Controversial and iconic film director
D irector, Producer and Actor Mel Gibson was born in
Peekskill, New York, in 1956. He was the sixth child of
Hutton Gibson and the second of Patricia Reilly, both of
Irish descent. At the age of 12, he moved with his family
to West Pymble, Sydney, Australia in 1968, where he
began his career in the entertainment industry. He later
worked packing orange juice, and he completed high
school with much effort in New South Wales. He
participated in television contests. He attended the National Institute of Dramatic
Art in Sydney in the 70s. In 1977, he debuted in "Summer City," shortly after joining
the Australian Southern Theatre Company. In the 80s. Gibson gained some fame
with director George Miller. He began a career that spanned decades but was
internationally acknowledge for the film "The Road Warrior" in 1981 and for the
successful film "Galipoli" in the same year. He keep his career with action-packed
films, including all three in the "Lethal Weapon" series (1987, 89, and 92). One of
his first launch in the U.S. was with the film "The River" in 1984 and the third part of
"Mad Max" in 1985. That same year, he was named by People magazine as "the
sexiest man alive." His directorial debut was with "The Man without a Face" in 1993
and then in 1995 with "Braveheart" as director, producer, and protagonist, a film
that earned him an Oscar and a Golden Globe that year and the following year. In
2004, Gibson directed and produced "The Passion of the Christ," a film that
generated significant controversy and media attention. Because of this, he confront
much review and censorship in some countries.
Lover of extreme sports, in 2006 he was arrested for driving under the influence
and made anti-Semitic comments publicly. In the same year, he directed the film
'Apocalypto.' After several legal issues and controversial statements that affected
his career, Gibson reapply with his acting role in the film The Beaver in 2010,
directed by Jodie Foster, and returned as a director after 10 years of lack with the
film 'Hacksaw Ridge' in 2016. He had his ninth child with writer Rosalind Ross on
January 20, 2017.
