B. MY FAVORITE DAY

MY FAVORITE DAY
My favorite day of the week is Saturday because it’s the first day of the weekend!
I get up very early during the week, so on Saturday it’s nice to get up late, and I always stay in
bed until about 10.30. Then I usually go shopping with a friend. In Mexico, stores are
sometimes closed on Sundays, so Saturday is the best day for shopping. We don’t always buy
anything, but we have fun just looking.
I often have lunch with my mother and brother. It’s great because my mom is a really good
cook and she always makes things we like, and my brother and I have time to talk about our
week. After lunch, I sometimes study from about 4:00 to 6:00, especially if I have exams.
In the evening, I usually go out with my friends. We often go to the movies, and then we have
a pizza or tacos. I never go to bed before 1:00 or sometimes later.
2. You are going to write an article for a magazine called My favorite day. Write four
paragraphs. First, look at the questions and make notes of what you can say.

Schoolchildren in China learn that the opening
of the East-West trading route popularly known
as the silk road occurred in139 B.C. When
Zhang Qian, the Chinese ambassadoradventurer, travelled westward across the
Pamirs, a mountain range in Central Asia. He
was the first known Chinese person to do so.
The term ‘silk road’ was actually first used late
in the nineteenth century by a German
geographer, Baron Ferdinand von Richthofen
(1833-1905). Silk was not the only material that
passed along these routes. Other goods are
known to have included ceramics, glass,
precious gems and livestock.

Stone Tower may be, it seems likely that
some form trade was taking place in this
region millennia before more formal
recorded trade took place.
On the other hand, it is difficult to believe
that people in those times were able to travel
such huge distances. Travelling from West
to East, the trader first had to cross the
Pamir Plateau, through the 20,000-foothigh mountains. If the weather in the
mountains had been kind and the journey
undertaken in the right season, the eastward
bound traveller would then finally arrive at
the Kashgar, a logical place for trade and

However, there are reasons to think that these
roads were being used centuries, probably even
millennia, earlier than Zhang’s expedition. In
Roman times, Pliny the Elder reported a ‘stone
tower’ which he said existed on the Pamir
Plateau where goods had been traditionally
exchanged between traders from the East and
the West. In the early second century, Maës
Titianus, an ancient Roman-Macedonian
traveller, actually reported reaching this
famous Stone Tower, but its exact location
remains uncertain. According to one theory, it
was at Tashkurgan in the Pamirs. (The word
‘Tashkurgan’ actually means ‘stone tower’ or
‘stone fortress’ in the Uyghur language).
Scholars today, however, believe that its
location was probably somewhere in the
rest, where they could exchange horses or
camels and then start on the return journey
back over the mountains before the winter
snows started.
It is unlikely that in these earlier times
traders or travellers from Kashgar, as they
would have had to go round the Taklamakan
Desert. Going through it was not an option
as its name suggests: it literally means ‘Go
in and you won’t come out’. Beyond this
desert, there still would have remained eight
hundred miles of a dangerous journey
before they would have found the first true
signs of Chinese civilization.

Is this the end of the High Street?
Take a walk down any ‘High Street’, normally places full of shops, and you’ll notice
signs that all is not well: they will say ‘To Let’.
The High Street faces real competition from out-of-town retail parks and the steady
growth of supermarkets, both in number and in size. There is also the growing trend for
people to shop online, combined with a reduction in many families’ finances which has
affected customer confidence.
Retailing (the sale of goods from a fixed location) is changing too: shopping is becoming
a leisure activity as much as a necessity, along with the rise of home delivery services
saving time and journeys. Convenience is a powerful motivator for shoppers’ behavior.
Is the traditional High Street dying out?
During the last two years, independent retailers have struggled more than the chain stores.
Research suggests over 12,000 independent stores closed in 2009. Economies of scale (it
is cheaper to buy stock in bulk, so big shops can change lower prices) are one part of the
issue.

Supermarkets have a stronger control over the supply chain and can manipulate prices
more effectively. As a result of the decline in smaller stores, there are now many empty
shops in most town centers, some of which have been vacant for some time, and have
whitewashed windows. What impact do they have on the overall ‘feel’ of the town for
visitors and residents?
More importantly, how does the loss of a familiar shop which has perhaps served decades
of local residents affect people at a time when so many other familiar aspects of daily
life are under threat? When a shopping mall is being planned, it is very important to
secure the key ‘anchor’ tenants: the big names that can guarantee customers through the
doors. Is the disappearance of these familiar local shops and small department stores like
losing a link with the past?
The growth of CCTV cameras, use of private security firms and blurring of public and
private land has also been an issue in cities such as Exeter. This can result in young
people feeling that they are being victimized and forced out of city centers.
Another feature of many city centers is that they are beginning to look very similar to
each other. The New Economics Foundation introduced the term ‘clone town’ in a report
published in 2004. This suggests that many High Streets have few individual
characteristics – the same shops can be seen in most towns. This was also followed up
by a report in 2010, which identified Cambridge as the most ‘cloned’ city in the UK: one
with very few independent stores in the center.
Vacant shops are another issue for town centers. These can end up as charity shops, ‘popup’ shops (especially around Christmas) or attract vandals and graffiti. Some cities such
as Portsmouth have made an effort to revamp empty store-fronts to improve those areas
where they are found. This is important for cities which attract large numbers of tourists,
such as Bath, York and Chester.
Services are perhaps more resilient to these changes, particularly those that offer
something that is not available online. As one person commented: ‘You can’t have your
hair cut online …’ – well, not yet anyway. This partly explains the growth of coffee shops
and nail bars in some town centers, which are going against the general trend.
Finally, out on the edges of our towns, the supermarkets continue to grow – they’ve got
the town center surrounded. A report published in late 2010 said that around 55p of every
£1 that we spend is spent in supermarkets, and there have been a large number of planning
application for further stores.

A. Many students in the UK take a gap year after school and before going to university. In
fact about 250 000 do every year. Most of them want to combine travel with making
money or doing voluntary work. But whatever their reasons, students need to think

Jack works in a bank. It’s in the city centre so he drives to work, but if the weather’s nice, he
sometimes walks. He has lunch with colleagues. I have lunch at home; I make something
simple because we usually have a big meal in the evening for dinner. And of course, Simon
and Julia have lunch at college.
After college, Simon usually goes to the gym and Julia sometimes plays chess with a friend.
My husband often goes shopping on the way home and buys something for dinner, and I

usually clean the house and then I often read the newspaper, or sometimes, if I have time, I
phone a friend for a chat.
We prepare dinner together. Jack’s an excellent cook. Simon and Julia like cooking too. I

basketball at the sports centre. But Simon usually takes the bins out and Julia usually does the
washing up. Later, before we go to bed, Jack and I watch TV for a while, usually with Simon,

types of accommodation available to international students: college halls of residence, private
houses or flats, and host families.
A. College halls of residence
There are three halls of residence on the college campus. Tulip Hall and Rose Hall have

are shared bathrooms and a shared kitchen. In Holly Hall, the rooms also have their own

Exercise 3.
This is a large detached house in a quiet street close to the centre of the village. You can walk
to schools and shops, and the train station is only one and a half kilometres away. Last year,
there was some building work which made the study and the dining room bigger, and the
owners made the attic into an extra bedroom, so the total area of the house is now about 150
square metres; before it was only 120 square metres.
The house has four bedrooms so it’s a good size for a family with children. The largest
bedroom has a private bathroom. One of the other bedrooms has a private shower room and
the other two bedrooms have lots of cupboards. On the ground floor, apart from the hall, the
study and the dining room, there’s a lounge, and a very big kitchen. There isn’t a large garden
at the front of the house, but there’s a very pleasant, large, sunny garden at the back of the
house where you can have barbecues in the summer. You can get to the garden through glass
doors from the lounge. There’s no garage, but there’s enough space to park two cars on the
road at the front of the house.
The owners have spent a lot of money on the house over the years and kept it in very good
condition, so they’re hoping to sell it for about 350,000 euros. I agree, and I think this is a
very good price …

Susan: I’m fine, thanks. And how are you? How’s your holiday?
Peter: It’s fantastic. I’m having a wonderful time! I’m staying with my friends at a guest
house – it’s close to the activity center and it’s cheaper than a hotel. It’s comfortable, but the
food’s not very good! But the staff are very friendly!
Susan: And what about the activities?
Peter: Every morning, we get up early and we usually go to the center. John and Steven are

Exercise 3.
The food in Turkey is very good, especially the fish and the mezze, and I like to try traditional
dishes when I’m on holiday. And there are lots of traditional dishes in the different parts of the
country.
I went to Morocco last year for the first time for three years. In the past, I went more often. It’s
a beautiful country, but the main reason was that my grandmother lives there.
When I was a child, we went to Italy quite often and stayed in a hotel by the sea. But two years
ago I went to study. I’m an art student and with so many famous painters, Italy’s a fantastic
country to study Art History.
The weather in Thailand is fantastic! At least on the islands and parts of the coast, and that’s
great for me, because my favorite type of holiday is just being on the beach, and swimming in
the sea.
The first time I went to Russia, I visited the famous art galleries in St Petersburg. But this year
I went to Moscow on a language exchange and stayed with a host family. My Russian is much
better now!
A lot of people don’t know that Spain has lots of mountains. It’s not just a place to go for a
beach holiday, or to eat traditional food or go to museums. It’s one of the best places in Europe
for mountain climbing. I went there about five years ago.
Exercise 4
I like all kinds of holidays. Usually, I go on long beach holidays with my friends, and two years
ago we went on an adventure holiday. Another time we went on a sailing holiday. But last
year we had less time, so we decided to go on a short city break. It was more expensive than a
beach holiday, but we had a wonderful time.
We went to Paris. We couldn’t afford a hotel so we thought about staying with a host family,
but then we decided to stay in a small guesthouse. It was very comfortable, but it was a long
way from the city centre. We chose it because it was cheap. And the public transport in Paris
is good, so we moved around very easily.

On the first day we went to the center and visited the Louvre museum. We waited for over an
hour to buy tickets and there were lots of people, but we really enjoyed looking at all the famous
paintings. We wanted to visit the Pompidou Centre too, but we didn’t have time because there’s
so much to see in the Louvre. In the evening, we thought about going to the Eifel Tower, but
we were too tired! So we went there – and to the Pompidou Centre – on the second day. And
in the evening we went to a typical restaurant as we wanted to try some traditional French food.
It wasn’t very expensive and I liked the food. It was delicious! And the service was very good
too.
On the final day, we went on a day trip to visit the Palace of Versailles, near Paris. We thought
about hiring a car, but as it was too expensive, we went by train. It was quicker than the bus.
The palace is very famous and it’s quite beautiful. There are wonderful gardens where we
walked and relaxed in the sunshine and rode bicycles around the fountains.
Our holiday was a very short, city break so on the fourth day we travelled home. For me, this
was a very different holiday, but it was one of the best holidays I’ve had because I visited so
many famous places for the first time. Paris is an expensive city, and like most big cities it isn’t
very clean, but it is a great place for a city break.

Exercise 5.
Paella is one of the most famous dishes from Spain. It comes from Valencia in the south east
of the country. The main ingredient is rice. Rice grows in the Valencia area. Traditional paella
is made with rabbit, but now most people make it with chicken and seafood.
I love paella because it makes me think of home and the sun and the sea! And it’s a wonderful
dish to share with family and friends. It’s not a dish to eat alone!
It’s quite a cheap dish to make. These are the ingredients you need: chicken, seafood – prawns
and squid for example – oil, onions, peppers, tomatoes, green beans, garlic, and saffron, which
is a very expensive ingredient that gives the dish flavor and a beautiful golden color – you only
need a very small bit. You also need to add a little salt, and stock, which is a kind of sauce that
is flavored with chicken and vegetables. And of course, most importantly, you need some rice.
You also need a special, wide pan, for making the paella.
First, cut the chicken into pieces and chop the onions, peppers, tomatoes and garlic. Heat the
oil in the pan and when it’s hot, add the chicken pieces. Fry the chicken for a few minutes until
the pieces are golden brown, then add the onions, peppers, tomatoes and garlic and fry all the
ingredients for a few more minutes. Next add the saffron, the rice and the salt and mix
everything together. When the stock boils, cook slowly until the chicken and the rice are nearly
done, then add the seafood and the green beans; you may need a little more stock. Cook for a
few more minutes and finally, taste and add more salt if you wish. But not too much! Enjoy!

people have already phoned in to our program about jobs. So let’s make a start. The first
person waiting to speak is Hamish. Hi, Hamish.
Hamish: Hello, Jane.

Hamish: Yeah, I’m 18 years old and I’m still at school.
