Películas como 1,2,3… Splash o La Sirenita fueron su fuente de inspiración. De pequeño,
Tikva Briggs ya soñaba con ponerse una cola de sirena. Pero no fue hasta enero
de 2014 cuando este peluquero hizo realidad su fantasía y se convirtió en Maksim
(encantador, en hebreo), la Bruja del Mar de cola amarilla. "Me siento un poco como
Peter Pan, no quiero dejar morir al niño que llevo dentro". No le importa lo que opine la
gente. "Mis amigos y mi familia están muy contentos con todo esto y me dicen que soy
un sireno muy guapo", confiesa. "Mi cola no es un disfraz ni un alter ego. Forma parte
de mi personalidad. Con ella me siento fuerte, espléndido, agraciado y listo para
afrontar todos mis miedos". Si ha tenido un mal día, nadar con ella le relaja. Le gusta
sobre todo por su color amarillo y porque le recuerda a su animal marino favorito: el
pulpo de anillos azules. En esta foto, tomada durante el festival para sirenas y sirenos
Merfest que se celebra en Cary (Carolina del Norte), Maksim estaba feliz porque
acababa de nadar con su cola por primera vez. Normalmente va dos o tres veces por
semana a una piscina cubierta, pero en el Merfest pudo interactuar con otras criaturas marinas como él. "Me encantó, fue una experiencia increíble. Me enseñaron trucos para
aguantar la respiración bajo el agua y me hicieron una sesión de fotos subacuática.
La gente era superamable. Fue sin duda el mejor fin de semana en mucho tiempo".
Movies like Splash and The Little Mermaid were his inspiration. As a child, Tikva Briggs always
dreamed about having a mermaid's tail. However, it wasn't until January 2014 that this
hairdresser made his fantasy come true by becoming Maksim (enchanting in Hebrew),
the Yellow-Tailed Sea Witch. "I feel a bit like Peter Pan. I won't let my inner child die." He
doesn't care what people think of him. "My friends and family are very happy with my
merman journey and tell me I'm a handsome merman," he reveals. "My tail is neither disguise
nor alter ego but is very much a part of my personality. With it, I feel strong, charming, graceful,
and ready to face everything that frightens me." Whenever he has a bad day, swimming with
his tail relaxes him. He loves it because of its yellow colour and because it reminds him of his
favourite marine animal; the blue-ringed octopus. In this photo, taken during Merfest, a festival
for merfolk in Cary, North Carolina, Maksim was happy because he had just swam with his
tail for the very first time. Although, he swims twice or three times a week in an indoor pool,
the Merfest allowed him to interact with other underwater creatures like himself. "I absolutely
loved it. It was an amazing experience. They taught us tricks to help us hold our breath
underwater longer, and I had an underwater photoshoot. Everybody was so welcoming.
It was the best weekend ever."
