We cannot avoid a tsunami, but we can prevent a disaster. To be Tsunami Ready Review the inundation or evacuation tsunami maps for your municipality; know your evacuation routes and assembly areas. Make sure you have a way to receive emergency notification 24 hours a day. Have an emergency plan for your home, community and workplace. Have a safety backpack with emergency supplies. After a very strong earthquake or if a tsunami warning is issued, get out of low-lying coastal areas immediately, preferably on foot as there may be traffic and blocked roads. Once an area is evacuated, do not enter until an official notice has been issued that it is safe to return. The tsunami may arrive in a few minutes, but its waves may continue to affect the coast for many hours.
