Machine Automation System LADAR
Laser Detection and Ranging
(LADAR)
• Provides 2- dimensional digital profile
of the drive walls by scanning
hundreds of linear distance readings
per second.
• LADAR information combined with
other sensor data is transmitted from
the engine to the control module via
the Local Area Network (LARN) to the
operator station so the operator can
see the machine.

BENEFITS
Safety
Safety is a top priority.
Automation improves safety
in a number of ways:
• Machine operated from a
secure location
• Drive wall impacts virtually
eliminated
• Pre-programmed zones for
machine speed regulation and
“no-travel” areas
• Prevents personnel from
entering and machines leaving
the operations area while the
system is in operation
14
// Underground Mining // Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN
Productivity is significantly
improved through:
• Increased machine utilization
• Reduced machine and drive
damage
• Productivity through utilization of a
larger machine in existing drive
• Higher machine availability
• Reduced operator fatigue
• Shift change efficiency

HEALTH
• MineStar Health is a scalable solution enabling a site(s) to more effectively monitor the
condition of their fleet
• It can broadly be split up into two capability sub sets:
§ Real time data: Events, Payload, Event Plotting, Channel Polling
§ Historical Custom Reporting & Dashboards: VIMS Trends, Snapshots, Event trending etc

PROXIMITY
AWARENESS
Value Impact: Not only is personnel safety considerably improved through real time tracking and visualization, traffic management is also enabled
through position awareness. Traffic priority can be managed visually around blind corners or long declines through visual on board
representations of oncoming traffic.

•
Real time data streaming (physicals) to fleet and task
management
Remote condition monitoring
•
Historical trend analysis
•
3rd party machine Health monitoring
•
Move from scheduled to predicative maintenance
Reporting
Value Impact: Providing the right data at the right time to the
right personnel allows for real time responses to daily variability
resulting in a better managed mine delivering expected results.

•
Activity monitoring/management
•

Manage face utilization
•
In cab display presents relevant activities to
operators to ensure conformance to plan
•
Drill, blast, load, haul, clean up, bolt
Reporting
Value Impact: Active management of activities critical to
advancing mine production reduces variation and/or
allows for real time intervention for end of shift results.
Capturing this data supports understanding of the time
usage model and better refinement of daily activities.

WORK MANAGEMENT
Closely tied to Short Term Interval Control (STIC), Work
Management is the “Plan the Work” cycle of mine
management. Where STIC is the “Work the Plan” the ability
to plan, schedule and resource activities prior to execution is
key to managing overall operational costs and avoiding over
capitalization
Value Impact: Monthly planning tool allows for effective
management of the ore mass cave ultimately reducing
dilution for better ore management.
Activity management coupled with Command for Underground
ensures activity compliance for remote machines while maximizing
machine usage through blast windows, shift change, seismic
events, etc.

MXY COMPONETS
§
LARN: Local Area Radio Network: Industry standard internet cables, power cabling 48V, LARN radios
and antennas and ethernet switches.
§
AIS: Area Isolation System: It is a configuration card- contain firmware to configurated the AIS module,
different cards are use ti configurate the AIS, area entries (BCP ) and AOS shutdown
§
PLC: Programmable logic control :The AIS programmabel logic controller, controls the operation of the
AIS
§
AOS: Automation Operation Station: Using the AOS shutdown switch the operator can inmediatly
shutdown the machines by disarming the area of isolation
§
BCP: Barrier control panel: BCP is connecting the LARN, one per each entrance to the operation area
§
MSM: Machine Shotown Sytem: Enables operation of the machine when operation areas have been
properly armed
§
AIS: Warning lights: Each BCP has an AIS warning light. Real light indicate to personal the operation area
is armed
§
LADAR: Laser detection and Ranging: Laser sensor use as the personnel barrier input to the barrier
control system. Monitors a virtual field across the entry to the operations areas and can be used in place of
a physical gate
