Catch a
Word
Make learning to read a game and your child will feel more positive about reading. Bring this book to
life by catching letters of the alphabet and making a word. Your child can talk about the letters, make
his name and form a word.
What your child will do
Catch letters and make words or stories with the letters.
What you need
•The book - Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin, Jr.
•Magnetic alphabet letters
•Plastic pail
•Two or three foot long sticks
•String
•Magnets
•Cookie sheets
What you do
1. Make a fishing pole out of a stick, string and a magnet.
2. Put the alphabet letters in a plastic pail.
3. Throw the end of your fishing line towards the letters and try to catch one.
4. Name the letters that you catch.
5. Place the letters on the cookie sheet to make a word.
Questions to ask
Which letter do you want to try to catch? Did you see the letters of your name in the book? Did you
hear any words in the story that rhyme or sound the same? What did you notice about the words that
rhyme? Are some of the letters the same?
For parents
Playing a game that teaches reading skills will enable your child to feel more excited and positive about
learning to read. This game will encourage him to practice eye-hand-coordination which can help when
he is learning to hold a book, turn the pages of a book and follow the words across the page when he
reads. Making words with the letters he catches will add to his vocabulary and build his confidence in
himself as a reader.
