National Electrical Manufacturers Association 1300 North 17th Street, Suite 1847 Rosslyn, Virginia 22209 (703) 841-3200 www.nema.org USER GUIDE TO PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS FOR METAL ELECTRICAL CONDUIT AND TUBING This guide is published by the Steel Rigid Conduit and Electrical Metallic Tubing Section of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association in the interest of more widely disseminating information on the proper identification of U.S. standards applicable to metal electrical conduit and tubing. The applicable standards for electrical metal conduit and tubing covered by Articles 342, 344, and 358 of the National Electrical Code* are: ELECTRICAL RIGID METAL CONDUIT - STEEL (AND COUPLINGS) Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., Standard UL-6 American National Standards Institute, Inc., ANSI C80.1 NEC Article 344 ELECTRICAL RIGID METAL CONDUIT - ALUMINUM, BRONZE, AND STAINLESS STEEL (AND COUPLINGS) Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., Standard UL-6A American National Standards Institute, Inc., ANSI C80.5 (Aluminum only) NEC Article 344 ELECTRICAL STEEL INTERMEDIATE METAL CONDUIT (AND COUPLINGS) Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., Standard UL-1242 American National Standards Institute, Inc., ANSI C80.6 NEC Article 342 ELECTRICAL METALLIC TUBING - STEEL Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., Standard UL-797 American National Standards Institute, Inc., ANSI C80.3 NEC Article 358 ELECTRICAL METALLIC TUBING - ALUMINUM Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., Standard UL-797A NEC Article 358 FITTINGS FOR CABLE AND CONDUIT Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., Standard UL-514B NEMA FB 1 Footnotes: 1) The Department of Defense (DOD) has adopted the above listed Underwriters Laboratories standards as Federal specifications. This is in keeping with current governmental policy of adopting industry standards when possible. 2) The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) does not publish a standard whose scope specifically covers electrical conduit and couplings. Therefore ASTM specifications do not apply to metal conduit for use as a metal raceway for the installation of wires and cables in accordance with the National Electrical Code. 3) Additional guidance may be found in Underwriters Laboratories Electrical Construction and Materials Directory (Green Book) under the above product descriptions. *Raceway articles were renumbered in the 2002 NEC. The former article numbers were 345 (IMC), 346 (RIGID) and 348 (EMT) respectively. BULLETIN 5RN 2189 Revised 1-03
