Hot Cross Bunnies If children are familiar with singing the songs first, they will find it easier to learn them on the recorder later. 1. Easter Bunnies Optional activity suggestion: Children sit in a circle. One child plays the part of the bunny and hops around the outside of the circle. Whoever they stop behind at the end of the song becomes the new bunny. 2. Easter Eggs Optional activity suggestion: Pass the parcel (in the shape of an egg) around the circle in time with the music. Whoever has the parcel at the end of each song removes a layer. Reward at the very end - for example, could be that they choose the next activity for the class and/or become the new leader etc. (i.e. does not need to be confectionary – check your school policy). 3. Easter Cat Optional activity suggestion: A child sleeps like a cat curled up in the middle of the circle. At the end of the song, another child has been chosen to repeat the last line, Is it time to take a nap? Can the sleeping cat guess who it is? Right or wrong, the new child becomes the new Easter cat and so on. 4. Kangaroo Optional activity suggestion: Statues. At the end of the song, the teacher plays some jumping music, when the music stops, children freeze. Whoever moves is out and joins the teacher in making the jumping music (hand claps or percussive instrument). 5. Easter Song Optional activity suggestion: Dance with partners. Song first time: Link arms and skip around 4 bars. Change arms and skip the other way next 4 bars. Song second time: Sing 1st line only while facing partner, holding hands and swinging arms left and right. 6. Who’s that knocking on my door? Optional activity suggestion: Partner clapping game. Face partner. 1 – knee slap 2 – hand clap 3 and – knee slap 4 - hand clap Who’s that – right hands clap knocking - left hand clap On my – right left clap Door – two hand clap. (same for verse 2). 7. Easter Lullaby Optional activity suggestion: Tuned percussion (hold for 4 beats): Bars one and two/ five and six = E and G together. Bar three and seven = B and D together. Bars four and eight = E and G together. 8. Easter Moon Optional activity suggestion: Untuned percussion = soft finger cymbal or triangle every 8 beats. Tuned percussion as above except Bars three and seven = B and A together. 9. Easter Surprise Optional activity suggestion: Hands O-pen on each side of the eyes, Shut them hands close over eyes. Clap hands on Happy Easter prize. (add hurray arms stretched up - on the very last time). 10. Hot Cross Bunnies Optional activity suggestion: Dance. All hold hands in a big circle. 2 bars walk to the left, 2 bars walk to the right, 2 bars let go of hands and hop to the centre right foot and then left foot, last two bars hold hands and walk back out to the circle ready to start again. Prior to lecturing, he has had an extensive and successful teaching career both as a primary school generalist and as a music specialist in Western Australian Schools. He has taught music to students across a wide range of ages, ranging from 4-year-olds to 84-year-olds. He currently works as a volunteer at Nedlands Community Care’s Affinity Singing Group in collaboration with Ilsa Smith (group leader).
