Uses of the Subjunctive for IGCSE Spanish
Although you are not formally required to know forms of the subjunctive in any detail at
IGCSE level, certain 'set phrases' can be learnt and used appropriately to enhance the
quality of your work.
Look at the following examples and decide how you might adapt them for your own
use, paying attention to the forms of the subjunctive underlined:
Si lo hubiera sabido, lo hubiera hecho
If I had known (it), I would have done it
Si me lo hubieras mandado, lo hubiera recibido
If you had sent it to me, I would have received it
Espero que todo os vaya bien
I hope everything is going well for you all
Si fuera tú
If I were you
Si pudiéramos ayudarte, lo haríamos
If we could help you, we would do so
Si hubiéramos podido ayudarte, lo hubiéramos hecho
If we had been able to help you, we would have done so
Como si fuera la primera / la última vez
As if it were the first / last time
No creo que sea el caso
I don't think that’s the case
No creía que fuera el caso
I didn't think that was the case
Para que lo sepas / supieras
So that you know / knew
Quiero que sepas que…
I want you to know that…
Te lo dije para que lo entendieras / supieras
I told you (it) so that you would understand / know (it)

Mi padre insistió en que visitáramos el museo / a mi abuela
My father made us visit the museum / my grandmother
Puede ser que a él le interesara pero a mí no
Maybe he found it interesting, but I didn't
Por mucho que quisiéramos hacerlo, no pudimos...
As much as we wanted to do it, we couldn't...
Ojalá fuera así
I wish it were so
Es posible que se haya equivocado
He may have made a mistake
Es increíble que estuviéramos tanto tiempo
It's incredible that we spent so much time
Qué lástima que no pudiéramos...
What a pity we couldn't...
Cuando tenga dinero, lo haré
When I have some money, I'll do it
Si tuviera dinero / tiempo, lo haría / iría a...
If I had time / money, I'd do it / I'd go to...
En cuanto termine mis exámenes...
As soon as I finish my exams
Con tal de que tenga tiempo / dinero suficiente para hacerlo
