamos que usted vote por su proyecto favorito. Los
temas son Healthcare, Education, Financial Stability, Civic Engagement
y Environment. El equipo ganador del año pasado fue el de Healthcare,
quienes se enfocaron en el embarazo entre las adolescentes. Ellos crearon un PSA lo cual les mostró una impactante representación de cómo
un niño puede afectar la vida de una adolescente.
El 29 de abril se podrá enterar de los adelantos que ha logrado la clase
HAL de este año para crear un impacto positivo en la comunidad metropolitana de Austin.

Border Media announces Fred Cantú’s return to radio

Border Media is proud to introduce their newest radio co-host,
Fred Cantú. Fred will be joining Sammy Allred as part of the weekday show on 98.9 The Big Talker from 12:00-1:00 pm. Fred and
Sammy worked together previously when they co-hosted a morning show on 1560 KTXZ in the early and mid 80’s.

A native Texan born in Brownsville, Fred has been on the air in Austin for 30 years. He started by working his way through college on

President of Austin Market. “Fred has been a fixture in Austin community since 1990, and we’re confident that he is a great addition.
He is well known in the Austin community and has great relationships with many businesses and organizations. Fred will be a great

We think it's unfortunate that such unsubstantiated rumors are
spread.
On immigration reform, our position is clear. We believe reform is
needed. We are committed to working with all interested parties
– lawmakers, employers, and consumers – to make comprehensive reform a reality.
