St. Joseph’s Catholic Church August 2, 2015 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners and Friends: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.” John 6:26 The crowd in today’s gospel goes looking for Jesus expecting to see more miracles performed and an endless supply of food for them to eat. They do not realize that Jesus is not talking about their physical being. He is talking about the spiritual lives of the crowds. Our society today resembles the crowd that was following Jesus. Society puts a huge emphasis on being entertained, looking good, and feeling good, but forgets that the spiritual self is more important than the physical self. When the spirit is sick, the sickness can be manifested in a physical illness. Look at the “beautiful and famous” in our society: they have everything they can want: all the money, fame, power, and beauty. But how many times do we hear about them having to go to rehab because of drugs or alcohol abuse? What they are missing is the food that Jesus promises us in today’s gospel. The Bread of Life! The nourishment of our souls not just our bodies. Physical beauty is fleeting and will soon fail but the soul is eternal. At Mass we are fed both with the Word and with real bread. Just as Jesus taught the people nourishing their souls, we too get nourished through the liturgy of the Word and we are fed with the Bread of Life when we celebrate the Eucharist. Jesus gave us both the Word and the Eucharist to feed and sustain us in difficult times. Come celebrate and be fed!! Question for the week: As you come to Mass what stops you from being fed by both the word and the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist? Live Jesus in your hearts!!!! Diácono Ron Today we thank God for Deacon Ron’s two years of dedicated ministry with our parish. He was ordained here on June 7, 2013. His presence in ministry was able to touch many lives. Let’s let him know how he made a difference. May this time of transition in his diaconal ministry to St. Paul's be a blessing for him. The only group shot already done is the Choir. That Sunday is also an RCIA Rite of Welcome Sunday at 11 AM so we shall be having luncheon after Mass. Please remember to prepare some food to share as we welcome newcomers to our parish family. To those who have ben so especially faithful this summer in your contributions, because things have been so financially “tight” and we are almost scraping by! Our Finance Council meeting with our Diocesan auditor went very well even though we only barely were “in the black” this year. This September will be Stewardship Month and we will be hearing more about exactly where we stand with a presentation of the financial year in review on September 19-20. Gracias, gracias!
